In a recent interview with Weverse Magazine, Shinyu, the leader of TWS, opened up about his musical roots, leadership philosophy, and the dreams that drive him. His candid reflections offer a deeper understanding of his artistic identity and vision for the group.

“I got into rap in middle school. I’d always look up songs and listen to them, and I still listen to it a lot. As you mentioned, I like boom bap and I’m pretty comfortable with it from having practiced it so much,” Shinyu said when asked why he decided to become a rapper.

Discussing his approach to music and performance, Shinyu said, “I pay special attention to the lyrics. I quickly find a personality for each song in my head and rapidly switch between them like changing films for a camera. So, in ‘BFF,’ I become this funky rapping character, then in ‘first hooky,’ I’m a tough rapper. It gives each song its own distinct personality.”

He didn’t get into K-pop to pursue fame and fortune. “I first dreamed of becoming a model, but the whole idea that K-pop groups stick together for a long time and basically become families struck a deep chord with me,” he admitted. “More than anything else, I wanted to look cool and be a good influence to lots of people. My two nunims always told me, ‘You’d make a great K-pop artist,’ and over time those kind words made my aspirations balloon up. I was just drawn to it.”

His trainee journey began when he took a trip to Seoul with one of his sisters. “I was actually against it—I like just staying home,” he laughed. “But she insisted, so we went, and that’s when I was scouted for the first time, which is what started me down the path of life as a trainee. Sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened if I hadn’t gone up with her that day. Maybe this current version of me wouldn’t even exist.”

As the leader of TWS, he navigates his role with a blend of observation, flexibility, and careful consideration. He strives to make decisions that benefit the group while fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. “I became the permanent leader after we all took turns being leader for the day. I believe leadership is about sticking to your duties and adopting a responsible attitude, and I figure that’s what made them trust me. Still, this is my first time being a leader, and I’m not that good yet, so I’m learning as I go.”

Shinyu dreams of winning Best New Artist. His bucket list also includes doing concerts and fan sign events. “If you’re going to dream, dream big, right?” he remarked.

Since their official debut on January 22, 2024, with the EP Sparkling Blue, preceded by the pre-debut single “Oh Mymy : 7s,” TWS has been making waves in K-pop. Their fresh, youthful image caught the attention of fans worldwide. The group’s leader Shinyu quickly became a fan favorite. In fact, many now refer to him as a “stan attractor” because his visuals continue to draw new fans to the group.

Shinyu’s popularity soared after a fancam of him performing “plot twist” showcased his striking features and towering height. Standing tall at 182 cm, his lean physique, long legs, and proportionately small head lend him the appearance of a character straight out of a manhwa. Korean netizens have been raving about the rookie idol, dubbing him “the total package.” Comments have ranged from astonishment at his long, swan-like neck to praise for his overall appeal.

One might expect someone as handsome as him to be oozing with confidence, but he admitted to being “a bit shy” in an interview shortly after he debuted. However, he promised to work hard at overcoming his shyness in order to get closer to the group’s fans.

All eyes on Shinyu

Shinyu, whose birth name is Shin Junghwan, was born on November 7th, 2003, making him a Scorpio under the Western Zodiac and a Sheep under the Chinese Zodiac. He is of Korean nationality and identifies with both INFP and ISTP MBTI types. Shinyu was born in Yesan, Chungcheongnam, South Korea, into a family that includes his parents and two older sisters, born in 1997 and 2002. His educational journey took him through Yesan Primary and Secondary School and the Video and Music Content Department of Lira Art High School, as reported by fans on X (formerly Twitter).

Shinyu says the animal that resembles him is a sloth and brown is the color that best represents him. Winter is his favorite season, hamburgers are his favorite food, and he says his smile is his charm point. His favorite number is 1, so he must’ve been doubly thrilled when Sparkling Blue hit the top spot on the Hanteo Chart upon release. When he’s not dancing or singing, he draws, exercises, and goes bowling for fun. Finally, Shinyu has a fondness for baby giraffes, probably because they tower over everyone else like he does!
