The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) has announced its latest round of official certifications, and NewJeans leads the pack with an impressive double platinum certification for their hit single “OMG”!
NewJeans’ ‘OMG’ Earns Double Platinum Certification for Streaming in Japan
In 2020, the RIAJ introduced a certification system specifically for online streaming, adding to its existing systems for physical album shipments and digital download sales. Under this system, songs are certified silver at 30 million streams, gold at 50 million streams, platinum at 100 million streams, and double platinum at 200 million streams.
NewJeans achieved two major milestones in this latest batch of certifications. Their 2023 hit single “OMG” was awarded double platinum status after surpassing 200 million streams in Japan. In addition, their debut track “Attention” was certified platinum for reaching 100 million streams. This marks another significant achievement for the rising girl group, solidifying their popularity in Japan.
These certifications come just a few months after NewJeans earned platinum status for two other singles: their pre-release track “Super Shy” and the title track “ETA” from their 2023 mini album ‘Get Up’. Both tracks surpassed 100 million streams, proving the group’s strong presence in the global K-pop scene.
In addition to NewJeans, BTS’s Jungkook also achieved a platinum certification for his solo debut track “Seven” (featuring Latto), which hit 100 million streams in Japan. BTS themselves secured gold certifications for two of their B-sides, “Dimple” and “Dionysus,” both of which surpassed 50 million streams.
Additional songs that received gold certification this month include aespa’s “Girls,” the Japanese version of BIGBANG’s G-Dragon’s solo hit “Crooked,” and LE SSERAFIM’s “EASY.” Needless to say, it’s a great time for K-pop acts as Japanese fans continue to stream their tracks.
The ongoing success of NewJeans and BTS in Japan highlights their powerful fanbases and the continued global influence of K-pop. Congratulations to all the artists who received certifications this month!
