RM’s Military Graduation Speech Ignites Discussion

At their recent military graduation, BTS’s RM and V were recognized as two of six elite trainees out of two hundred recruits. During the ceremony, RM delivered a speech via a pre-recorded video message. The speech delved into his experiences and reflections on his military service. It has since gone viral, sparking a wide range of reactions.

Many media outlets reported positively on the speech, stating that RM reportedly volunteered to deliver it. However, the response among ARMYs—BTS’s loyal fans—was divided. On one hand, some were skeptical about its authenticity. They suspected that RM might have been coerced into filming the video. Certain statements RM made in it appeared to contradict aspects of what he’s known to believe in, such as activism and free will. They alleged the speech was South Korean government propaganda aimed at motivating young men to be enthusiastic about military service.

On the other hand, some fans believed that the content sounded authentic to RM. They interpreted the speech as his genuine effort to encourage and support his fellow trainees. Additionally, a third group of fans criticized the public discourse surrounding the speech. They argued that it wasn’t intended for a wider audience and shouldn’t be subjected to external analysis or debate.

The controversy also led to criticism of keyboard warriors, particularly those not from South Korea, for their remarks on the country’s political situation and military policies.

RM military graduation ceremony speech

What did RM say in his speech?

Here’s the full speech, with minor edits for clarity:

“It’s true that I postponed my enlistment for a long time. Because I entered the military at a fairly old age, I was afraid and worried about many things. Also, because I enlisted late, most of my colleagues in the dorm I lived in were fellow trainees about 10 years younger than me.

“Through mental strength education, I realized the necessity of the military and the need for basic military training in Korea, a divided and armistice country. I had experiences I wouldn’t have had if it hadn’t been for the Army Training Center. In particular, the night march I completed a few days ago was the most memorable.

“As I marched with my colleagues all night and looked at the stars and cheered together during difficult times, I was able to feel the kind of camaraderie I had only heard about. Thanks to the great executives and squad leaders, I was able to complete many training sessions that were very unfamiliar to me in a rewarding and fun way.

“Lastly, I would like to say that although it would be ideal to live in a world where everyone doesn’t need to learn marksmanship, the peace that has been enjoyed in Korea for over 70 years couldn’t have been possible without the noble sacrifice, effort, and dedication of many people. We’ll do our best to carry out our mission.”

Despite the controversy, many agreed that RM’s speech highlighted his exceptional public speaking skills. It reminded fans of what he truly excels at—performing for sold-out crowds. This has only heightened the anticipation for his return to music in 2025 with BTS. – K-Pop News Writer

BTS’s V Heads to SDT Military Camp After Completing Basic Training

On January 16, Kim Taehyung, also known as V from BTS, completed his five-week basic training. He entered the Nonsan Training Center on December 11. Upon graduation, he emerged as one of six elite trainees out of two hundred recruits. This is a testament to his exceptional performance.

@kimsumarie888

#Taehyung qualified as an Elite trainee because: Managed to do 88 sit-ups in 2 minutes, 72 push-ups in 2 minutes, hit 16 out of 20 shots, ran 1.5 km in under 5 mins and 28 secs. When Taehyung enlisted, he chose to join the Special Task Force of the Capital Defense Command, also known as the Special Duty Team (SDT). Getting into the SDT isn’t easy due to its stringent application process. Before Taehyung, fewer young men attempted to join, given the difficulty of admission and intense training. However, on December 23, 2023, a Korean netizen noted in a Naver blog post that over 444 people applied for the SDT, a significant increase. Reportedly, only 91 were selected, with a selection rate of about one in every 4.9 applicants. This surge in applicants is attributed to Taehyung’s decision to join the team.

Joining the SDT means he has to take an additional three-week course after completing basic training. Two days after his graduation, he was spotted at a train station dressed in his military uniform and carrying his gear. Taehyung boarded a train bound for Jonghaenggyo Bridge to begin training at the Army General Administration School. The school’s excellent facilities contribute to its status as a premier institution for training in combat skills and leadership.

Taehyung will enjoy more perks

A former member of the Special Duty Team revealed in a blog that the specialized SDT training is notoriously challenging. It also lasts late into the night. Some trainees find it so demanding that they withdraw. In addition to physical fitness training, Taehyung will receive instruction in automatic target live ammunition, close-quarters battle, military police duties, preliminary rifle instruction, rappelling, and more. He will be trained by experts from the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy.

Despite the challenging nature of his training, Taehyung will enjoy more perks at the Army General Administration School compared to the Nonsan Training Center. Trainees are allowed television and phone usage as well as more free time. Furthermore, the Army General Administration School is known for providing delicious food.

Jimin and Jungkook Complete Basic Military Training

BTS’s Jimin and Jungkook have successfully completed their basic military training. They enlisted together under the buddy system in December last year. The completion ceremony, marking the end of their training, took place at the 5th Division’s Recruit Training Center on January 17.

X/@winnttaebear

Before the ceremony, Jimin wrote a heartfelt letter that was subsequently posted on Weverse. “A little over a month has passed. There are times when it feels like a long time, and there are times when it seems to go by quickly because Jungkook is next to me. It hasn’t been a long time but I already miss you a lot,” he began, addressing the fans.

“I say hello to the members on the pay phone, and Jungkook is also working hard in the military. He’s doing so well that the kids say, ‘As expected of Jungkookhyung.’ He sticks with me and gives me a lot of support and strength,” Jimin added. “I’ll be going to my assigned military base soon, and I’ll adjust and try to do my best. ARMYs, please be careful not to catch a cold, don’t get sick, eat well, and think only good thoughts. Anyway, I’ll write to you when I get to the base. I love you!”

X/@JJK_Times

Jungkook also updated fans after the completion ceremony simply by writing one word (“Unity!”) on Weverse. He dominated social media trends after this brief message, with fans expressing their joy and relief at seeing him complete basic training safely. Finally, Jimin’s father posted some photos from the completion ceremony on the Instagram page of his café. The photos came with a message for ARMY, in which Jimin expressed gratitude for their love and support.

What will Jimin and Jungkook do next?

During the ceremony, Jimin received a commendation from his division commander, a prestigious award given to the unit’s top trainee. This commendation includes benefits like an early promotion and five-day, four-night vacation. This achievement reflects his exceptional performance across various aspects of military training, including discipline, leadership skills, physical fitness, and tactical knowledge.

Both Jimin and Jungkook were initially assigned to the 5th Infantry Division, where fellow BTS member Jin is serving. However, after a more detailed second classification was conducted, Jimin and Jungkook were identified as suitable for a more specialized function and were reassigned to an artillery battalion. An artillery battalion uses large-caliber guns, howitzers, and mortars to launch powerful, long-range attacks against enemy forces and fortifications.

Jimin and Jungkook may end up operating the K55 or K9 self-propelled artillery pieces. The K55, a mobile howitzer with a 155mm cannon, offers rapid deployment and robust fire support. The more advanced K9 Thunder has greater range, firing rate, and mobility, among other enhancements. It was once used to fire warning rounds near the Northern Limit Line in response to North Korean provocations.

As they continue their service, away from the stage but ever-present in the hearts of the ARMY, Jimin and Jungkook are showing that they’re dedicated soldiers as well as talented musicians. Fans, though concerned for their safety, are proud of their achievements and await their musical comeback in 2025. – K-Pop News Writer

Look: BTS’ RM and V Graduate as Elite Trainees

RM and V of K-pop powerhouse BTS shared photos of themselves in military uniform as they completed their military training on January 16.

According to several media outlets, RM, whose real name is Kim Nam Joon, and V, whose real name is Kim Tae Hyung, graduated as two of the only six elite trainees in the 27th Recruit Training Regiment in Nonsan Training Center. A few clips of the singers receiving their respective awards also circulated on social media.

To recall, the BTS members started their enlistment on December 11, 2023. Now that they have completed the five-week basic training with honors, RM and V will now proceed to undergo regular mandatory service.

Several South Korean reports also shared that RM learned about comradeship in his experience. “I was able to naturally find the fun, fulfillment, and meaning of military life,” the septet’s leader said.

On the other hand, Jimin and Jungkook, who were the last two members to enlist, have also completed their basic military service this week.

ARMYs congratulate the BTS members

With the news of RM and V’s achievement, BTS’s fanbase, ARMYs, shared their congratulatory comments for the singers on social media.

A number of ARMYs expressed that they are proud of their idols. Meanwhile, others also took the time to wish the members good health while doing their service.

While the fans are celebrating RM and V’s milestone, ARMYs are also patiently waiting for the group’s reunion in the future. Currently, all seven members are undergoing their mandatory services.

Notably, the big fanbase is welcomed by some good news this 2024 as members Jin and J-Hope are set to be discharged in the latter half of the year. To recall, Jin became the first member to enlist in December 2022. Meanwhile, J-Hope followed the eldest member in April 2023.

After announcing their hiatus in 2022 and focusing on their solo careers, BTS promised to be back as a full group once all the members are discharged from the military in 2025.

HYBE Calls for Removal of Unofficial BTS-Themed Sculptures

HYBE, the management company of BTS, has initiated a nationwide removal of BTS-related murals and sculptures. According to a report by TenAsia, Samcheok City took down the BTS photo zone and guide signs at Maengbang Beach earlier this month. This decision followed an official letter from HYBE sent on December 21, 2023, demanding the removal of all BTS-related sculptures.

Many locations in South Korea are famous because BTS’s music videos were filmed there. Fans call these places “pilgrimage sites.” These include Maengbang Beach, the filming location of the “Butter” MV, and the Red Lighthouse in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk, known as the “BTS Lighthouse.” BTS murals in Busan’s Gamcheon Culture Village and murals dedicated to SUGA and V in Daegu contribute to their popularity.

However, HYBE is calling for the removal of BTS-related murals and sculptures from these sites. Attempts by Samcheok City to negotiate ultimately failed, leading to the removal of the popular tourist attraction. HYBE also called out the Nam-gu district office in Busan and Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province for using BTS’s logo and a mural of RM, respectively, for promotional purposes.

BTS Tourist Spots To Gradually Disappear

HYBE explains their stance

A company representative explained, “We don’t grant permission for streets, sculptures, and murals. We prohibit such creations as they could negatively influence the image of our artists when damaged or badly managed.”

This displeased some local authorities. They argue that putting up sculptures and murals at public expense for fans interested in visiting BTS’s filming locations serves a public interest. One official from an area featuring BTS-related tourist attractions expressed a desire to continue discussions with the company, hoping to reach a compromise through further talks.

Korean netizens largely agreed with HYBE’s decision to remove such installations. This consensus was especially strong after it was discovered that local authorities didn’t obtain permission first. HYBE’s stance highlights the importance of respecting intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry. – K-Pop News Writer

How HYBE Will Handle BTS’s Absence in 2024

HYBE redefined the K-pop landscape when it solidified its position in the ‘Big Four’—the four largest and most influential entertainment companies in the South Korean music industry. All eyes are on HYBE now as it’s getting ready to navigate a year without BTS, its top-selling act.

In 2023, BTS‘s album sales, including the members’ solo projects, constituted 22% of HYBE’s total album sales, underscoring the group’s pivotal role in the company’s revenue stream. With all BTS members in the military, Yuanta Securities is projecting a 0.4% decrease in HYBE’s annual sales for 2024. To mitigate this, HYBE is diversifying its focus to other artists in its stable.

On-point: How will 2024 K-pop scene look without BTS?

Among these artists, SEVENTEEN is set to embark on a stadium tour in January 2024. Meanwhile, ENHYPEN, fromis_9, and &TEAM are preparing for both domestic and international concerts. Other groups such as LE SSERAFIM, NewJeans, and TXT are expected to maintain their active presence in the music scene both domestically and internationally. Fans are also eagerly anticipating the return of BTS members Jin and j-hope to the music industry after they’re discharged from the military.

This month, PLEDIS Entertainment, a label under the HYBE umbrella, will debut TWS. This highly-anticipated group marks PLEDIS’s first new boy group since the debut of SEVENTEEN. TWS‘s first EP is scheduled for release on January 22. Additionally, two more groups are set to make their debut in the first half of the year: I’LL-IT, formed through JTBC’s show R U NEXT?, and KATSEYE, created through The Debut: Dream Academy.

HYBE is poised for success in 2024

HYBE is also focusing on its fan community platform and intellectual property (IP). Weverse, which serves as a space for fans to connect with artists, is undergoing functional improvements. It’s also looking to add more artists from Japan, Korea, and the US. The company is also planning to continue its foray into webtoons with new releases, such as the sequel to ENHYPEN’s Dark Moon: The Altar of the Moon. HYBE IPX plans to expand with pop-up stores and continue its urban concert play park project, “The City.”

Binary Korea, a HYBE subsidiary, is teaming up with Sandbox Network to launch a creator-centric fan community platform soon. Additionally, HYBE IM, with a focus on gaming, is poised to release the full version of ASTRA: Knights of Veda in the first quarter. Superton, an AI audio company under HYBE, is developing advanced AI voice solutions for gaming. This indicates HYBE’s ambition to establish a strong foothold in the AI audio industry.

[ASTRA: Knights of Veda] The beginning of the journey.

In line with global market trends, HYBE is adopting more international strategies. Bang Si-hyuk, HYBE’s Chairman, has emphasized the need for K-pop to evolve beyond its traditional boundaries. This evolution is reflected in the recent releases from HYBE artists like Jungkook, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans. They had more English lyrics and introduced creative variations to classic K-pop elements, such as intricate choreography.

With a focus on nurturing new groups, enhancing digital platforms, and developing innovative content, HYBE is poised for success in 2024 and beyond. – K-Pop News Writer

Jimin’s ‘Closer Than This’ Continues To Achieve Impressive Numbers

Jimin from BTS has achieved remarkable success with his digital single “Closer Than This.” Released on December 22, 2023, the song quickly gained traction, achieving 213,757 streams on its first day. It didn’t stop there—it surpassed 1 million streams on Pandora four days later, a record-breaking achievement for a K-pop soloist. (For the uninitiated, Pandora is a music streaming service that’s only available to US-based users.)

The song also debuted at number 20 on Pandora’s Top Thumb Hundred Chart, which ranks songs based on the number of “thumbs up” they receive over 30 days. In its first week, “Closer Than This” accumulated a total of 1,431,048 streams, marking the highest debut week for a K-pop soloist. As of December 26, 2023, Jimin recorded 329,505 monthly listeners on Pandora, maintaining the highest number of listeners among K-pop soloists. He also surpassed 65 million cumulative streams on Pandora, the most among BTS members.

지민 (Jimin) ‘Closer Than This’ Official MV

“Closer Than This” also ranked first for eight consecutive days in four categories (Digital Music New Releases, Digital Music Bestsellers, International New Releases, International Bestsellers) on Amazon US. Finally, on January 3, Billboard US announced that the song debuted atop its Digital Song Sales chart, making it Jimin‘s fifth leader, tying him with his bandmate Jungkook as the Korean soloist with the most No. 1 songs on that chart.

The song’s impressive performance in the US underscores Jimin’s immense popularity in the US. He has so many fans there that Korean media outlets now call the country “Jimmerica,” a portmanteau of “Jimin” and “America.”

His impressive trajectory

Meanwhile, in Japan, Jimin‘s “Closer Than This” topped the Billboard Japan Download Songs chart just three days after its release. This feat made him the only foreign artist to lead this chart with two Korean-language songs in a single year. In 2023, Jimin charted 13 songs on this chart, including five from his album FACE, and notable singles and collaborations like “VIBE” with Taeyang. “Closer Than This” also debuted at No. 84 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, marking his sixth entry on that chart.

The song also performed well on Japan’s Oricon charts. “Closer Than This” ranked first on the daily singles chart on December 22 and 23. On the weekly chart dated January 1, it recorded 1,366 downloads in two days. It went to No. 2, beating out songs by top Japanese artists. This achievement brought his total to 14 solo songs charted on Oricon.

FACE also performed well in Japan. It ranked third on the Oricon daily albums chart on December 14, and 17th on Oricon’s annual album ranking. Jimin eventually received his very first Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). This was for a K-pop solo artist for a Korean-language album, a continuation of his impressive trajectory.

Jimin’s new gift for ARMY 💜’Closer than this’

Only Jimin can break records with a fan song

Jimin released “Closer Than This” to assure his fans that he’ll always be there for them. The song holds special significance as he dropped it before enlisting in the South Korean military. Its lyrics contain references to BTS’s career and their connection with ARMYs worldwide.

“Whenever it rains, I’ll remember the times I sang in the rain/Whenever it snows, I’ll cherish how you smiled for me in the snow/On the spring day we meet again, I’ll tell you everything I couldn’t before/My love, my babe, forever by your side/Seven equals one, right, our hearts still beat as one,” Jimin sings. (Did you catch the reference to one of BTS’s biggest hits in those lines?)

Media outlets worldwide heaped praise on “Closer Than This.” One writer noted that only Jimin can break records with a fan song. Its success is a win for BTS, Jimin, their fans, and the entire K-pop industry as a whole. – K-Pop News Writer

BTS’s j-hope Posts New Year’s Message on Weverse

As 2024 dawned in South Korea, BTS‘s j-hope surprised fans with not one, but two heartfelt New Year’s messages. Despite serving in the South Korean military as a special forces soldier, his love for the fans remains unwavering.

His first message was shared across BTS’s official social media channels. As translated by @uarmyvibe on X (formerly known as Twitter), the message read, “Happy New Year, ARMY! It is 2024, everyone. Happy New Year. I sincerely hope that the year 2024 will be filled with only happiness for our ARMY! Let me give you some good news for the new year. Hobi will be discharged within this year. Of course, it’s a bit close to the end. Haha! Around that time, I think gifts for you will be gradually revealed. Please look forward to them! Anyway, as you start 2024 with Hobi’s message, hope will be with you and it will be a good start. More than anything else, health comes first. Don’t be sick! Be happy! I love you!”

In a longer post on Weverse, j-hope reflected on his activities in 2023. He talked about going to award shows and Paris on his own, and hinted that he has more surprises in store for ARMY. He also admitted that he’s looking forward to being discharged.

“I enlisted after living busily and intensely. Like that, I’ve already spent nine months as a soldier and am already preparing to see the day of my discharge (of course, it ends in October). What I feel is that I can only think about how I want to show you all a cool side of myself again, even a day earlier, and I miss you all just as much!” he wrote.

j-hope was as optimistic as ever

Despite admitting that he misses and worries about the other BTS members, j-hope was as optimistic as ever in his post. He expressed his excitement for what the next year has in store for all of them.

“While I miss our members too, I also worry, and on one hand, I feel a sense of relatability, which also gives me strength. I can say this because I’ve experienced it first! But I’m sure everybody feels the same,” he continued. “Before sleeping, I think about a lot of things and encounter a variety of dreams. Things that were a given and trivial have become ideal, and for a while, they relieve fatigue and let me release a stiff breath. My sleep tonight, as we transition to the new year, will be like that too, right? The day I faithfully finish my military duty makes me even more full of energy for the beginning of 2024.”

BIBI Admits Having BTS’ RM and Jungkook Phone Numbers

BIBI might be closer to some BTS members than initially expected. The “Animal Farm” singer revealed she has the personal numbers of RM and Jungkook. Hilariously, she then asked the idols’ fans not to be angry with her for having the contact.

BIBI Admits Having RM and Jungkook’s Contact Numbers on Her Phone

In a recent interview with Glamour magazine, singer BIBI gave fans a glimpse into her phone and shared details about her contacts, revealing that she has the numbers of BTS members RM and Jungkook.

When asked about the most famous person in her contacts, BIBI mentioned RM, but she hesitated, indicating that they might not be that close, and humorously added, “We’re not that close,” while expressing uncertainty about whether RM still uses the same number.

BIBI then disclosed that she also has Jungkook’s contact, another BTS member, in her phone. However, she playfully insisted that she is not close with either of them, addressing ARMY (BTS’s fanbase) and jokingly saying, “ARMY, don’t come for me.” She quickly clarified herself, stating that she didn’t want any haters and expressing her love for ARMY.

The revelation of having RM and Jungkook’s contacts sparked interest and excitement among fans. However, some ARMY members expressed their frustration playfully, pointing out that BIBI has had the members’ contact information all this time, yet there hasn’t been any indication of a collaboration song. The desire for collaborations between popular artists is common among fans, and the playful complaints from ARMYs reflected their anticipation for such a collaboration.

BTS, including RM and Jungkook, is currently serving in the military. Despite the physical distance and their busy schedules, fans are always hopeful for future collaborations that could bring together diverse talents within the music industry. BIBI’s candid revelation about having BTS members’ contacts added a lighthearted moment to the interview, showcasing the friendly dynamics between artists within the industry.
