Hueningkai, Soobin, and Taehyun Talk About Their Trainee Days

People often see the world of K-pop as glamorous, but the road to stardom isn’t easy. Recently, the members of TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) shed light on their pre-debut days, revealing some shocking stories from their time as BigHit Music trainees.

On September 21, during a live broadcast, Hueningkai, Soobin, and Taehyun talked about their past. They shared some pre-debut tales, one of which stunned their fans. Recounting an incident from their old dormitory days, Taehyun spoke about a near-death experience caused by a broken extension cord. The cord almost electrocuted him when he touched it.

“I’m telling you, I’m still too scared to even touch here just in case something happens again,” he confessed. The gravity of the situation became evident when Taehyun mentioned that if it weren’t for an older trainee and Younite‘s Eunho, he would’ve died. “Both of them really helped me,” he emphasized.

They also touched upon the strict hierarchy. Taehyun shared another memory, saying, “The other memory was when Kai was messing around, and the ‘Hey, you, come outside’ moment.” Hueningkai elaborated on an incident where he innocently mimicked a dance move he saw senior trainees practicing. They misinterpreted this act, which led to a confrontation. Soobin recounted the stern words they heard. “They were like, ‘Is this funny to you?’ and ‘The hyungs are filming a video, and you’re at the back doing this.”

The incident didn’t end there. Hueningkai, unaware that the seniors were filming, was taken aback by their reaction. Soobin provided more details, explaining that Hueningkai‘s playfulness, witnessed by five younger trainees, was misconstrued. The atmosphere turned tense, and the older trainees’ response was to make them all do a plank as punishment.

These revelations from the TXT members provide a glimpse into the rigorous and sometimes harsh world of K-pop training. It’s a reminder that behind the glitz and glamour, there are real stories of challenges, perseverance, and resilience. – K-Pop News Writer

Sandara Park Reflects on Iconic 2NE1 Hairstyle

People know and love Sandara Park for her unique and bold fashion sense that extends to her hair. After all, Dara made a mark as a member of 2NE1 because of the way she did her hair. Not surprisingly, it’s something that the idol is truly proud of. Park has opened up about her past and reflected on her iconic 2NE1 hairstyle.

Dara Discusses Her Iconic 2NE1 Hairstyle

When Dara came into the K-pop scene, people immediately took notice of her high ponytail. And we’re not talking about a hairdo similar to Ariana Grande. Sandara Park wore her hair to it stuck straight up like a palm tree. Since then, Park would go on to sport interesting ‘dos like the time she shaved the side of her head. However, the palm tree ponytail is still seen as her iconic 2NE1 hairstyle that started it all.

But why did she wear her hair like that from the start? Sandara Park was recently a guest on “Amazing Saturday” where she was asked about her image as a 2NE1 member. When Shin Dong Yup asked if she tried to play a character with a strong image, Dara explained that was the reason for her iconic 2NE1 hairstyle.

“That’s why I put my hair up like that. I didn’t want to be discouraged,” she said. “I was able to have fun on stage because I had something like that.”

It’s clear that Dara truly enjoyed experimenting with her hair when she was promoting with the rest of 2NE1. Needless to say, fans continue to expect the beloved idol to keep pushing the boundaries of fashion in the future. Hopefully, this will happen again on her next comeback.

Sandara Park recently released her second EP ‘Sandara Park’ which featured the title track “Festival”. The mini album was released on July 12, 2023.

SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi Is the New Face of Jongga Kimchi

Jongga Kimchi, a household name in fermented delights, unveiled SEVENTEEN‘s Hoshi as their latest brand ambassador. This renowned brand, known for its diverse range of products, celebrated the news with a photoshoot in Vogue Korea. Netizens found the news amusing and endearing. They congratulated Hoshi on becoming a successful fan of kimchi.

Vogue Korea

Soul food

The global acclaim that kimchi relishes today can be attributed significantly to Jongga. They made packaged kimchi in response to the Korean government’s initiative to commercialize the iconic dish before the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1987, experts crafted a standard recipe, ensuring consistent taste regardless of when and where it’s consumed. The brand name “Jongga” has to do with the Korean tradition of passing down recipes through generations, symbolizing a rich heritage and the joy of Korean cuisine.

Hoshi‘s association with Jongga Kimchi seems almost serendipitous. Known for his profound love for kimchi, he never misses an opportunity to have it as a side dish. In a conversation with Vogue Korea, he said, “Kimchi is my soul food. There are so many people around me who cook better than I do, so I haven’t felt the need to cook seriously yet. But I plan to challenge myself in the future. I want to ‘master’ kimchi stew first, which can be useful anytime, anywhere.”

The Vogue photoshoot creatively incorporated elements of kimchi. Hoshi was surrounded by a mist of powder reminiscent of the pepper flakes used in kimchi seasoning. He also wore red leather gloves, a nod to the traditional rubber gloves used in kimchi preparation. When asked about the shoot, Hoshi said, “I loved all the outfits with a red point. Especially the tight red top caught my eye. It looked good even with sunglasses. Throughout the summer, I enjoyed wearing thin shirts or long-sleeved t-shirts with shorts that came just below the knee. It made me feel the new season.”

Vogue Korea

Why Hoshi is perfect for the role

Jongga Kimchi’s influence is spreading. In 2021, over 40 countries, including the Americas, China, Japan, Europe, Oceania, and Singapore, imported 67 million USD worth of Jongga Kimchi. This marked a 131% increase from 29 million USD in 2016. Moreover, the first quarter of 2022 saw a dramatic 50% sales surge in Hong Kong, likely driven by the demand for anti-viral foods amidst the COVID-19 fifth wave.

The brand’s growth in Asia and North America is noteworthy. In the U.S., major distributors like Costco and Walmart have seen a significant uptick in sales. Interestingly, just five to six years ago, over 90% of kimchi buyers in the U.S. were local Koreans. But with the rising influence of Korean culture, more locals, including other Asians, are buying kimchi. Daesang recently inaugurated a large-scale factory in Los Angeles to cater to the growing demand, marking its 10th international production base and first outside Asia.

Given all these factors, Hoshi emerges as the ideal ambassador for Jongga Kimchi. His global fame and love for kimchi make him the perfect fit for the role. – K-Pop News Writer

MOAs Tell TXT’s Soobin to ‘Stay Strong’ Despite ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ Spoilers

Soobin of TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) recently found himself at the center of a Twitter storm, but not for reasons one might expect. His fans, MOAs (Moments of Alwaysness), trended the hashtag “#staystrongsoobin,” sending their “prayers” for his wellbeing. However, the reason behind this outpouring of support was more light-hearted than it seemed.

Soobin is a well-known admirer of Jujutsu Kaisen. His favorite character is Gojo Satoru. For the uninitiated, Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime and manga about sorcerers battling physical manifestations of curses to protect humans. Soobin‘s affection for Gojo is evident. Whether he’s imitating Gojo‘s moves, snapping photos with Gojo posters, or sharing his fandom with MOAs, Soobin‘s love for the character is undeniable.

However, the fandom was thrown into a frenzy when a leaked manga preview hinted at Gojo’s possible death. This revelation led to Gojo‘s name trending on Twitter worldwide. Given Soobin‘s admiration for Gojo, MOAs humorously initiated the hashtag, hoping the potential spoiler wouldn’t make him too sad.

A visibly upset Soobin

Their concerns weren’t unfounded. On September 21, Soobin, alongside Hueningkai and Taehyun, went live on Weverse. They engaged with fans on various topics, including the latest developments in Jujutsu Kaisen. Eager fans flooded the livestream with comments about the spoiler, to which a visibly upset Soobin responded, asking for no more spoilers despite being aware of the manga’s events. Hueningkai added that he had to exit the Weverse app immediately upon seeing the spoiler, even though he expected the update. Soobin, in his typical fanboy fashion, asked fans to refrain from discussing Jujutsu Kaisen further.

While MOAs who follow the manga found Soobin‘s reaction relatable, others had mixed feelings. Some appreciated his investment in the character, while others questioned why fans would spoil the update for TXT’s leader.

We don’t have the answer for that, but we do know it’s heartwarming to see fans support their idols, even if it’s over an anime spoiler. As the story unfolds, one thing is certain: MOAs always have Soobin‘s back, no matter what. – K-Pop News Writer

Meet Shunsuke Michieda: The Japanese Teen Who Went Viral in Korea

Some years back, Japanese teen Michieda Shunsuke—also known as “Micchi”—went viral in South Korea because of his ethereal visuals. Today, this talented young man has matured, and his refined good looks continue to mesmerize fans.

Meet Micchi

Micchi‘s journey began under the renowned talent agency Johnny & Associates. Even as a rookie, he garnered significant attention, especially from Korean netizens. They lauded him as a “triple threat” for his voice, moves, looks, and charismatic personality. Born in Osaka, Japan, Micchi’s passion for music was evident from a young age. Influenced by his mother’s love for SMAP, he grew up listening to iconic groups like Hey! Say! JUMP. His family’s support led him to join Johnny & Associates in 2014, marking the start of his illustrious career.

His rise to fame was meteoric. At just 13 years old, Micchi became a backup dancer for senior groups at his agency. However, it was his inclusion in the Kansai Johny’s Jr. group Naniwa Danshi in 2018 that solidified his position in the entertainment industry. This group, consisting of seven boys, debuted with the single “Ubu Love” in 2021. But it was his star turn in the series My Son in 2017 that truly caught the attention of Korean netizens, many of whom had already become ardent fans.

Since then, he has done multiple dramas and films, with his role in Even if This Love Disappears From the World Tonight garnering significant attention. During the press conference for this film in Seoul, he thanked his Korean fans. Overwhelmed by the love, Micchi shared, “I was anxious, but I’m grateful knowing many people cheer for me. Thank you for welcoming me with warm support. I’m very impressed, and I think this is such a great city,” he said. Despite the language barrier, he endeared himself to them with charm and humility.

The ‘one-in-a-million male idol’

In Korea, Micchi is fondly nicknamed the “one-in-a-million male idol.” When asked about this title, he responded with genuine humility, attributing the success of his films to the collective efforts of the cast and crew. At just 21, his future in the entertainment industry looks incredibly promising.

His fans have more to look forward to, as Eye-Ai, an English magazine on Japanese culture and entertainment, put Micchi on the cover of its November issue. In recent news, Naniwa Danshi‘s new single, “Make Up Day/Missing,” secured the No.1 spot on the Oricon weekly combined singles ranking.

Michieda Shunsuke‘s journey from a young boy in Osaka to an international sensation is a testament to his hard work, talent, and the unwavering support of his fans. JYP’s New Girl Group, VCHA, Sits Down With Teen Vogue

The K-pop survival show A2K (America2Korea) has ended, revealing its six finalists: Camila, Kaylee, KG, Kendall, Lexi, and Savanna. This venture saw teenage girls from North America auditioning for a chance to train in Seoul and debut in a global girl group called VCHA. A collaboration between JYP Entertainment and Republic Records, it marks the first American group trained under the rigorous K-pop system.

VCHA: What’s in a name?

The excitement was palpable during their first official group interview with Teen Vogue. Savanna expressed her eagerness to connect with fans, while Camila reflected on their incredible journey over the past year. Lexi said she can’t wait for people to listen to the music they’ve been working on. To mark their formation, VCHA announced the release of a pre-debut single, “SeVit (NEW LIGHT),” featuring the title track “Y.O.Universe” and other songs from the show.

After the show, the six finalists underwent intensive training at JYP Entertainment’s headquarters in Seoul. Eventually, their group received the name VCHA (pronounced vit-chaa). When asked about their reactions to the name, leader Lexi said, “We were really shocked at first. It was unexpected because we were so used to A2K that it just wasn’t something that we thought was going to be our name. But it’s really cool, and the meaning matches us really well.”

Kaylee elaborated on the name’s significance, saying, “VCHA comes from the Korean word ‘비춰’ or ‘bichwo,’ which means ‘to shine the light.’ And the textbook meaning is basically that we’re supposed to inspire. We all have role models or people we want to be like, so we want to inspire and lead the way for people who also see us as role models.”

When asked what they did after the finale, Savanna revealed, “Honestly, we didn’t have that much time [to celebrate] after the members were announced. We went straight into training. But we have been spending a lot of time together, and we’re also next-door neighbors at the hotel. We’ve been bonding. We eat meals together and go on walks.”

Their ‘A2K’ journey

KG’s love affair with K-pop began after she went to KCON LA, where watching ITZY live inspired her. Meanwhile, Kendall and Lexi got into K-pop because of its distinctiveness. They emphasized its choreography, fan interactions, fashion, and rich culture. “I feel like one of the biggest things in K-pop is the interaction with fans is so much different than in Western music. I feel like in K-pop, there are more personal interactions and more content put out there for fans,” Kendall said.

Reflecting on their A2K journey, Camila said, “I think we can all agree that we learned how capable we are of overcoming hardships because the show was very challenging. There were a lot of intense moments, and at times, it got really hard, but it was really comforting to see that you can do it and that you have your members and your friends to help you throughout the whole process.”

The show emphasized the importance of teamwork. When asked about the challenges of singing and rapping in Korean, the girls revealed that one member was particularly helpful. KG said, “It was fun to be on a team with Kaylee, who is fluent in Korean. I had to try and sing in Korean. She definitely laughed at me sometimes for my pronunciation, but she taught us well.”

In conclusion, Savanna expressed her gratitude for the experience. “Five months ago, I could never have imagined this moment, us sitting down. I never thought I would get here with all of them. We learned so much, and we all just grew so much. I’m happy to say that after all this training and hard work, I guess we can be considered somewhat professional now. At the same time, it was a lot of fun. I would maybe do it again.” – K-Pop News Writer

FIFTY FIFTY Quietly Drops Compilation Album, ‘The Beginning’

Girl group FIFTY FIFTY, best known for their chart-topping track “Cupid,” dropped a compilation album targeting the U.S. market. This comes amidst the members’ ongoing dispute with their agency. However, Attrakt Entertainment remains optimistic that things will work out.

‘The Beginning’ is a U.S. exclusive

The Beginning arrived on streaming services last September 22. The album has five versions of “Cupid,” including a sped-up version, an English version, and a collaboration with American actress and singer Sabrina Carpenter. “Cupid,” which debuted last February, became the longest-charting song by a K-pop girl group on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. All in all, the compilation features 11 songs, including “Higher,” “Login,” “Lovin’ Me,” and “Tell Me” from their previous EP, THE FIFTY.

When asked about the The Beginning, Attrakt CEO Jun Hong Joon told StarNews, “There’s no new recording. We released it as a U.S. exclusive album. We only remixed and remastered it to resonate with the American style.”

The release of a new album amidst the dispute garnered immense attention from netizens. CEO Jun shared, “Before the dispute in May, I met with the CEO of Warner Records in the U.S. and verbally agreed. After returning to Korea in June, we believed the members would return soon and continued the project. We signed the contract in early July, and at the beginning of August, I shipped about 156,000 copies to the U.S. for distribution, and that’s the album that was unveiled on domestic streaming platforms today.”

What will happen to FIFTY FIFTY?

In August, FIFTY FIFTY sought to terminate their exclusive contract with Attrakt. Unfortunately, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of the agency. “It’s hard to say there was a breach in providing settlement data, and it’s challenging to see sufficient evidence of neglect. Ending the contract with The Givers is not a breach,” said the court. FIFTY FIFTY has since appealed that decision.

Attrakt previously accused FIFTY FIFTY of “tempering” (reaching out to other companies before their contract ends) and has blamed the third-party production company, The Givers. In retaliation, Attrakt filed a criminal complaint against The Givers’ CEO, Ahn Sung Il, and Director Baek Moon on charges of business obstruction and electronic record destruction.

CEO Jun thinks FIFTY FIFTY should return to Attrakt now that the case has been dismissed. “It’s heartbreaking that they are still being gaslighted by CEO Ahn,” he said. “Tempering needs to be eradicated. It shouldn’t set a bad precedent in the K-pop market. Laws should be revised to strengthen punishments in line with reality.” – K-Pop News Writer

Watch: Yim Siwan and aespa’s Winter Release ‘Win for You’

It’s a collaboration we didn’t see coming! Idol-actor Yim Siwan and Winter of K-pop girl group aespa have collaborated for the single “Win For You.”

What made the collaboration even more special is that it’s the official theme song of the 2024 ITFF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals.

It is meant to honor the athletes who are set to compete in the competition, as well as provide motivation for them.

First teased on September 19, the music video for the track was released on Thursday, September 21.

In the five-minute official music video for “Win For You,” scenes of the athletes training for the competition were featured.

Additionally, the vocals of both Siwan and Winter were given more depth through the help of an orchestra.

Can you hear my heart cry out to you now? This could be the moment we reach for the stars,” the two sang, with the song being a mixture of English and Korean lyrics.

Moreover, the “Win For You” collaboration is released under SM Classics. For those unfamiliar, SM Classics is the classical music label established by SM Entertainment in 2020. Given that the track featured an orchestra, it comes as no surprise.

Praises for ‘Win For You’

Since it was first teased, fans of both stars have expressed their anticipation for the track. Not only are they eager with how the two would sound like, but they’re also excited at the message of the song.

Following its release, many praised the combination of Siwan and Winter’s vocal tone. Some are even saying that despite it being an unexpected collaboration, they’re hoping that the two would work on more music.

Others also extended their support for the athletes and their upcoming competition.

But perhaps the majority of the comments were fans expressing their delight on finally hearing new music from Siwan again.

Although most are familiar with him as an actor, he was also the former vocalist of the K-pop boy group ZE:A. Since he hasn’t been active as an idol recently, fans were happy to hear him sing again.

Known for his roles in Summer Strike, Run On, and Unlocked, Siwan is taking part in Squid Game 2. Currently, he’s also starring in a travel show with fellow actorJung Hae In titled Actors in a Journey.

Kep1er’s Yeseo to Sit Out Activities Due to Health Issues

Yeseo of K-pop girl group Kep1er will temporarily not participate in upcoming scheduled activities due to health issues.

On Thursday, September 21, WAKEONE and SWING Entertainment released a statement about the idol’s current well-being.

According to the agency, Yeseo’s “health suddenly [took] a turn for the worse,” making her not able to attend some scheduled events.

One of the events she’ll be missing is the 2023 KPOP NATION X KOREA Music Festival in Poland set for September 23. Only eight members will proceed with the show.

Currently, Yeseo is resting and focusing on getting better, according to the agency.

Moreover, WAKEONE and SWING Entertainment also assured fans that they will “take all measures necessary” to help Yeseo with her recovery.

On social media, fans quickly sent their well-wishes for Yeseo. Meanwhile, others are also worried as to whether the idol will be participating in the group’s comeback activities as they’d rather have her focus on her recovery first.

As of writing, WAKEONE and SWING Entertainment have yet to address Yeseo’s participation in the group’s upcoming comeback.

More about Kep1er

Formed through Girls Planet 999 in January 2022, Kep1er debuted with nine members. Its members include Kim Chae-hyun, Huening Bahiyyih, Choi Yu-jin, Kim Da-yeon, Seo Young-eun, Kang Ye-seo, Hikaru Ezaki, Mashiro Sakamoto, and Shen Xiaoting.

Currently, Kep1er is preparing for their fifth EP Magic Hour which will be released on September 25. It will serve as the group’s return in five months following the release of their fourth EP Lovestruck! in April.

Given that they’re a project girl group, they’re only planned to have activities for two and a half years. Which means that Kep1er is expected to conclude their contracts in July 2024.

However, WAKEONE Entertainment has revealed that they’re discussing extending each idol’s promotional contract. Although no decision has been finalized yet, the agency said that they’ve already sent proposals to all partnered companies.
