HYBE Stock Prices Plummet After New CEO Announcement

HYBE’s financial troubles seem unrelenting this year, with the company’s stock prices plunging to unprecedented lows following the new CEO announcement.

Did The New CEO Announcement Cause HYBE Stock Prices to Plummet?

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Lee Jae Sang, the current Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), will replace Park Ji Won as HYBE’s CEO. This decision was met with disapproval from fan communities, as Lee’s past controversies resurfaced almost immediately after the news broke. The stock market also reacted negatively to this sudden leadership change, with HYBE stock hitting its lowest price in 18 months on Thursday, July 25.

HYBE shares closed at ₩170,000 KRW (approximately $123 USD) on Thursday, marking the lowest point since January 2023. This decline occurred just a day after the announcement of Lee Jae Sang’s appointment as CEO. The stock had previously been recovering from a dip caused by BTS’s hiatus announcement.

Who is Lee Jae Sang?

HYBE has yet to hold its shareholder and board meetings where the final decision to appoint Lee Jae Sang as the new CEO will be made. Lee joined HYBE in 2018, back when it was still known as Big Hit Entertainment.

Following the disclosure of Lee’s appointment, numerous allegations against him began circulating on community sites. These allegations included accusations of “threatening” ADOR’s former vice president and coercing them into revealing private conversations with CEO Min Hee Jin. Additionally, Lee has faced criticism for his involvement in acquiring Ithaca Holdings while he was the CEO of HYBE America, as well as for co-establishing an NFT company aimed at creating NFTs using HYBE artists.

The acquisition of Ithaca Holdings in 2021 has been particularly contentious. HYBE America has reported significant net losses for two consecutive years following the purchase. The losses amounted to ₩70.1 billion KRW (approximately $50.8 million USD) in the first year and ₩142 billion KRW (approximately $103 million USD) in the second year. This acquisition has been viewed by many as a financial misstep, contributing to HYBE’s ongoing struggles.

HYBE America’s investment in the NFT company Levvels has also proved to be a financial burden. In 2023, the investment generated an operating loss of ₩18.0 billion KRW (approximately $13.0 million USD). The financial strain continued into the first quarter of 2024, with the company recording a loss of ₩3.50 billion KRW (approximately $2.53 million USD).

What Will Happen to HYBE?

The controversies and financial losses associated with Lee Jae Sang have understandably caused concern among investors and fans alike. His past decisions and the financial repercussions of those decisions are now being scrutinized more than ever as he steps into the role of CEO. The market’s reaction to his appointment reflects a broader uncertainty about the future direction of HYBE under his leadership.

As HYBE prepares for its upcoming shareholder and board meetings, the company faces the dual challenge of restoring investor confidence and addressing the internal and external criticisms leveled against its new CEO. The outcome of these meetings and the company’s subsequent actions will be crucial in determining whether HYBE can navigate through these turbulent times and regain its footing in the competitive entertainment industry.

Yoo Ah In is in 7th Trial for Drug Charges

Actor Yoo Ah In, whose real name is Uhm Hong Sik, faces his seventh trial on July 24 KST for charges related to habitual drug use. This trial was followed after the revelations about improper prescription practices involving his doctor. This trial is a significant moment in the ongoing legal proceedings against the 37-year-old actor.

Yoo Ah In faces his seventh court appearance for allegations of habitual drug use

The allegations surfaced when it was revealed that Yoo Ah In’s doctor had sent sleeping pill prescriptions via quick service under his family’s name without proper consultation. During the sixth trial, Dr. Hwang admitted to issuing prescriptions for Stilnox, a zolpidem-based sleep inducer. This was around August 2021, and the name was under the actor’s father.

Dr. Hwang defended his actions, explaining that quick service deliveries were temporarily allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he failed to verify if the actor’s father was genuinely ill, which raised concerns about the legitimacy of these prescriptions.

Despite Yoo Ah In and his father not being infected with COVID-19, the prescriptions were delivered at his request. When prosecutors questioned the necessity of quick service for non-life-threatening sleeping pill prescriptions, Dr. Hwang struggled to provide a satisfactory answer. Additionally, he explained the use of sleep anesthesia for the actor’s SGB (stellate ganglion block) procedure, citing the actor’s high sensitivity to pain and fear of neck injections.

Dr. Hwang acknowledged discussing Yoo Ah In’s habitual drug use with a colleague but denied illegally prescribing narcotics. The actor is accused of using medical narcotics 181 times between September 2020 and March 2022 under the pretext of cosmetic procedures. Significant amounts of propofol, midazolam, ketamine, and remimazolam were administered during this period. Additionally, he allegedly received illegal prescriptions for over 1,100 tablets of Stilnox and Xanax under another person’s name 44 times between May 2021 and August 2023. He is also accused, along with four accomplices, of smoking marijuana in the U.S. and encouraging others to do the same.

During the second trial, Yoo Ah In admitted to some charges of using marijuana and propofol but denied instructing others to smoke marijuana, destroying evidence, and other accusations.

Prosecutors to Seek Arrest Warrants for Gu Je Yeok and Jeon Guk Jin

Prosecutors are seeking arrest warrants for YouTubers Gu Je Yeok, legally named Lee Jun Hee, and Jeon Guk Jin on charges of extortion, blackmail, and coercion against fellow YouTuber Tzuyang. The Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office has requested these warrants from the Suwon District Court, aiming to hold both individuals accountable for their alleged roles in a scheme that has rocked the online community.

YouTubers Gu Je Yeok and Jeon Guk Jin face serious charges of extortion, blackmail, and coercion against fellow YouTuber Tzuyang

Gu Je Yeok and Jeon Guk Jin, often referred to as “cyber-wreckers” for their actions, allegedly profited by spreading damaging rumors and exploiting well-known figures online. In February 2023, Gu Je Yeok reportedly extorted 55 million KRW (approximately $39,765) from Tzuyang. In a video posted on July 15, Jeon Guk Jin admitted to receiving 3 million KRW ($2,174) from Gu Je Yeok earlier this year, further implicating himself in the extortion scheme.

The case gained public attention on July 10 when HoverLab Inc., another YouTube channel, released a recording of a phone call between the two cyber wreckers. In this recording, Gu Je Yeok mentioned signing a contract with Tzuyang, in which he agreed not to speak about her past in exchange for the money.

Following the release of this recording, Tzuyang took to a livestream to reveal the extent of the abuse she had suffered. She described how her former boyfriend physically assaulted and threatened her, using illegally filmed videos to blackmail her into compliance.

Prosecutors have moved quickly in this case, conducting search and seizure operations and questioning the suspects. The Suwon District Court will hold hearings for the YouTubers at 10:30 AM on Friday to determine whether to issue the arrest warrants.

As this case continues to unfold, Prosecutor General Lee One Seok has emphasized the importance of taking strong action against those who cause irreparable harm through false accusations, insults, and coercion in cyberspace. He urged prosecutors to proactively seek heavy sentences and ensure that victims like Tzuyang are protected from further harm.

YouTuber Tzuyang Reveals Shocking Suicide Notes of Ex-Boyfried

YouTuber Tzuyang recently revealed the shocking contents of her late ex-boyfriend’s suicide notes, shedding light on years of abuse, extortion, and the complex legal battles that ensued. The revelations have sparked widespread discussion and controversy, especially after portions of the notes were released by JTBC on July 24th.

The popular YouTuber Tzuyang opens up about her late ex-boyfriend’s abuse, extortion, and his final words

Tzuyang’s ex-boyfriend, referred to as “Mr. A,” allegedly subjected her to four years of physical assault, extortion, and threats before his death. In his suicide notes, Mr. A denied spreading rumors about Tzuyang’s past and expressed deep frustration over the accusations. He admitted to abusing Tzuyang and extorting her income, expressing remorse for his actions and a desire to avoid further conflict.

Despite their confidentiality agreement, Mr. A’s lawyer, known as Mr. B, reportedly leaked information about Tzuyang to the YouTuber cyber wrecker Gu Je Yeok. This led her to file another complaint, believing her ex-boyfriend had breached their agreement. Mr. B, who is also accused of extorting tens of millions of KRW from the YouTuber, defended his actions, claiming they were part of a legitimate contract, although he acknowledged acting out of “drunken frustration.”

Her live broadcast added more layers to the story, as she revealed how her ex-boyfriend and agency head had subjected her to years of torment, starting with revenge porn and escalating to threats and extortion by individuals like Gu Je Yeok and Jeon Guk Jin.

The Korean Bar Association is now investigating the allegations against Mr. B, which could lead to disciplinary action. Following these revelations, Mr. B has been fired from his position as a legal journalist at a media company.

As she continues to share her painful experiences, the public response has been one of shock and concern, highlighting the severe impact of such abuses and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
