RED VELVET Wendy and Yeri Part Ways with SM Entertainment

After more than a decade under the same label, Red Velvet’s Wendy and Yeri have officially parted ways with SM Entertainment for their individual careers.

Wendy and Yeri of Red Velvet Leave SM Entertainment

On April 4, SM Entertainment confirmed that Wendy’s and Yeri’s exclusive contracts with the agency had come to an end. Both artists debuted with Red Velvet—Wendy in 2014 as part of the original lineup and Yeri in 2015 as the youngest member added to the group. Over the years, they’ve not only contributed to Red Velvet’s musical success but also pursued their own solo ventures in music, acting, variety, and more.

In their statement, SM Entertainment clarified that while Wendy and Yeri will no longer be managed by the agency for their solo careers, they will continue to participate in Red Velvet’s group activities under SM. This arrangement allows the two members to explore new opportunities and creative directions individually, while maintaining the group’s unity and future promotions.

“Additionally, as members of Red Velvet, Wendy and Yeri will be working with us for their group activities, and we ask that you look forward to Red Velvet’s shining journey that will continue to unfold,” the statement read.

We sincerely thank you for the unsparing love you have given Wendy and Yeri up until now, and we hope you will give your warm interest to the two members as they embark on new challenges in their respective paths,” it added.

This news follows a growing trend among second- and third-generation idols who continue group activities while branching out with different agencies for solo work. Fans are now eagerly looking forward to both Wendy’s and Yeri’s next steps—individually and with Red Velvet.

Yeri Rushed to Hospital After RED VELVET’s Latest ‘Inkigayo’ Performance

RED VELVET’s Yeri is set to undergo medical treatment for a slipped disc after completing promotions for the group’s latest track, “Chill Kill.” Despite severe back pain, Yeri continued to perform until the final stage on SBS’s “Inkigayo”, where she left the stage immediately. Fans later learned that she received injections for her back pain during the live segment, and Irene, the group’s leader, was also absent, likely accompanying Yeri to the hospital.

At a face-to-face fansign event, Yeri shared with fans that she suffered a slipped disc during the comeback preparations. She is currently undergoing injections for the back pain and plans to undergo full treatment once “Chill Kill” promotions conclude. Yeri expressed gratitude to fans for watching their last stage and apologized for not being able to greet them during the live show.

The incident brings attention to the physical toll the entertainment industry, particularly K-pop, places on artists due to rigorous routines and immense performance pressures. Yeri’s dedication to fulfilling her commitments despite experiencing pain underscores the challenges faced by idols in the industry. The situation highlights both the resilience of performers like Yeri and the need for greater awareness of the physical demands placed on individuals within the K-pop industry. As fans express support and understanding, Yeri’s openness about her health struggles also contributes to breaking stigmas surrounding such issues in the K-pop community.

In related news, RED VELVET leader Irene was allegedly injured during a chaotic airport mob incident instigated by fans and reporters. The idol group was en route to the Supersound Festival in Thailand following their performance at “Music Core” when they were met with an overwhelming crowd, leading to a situation that quickly spiralled out of control.

RED VELVET’s Yeri Opens Up About Her Mean Character in “BITCH X RICH”

Yeri is opening up about her most challenging acting project so far. The RED VELVET member spoke about playing a mean character in the new series BITCH X RICH. In addition to that, Kim Ye-rim discussed the differences between being an idol and an actress.

Yeri Reveals Why She Accepted The Role of A Mean Character in BITCH X RICH

Cosmopolitan Korea recently shared the stunning photos from Yeri’s photoshoot for the magazine’s July issue. In the accompanying interview, the RED VELVET maknae discussed her new show BITCH X RICH where she plays the cruel queen bee Baek Jenna.

When the interviewer commented on Yeri’s cruel acting in the murder mystery, the Dear Diary singer admitted that she wanted to take on a challenge.

“I tried this [drama] as I wanted to expand the spectrum of my acting,” Yeri said. “As it’s a character I haven’t done before, people were very surprised. I did my lines thinking most importantly about my tone, speed, and rhythm.”

“Rather than a kid who just plays around, I had to look like a princess,” she added with a laugh. “An authoritative character who speaks slowly and seeks power over people. Since she’s the complete opposite of me, I worried about how to portray that image.”

Yeri also discussed the differences between being onstage with RED VELVET and acting.

“As RED VELVET, I’ve promoted for a long time, have many hit songs, and am recognized wherever I go,” she said. “But with acting, I’m a complete rookie. But I really like that. Because I can learn a whole lot.”

“Also, since it’s a job where you work really closely with the director, assistant director, filming director, and lighting director, I like that you can work in a friendlier way,“ Yeri added.

“I really like working in that way. Even people I meet for the first time feel like family after filming and being together for two to three months,” she continued.

RED VELVET recently completed their R to V world tour and Yeri shared how she and the members felt about meeting REVELUVs from different countries.

“As this was our first world tour in awhile, it was a tour where you could feel everyone trying hard to enjoy themselves,” she said.

It was fun that the fans’ vibes were different in each city, but the one thing in common was that I could hear them singing along to Korean lyrics in every performance,” Yeri continued. “I got goosebumps. I felt really thankful and it was so meaningful.”

Yeri’s full interview will be featured in Cosmopolitan Korea’s July 2023 issue.
