Keyword Fun: BTS’ Jimin Answers Questions About ‘FACE’

BTSJimin recently filmed several videos for Weverse’s YouTube channel. One was an interview in which the “Like Crazy” singer was given certain keywords to use as talking points. “From FACE, the title of my first official solo album, with the keywords FACE, ARMY, CULTURE, and ENERGY, we’ll get to know a little more about me through Jimin’s Keyword Interview, starting now!”

[Jimin’s Production Diary] [FACE] keyword interview

The first keyword

The first keyword got Jimin talking about flying solo. He said he was nervous about promoting alone but did his best to push past his nerves. “Honestly, I had fun making it. But as I was about to start promotions, I suddenly got scared. Will I be able to do well without the members? I don’t think I was able to shake off those worries. As I continue taking on new challenges, I’m thinking I will shake them off on the way.”

The difference between group and solo activities was evident to Jimin. He confessed, “When with the members backstage, I depend on them a lot. They give me energy. My fears lessen. It was a bit burdensome to do all of that alone. When I greeted the fans, I thought maybe it felt a bit awkward because I was doing it alone.”

Speaking of the other members, he revealed that his recent conversation with RM left quite an impression on him. Jimin recalled, “After the album promotions ended, our leader called me, and I was overwhelmed with emotions. He said things like, ‘You worked hard, and I’m so proud of you as a member.’ That became an unforgettable memory for me.”

A big concern of Jimin’s

Jimin‘s bond with the fans is undeniable. He said, “I like it when they call me by my name. There weren’t as many opportunities to meet in the past three to four years. When the time spent apart grows longer, even if you’re thinking of each other, you’re not hearing much about them, so it makes you think, ‘You’re all still there, right?’ So it makes me really happy when they call me by my name.”

He says newcomers to the fandom need to take note of one thing: his slightly crooked front teeth. He shared, “My front teeth aren’t straight. So the fans saw one of my teeth sticking out and mentioned the chewing gum we advertised. They called me by that. I hope you can love that a bit.”

That said, Jimin has thought about getting his teeth fixed while he’s serving in the military. He pondered, “Should I straighten my teeth in the army? Or should I not? It’s a big concern of mine. It’s a long period of time, and I don’t want to waste it. But should I not for all of you? I’m thinking about it, so just keep that in mind.”

The future of BTS

Jimin also opened up about his songwriting process in the Keyword Interview, which served as a precursor to his upcoming solo documentary. He says writing in a diary helps him be more creative. When that doesn’t work, he writes letters. However, he didn’t say whether he sends them out or not. When asked what song on FACE was hardest to record, he pointed to the fourth track.

He explained, “It’s called ‘Alone.’ It’s a song that draws on the period when I thought very badly of myself. I couldn’t really remember the emotions that I felt then, so it was hard to record that song. After I released the album, I felt so much better. I think I’ll make refreshing songs in the future.”

Speaking of which, he also talked about the future of BTS and his own future as a soloist: “I’m preparing a ton of stuff now, but we have to get together and show everyone that we’re still good. And we have to hurry and meet to give you good music, performances, and concerts! Please wait for it! We’ll be back soon, everyone.” – K-Pop News Writer

HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk Talks to Bloomberg About the Company’s Future

Bang Si-hyuk, the chairman of HYBE, recently addressed various topics surrounding the company and its artists, particularly BTS. During his appearance at Bloomberg Screen Time in Hollywood, USA, he touched upon the significance of BTS‘ recent contract renewals. He responded to a question about the significance of BTS’ second re-signing by saying, “It is natural for BTS to be needed for the growth of the company called HYBE.”

HYBE had announced its second re-signing with BTS last month. Reflecting on this, Bang Si-hyuk emphasized the bond between the septet and the company, saying, “The relationship between BTS and HYBE is good, but there were difficulties during the negotiation process, and we became closer while resolving them. It was the greatest happiness in my life as a manager, which is filled with hardships.”

On the topic of BTS‘ milestones, he also mentioned a project commemorating the 10th anniversary of a specific BTS album. Bang Si-hyuk revealed, “We had discussed creating a commemorative album when the album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 released in 2015 reaches its 10th anniversary, and we were able to make it together in the end.”

HYBE’s Bang Si-Hyuk on Making Music for the Masses

Bang Si-hyuk is thinking globally

Bang Si-hyuk also revealed that he’s been thinking globally. “We needed to expand externally and internally to enhance the influence of K-pop in the global music market and secure many global fans. We will continue to pursue experimental attempts for the sustainable growth path of K-pop, regardless of success or failure,” he added.

In a separate report by Bloomberg, Bang Si-hyuk expressed his intention to form a new girl group that could follow in BTS’ footsteps. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding BTS‘ popularity after their military service and emphasized the goal of creating a new girl group with global appeal. This initiative is currently underway with a global audition titled The Debut: Dream Academy, in collaboration with Geffen Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. The audition has seen participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds across 12 countries.

Bang Si-hyuk highlighted that unlike previous groups formed by HYBE, this new girl group would specifically target the global market, with a focus on the United States. He emphasized the need to bridge the gap between Western and Korean markets and mentioned that the group would speak primarily in English to communicate.

The expansion strategy of K-pop

Furthermore, Bang Si-hyuk also shared insights on the expansion strategy of K-pop. He noted the declining K-pop indicators in Southeast Asia and the challenges faced in the Japanese music market. He emphasized the importance of local music in each country and stated that the only area where significant growth is possible currently is the United States. “When K-pop becomes the mainstream of pop music, it can maintain a certain level of competitiveness against local music in each country,” he concluded.

Lastly, on a personal note, Bang Si-hyuk expressed his desire to retire in the next decade, sharing, “Personally, I want to live a retired life in 10 years. I hope I don’t have to announce my retirement but if the company continues to run even without me as the key person, I might be able to step back for the sake of future generations.” – K-Pop News Writer

How BTS’ j-hope Became a Special Forces Soldier

On October 6, BTSj-hope made a significant announcement on Weverse about his promotion to the rank of Special Elite Class Warrior in the South Korean military. The dancer and rapper, whose real name is Jung Hoseok, posted a heartfelt letter on the platform, updating fans on his military journey and assuring them of his well-being.

Having enlisted in April, j-hope is an assistant instructor at the Baekho Recruit Training Center. His role involves guiding and instructing recruits. He wrote, “I adapted faster than I thought, and I’m working hard. It’s a big responsibility because I have to help and lead young people taking their first steps in the military. I’m still as proud of my military service as I am of my BTS activities.”

j-hope went on to mention his latest achievement, writing, “I became a special forces soldier. I did my best and got good results.” The title of Special Elite Class Warrior is a mark of distinction in the South Korean military, reserved for those who set exemplary standards for their peers.

How did j-hope do it?

Earning the title of Special Elite Class Warrior is no small feat. It demands exceptional shooting skills, requiring one to achieve 18 or more hits out of 20 shots. The military tests physical strength by requiring more than 72 push-ups, over 86 sit-ups within two minutes, and by making candidates complete a 3-kilometer run in just 12 minutes and 30 seconds. Candidates must also complete a 10-kilometer rapid march carrying 20 kg of full gear in 2 hours and 40 minutes, and a 5-kilometer run with 15kg of non-combat gear within 40 minutes.

Additionally, candidates must complete 20 leg tugs, an intense fitness routine in 2 minutes and 10 seconds, and a 240-meter sprint in 1 minute and 2 seconds. Their mental strength is also rigorously assessed, requiring a score of over 90 out of 100 points.

The demanding criteria for becoming a Special Elite Class Warrior highlight the combination of shooting skills, physical strength, combat readiness, speed, and mental fortitude required. j-hope‘s achievements in this regard showcase his dedication and discipline, not to mention his mental and physical prowess. It’s commendable for someone primarily known for their artistic talents in the music world, underscoring j-hope‘s determination and versatility.

The members’ exemplary performances

Interestingly, j-hope isn’t the first BTS member to earn such a prestigious military title. Kim Seokjin, popularly known as Jin, was the first to be honored with the Special Elite Class Warrior title. Jin‘s exemplary performance led to his promotion to Corporal two months ahead of schedule.

Similarly, j-hope‘s promotion was initially set for January 2024 but was granted early in November 2023 due to his outstanding service. This reminded fans of a playful interaction on Weverse, where Jin had urged j-hope to secure the promotion soon. The exact date of j-hope‘s promotion to Corporal in November 2023 remains undisclosed.

Fans worldwide are thrilled to see another BTS member achieve such a prestigious rank. Upon reading the letter, fans took to social media to shower j-hope with praise. He returned all that love to them by concluding his letter with a touching message. He wrote, “I’m doing very well and becoming more mature. Always stay healthy, don’t get sick, and be careful of catching a cold. Our ARMY!” – K-Pop News Writer

SEVENTEEN Breaks Personal Record for Pre-orders With ‘SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN’

SEVENTEEN has still a week before they officially release their upcoming 11th mini-album SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN but it’s already making new personal records for the K-pop boy group.

On Thursday, October 12, album distributor YG PLUS announced that SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN has already recorded a total of 4,673,069 stock pre-orders so far.

For those unfamiliar, stock pre-orders refer to the number of albums that were ordered by fans before its actual release. As a result, said album has set a new career high in SEVENTEEN’s discography. And what makes this achievement even more remarkable is it came just six months after their previous milestone.

Previously, the group’s 10th mini-album FML, which was released in May, recorded 4.64 million copies in pre-orders.

With this feat of SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, it now ranked second among the top 20 albums with the highest stock pre-orders in K-pop history. In the first place is Stray Kids’ 5-Star album with 5,130,000 pre-orders.

Since there’s still roughly 10 days before the official release of SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, fans of SEVENTEEN are hopeful that they’ll rank higher once the pre-order season ends.

Given the pre-order records from SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, charts are declaring that SEVENTEEN is about to surpass 30 million album sales on Circle Chart.

In fact, SEVENTEEN already surpasses 10 million album sales for 2023 even without the count from SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN. According to PLEDIS Entertainment, the “Super” hitmakers have already sold an unprecedented record of 11,043, 625 physical albums, from January to September of 2023 alone.

Impressive year for SEVENTEEN

2023 really appeared to be pivotal for SEVENTEEN.

In terms of group album releases, their two comebacks for 2023, FML and SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, were both setting records. Aside from group albums, the comeback of SEVENTEEN’s subunit BSS also topped local and international charts.

According to streaming platform, BSS and SEVENTEEN dominated the 2023 charts.

Apart from music, the group also proved their entertainment skills through a number of variety shows.

As of writing,  Jeonghan and Dino are part of the travel program Magic Lamp. Meanwhile,  Seungkwan participated in the Netflix survival show The Devil’s Plan and Joshua and Hoshi participated in Bro Marble.

Moreover, Jun also starred in the Chinese drama Exclusive Fairytale. To which he won a “Rising Star of the Year” award.

Additionally, SEVENTEEN has also finished shooting Nana’s Tour, the group’s version of Youth Over Flowers with PD Na Yeong Seok. Details about the show’s release are yet to be announced.

SEVENTEEN’s The8 Showcases His Paintings at the Prestigious Start Art Fair

SEVENTEEN‘s Xu Minghao, who also goes by his stage name The8, is set to make waves in the art world. As part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Start Art Fair, held during the Frieze period in October, The8 will showcase 11 of his artworks, marking a significant step in his journey as a visual artist.

The8 and his paintings

The8‘s paintings are expected to draw considerable attention. Among the showcased pieces is Rock Heart, which fans might recognize from the MV of his solo track “Hai Cheng.” This painting, filled with strong emotions, offers a glimpse into The8‘s profound connection to his art. Another piece, Dreams Come True, features calm blue and white tones, evoking the serenity of a moonlit sea.

The8‘s use of floral motifs in The Colorful Aura is particularly striking. He explained, “They just express my complex emotions. The emotions within me that I only understand.” The vibrant colors emit an ethereal feeling reminiscent of a photograph by Torkil Gudnason titled Electric Blossom. Another standout is Dragon Amidst the Storm, an abstract piece depicting a dragon caught in a storm, reminiscent of Jackson Pollock’s style.

The inclusion of The8‘s artwork at this prestigious international art fair is a dream come true for him. He had previously expressed a desire to see his creations displayed in a museum or gallery. This dream highlights his deep passion for art and his belief in the profound significance of his work. He felt that social media platforms wouldn’t capture their essence correctly.

While The8 is renowned for his dynamic stage performances with SEVENTEEN, his art reveals a tranquil and contemplative side. His works provide fans with a connection beyond music, offering an intimate look into his emotions and the multifaceted nature of his creativity.

A wide range of international art

The Start Art Fair, presented at the Saatchi Gallery in London, will also feature works by other young Korean artists. Start Art Korea organized a contest to mark the event’s 10th anniversary. Artists Hwang Seunghyeon, Kim Heeju, and Kim Minjeong emerged as winners from a field of 100 contestants. Film director Byeong-gil Jeong will also showcase his artwork. His pieces promise to intrigue art enthusiasts worldwide.

An official from the Start Art Fair said it’s an honor to be a domestic representative, especially when Korean culture is gaining global attention. They emphasized their commitment to discovering potential domestic artists and elevating the status of the Korean art world.

The fair kicked off with a VVIP preview on Wednesday, October 11, followed by a VIP Private View. General admission will span from Thursday, October 12, to Sunday, October 15, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a wide range of international art.
