‘Mickey 17’ Surpasses 3M Viewers at Korean Box Office

Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi film “Mickey 17” has officially become the first box office sensation of 2025 in South Korea!

‘Mickey 17’ Achieves Major Milestone in Korean Box Office

On April 7, the Korean Film Council reported that as of 5:28 p.m. KST, “Mickey 17” had surpassed a major milestone—3,000,006 moviegoers—making it the first film of 2025 to cross the 3 million admissions mark at the Korean box office. The achievement highlights the film’s strong word-of-mouth and continued popularity since its release.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, “Mickey 17” marks his return to the big screen following the global success of “Parasite”. Adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7”, the film blends science fiction, black comedy, and social commentary—a trademark of Bong’s unique storytelling.

The movie stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable,” or disposable human clone created to undertake high-risk missions in space. Every time he dies, a new body is regenerated with his memories. But the plot thickens when one of his regenerations—Mickey 17—is accidentally declared dead, even though he’s still alive, leading to a mind-bending confrontation with his own clone.

The cast also includes an impressive lineup of global stars such as Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, adding to the film’s worldwide appeal.

“Mickey 17” has also been praised for its visually striking cinematography, clever narrative, and thought-provoking questions about identity, mortality, and the ethics of cloning. It’s not just a blockbuster—it’s a conversation starter.

With strong momentum at the box office and international buzz, “Mickey 17” is also shaping up to be one of the defining films of the year, further solidifying Bong Joon Ho’s status as a master storyteller on the global stage.

Congratulations to the cast and crew on this major accomplishment!
