BTS x James Jean Exhibit to Open at SM Megamall in the Philippines

HYBE Insight, HYBE Corporation’s exhibition brand, launched the BTS X James Jean: Seven Phases Exhibition earlier this year. Now, after months of anticipation from Filipino ARMYs, it has finally arrived in the Philippines. It opened on October 27 at Building A of SM Megamall and will run until December 3. The exhibit offers fans an exclusive opportunity to delve into the K-pop supergroup’s world through the artistic lens of James Jean.

Who is James Jean?

James Jean is a Taiwanese-American visual artist. His pieces often weave together otherworldly elements, creating dreamlike compositions rich in symbolism. Employing a variety of media, Jean’s artistry spans digital art, painting, and traditional drawing techniques. He blends contemporary subjects with techniques from Eastern and Western classical art forms. His art has graced numerous publications and exhibitions worldwide, and he has published several books showcasing his illustrations and sketches.

Jean’s commercial success includes illustrations for comic books and various series covers, earning him multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards. His notable work for DC Comics’ Fables series has received widespread acclaim. Beyond commercial illustrations, Jean has carved out a significant presence in the fine arts and the fashion industry. His collaborations with brands like Prada have produced intricate and whimsical designs featured in advertising campaigns and on runways.

The BTS exhibit is one of Jean’s larger-scale multimedia projects, featuring 31 installations that capture the essence of each member, offering visitors a unique connection with their favorite idols. “It’s called ‘Seven Phases,’ as in the Seven Phases of the moon. I researched every member and discovered they each had unique personalities and characteristics. I tried to bring it out in paintings and create stories based on their nicknames and unique traits,” James Jean said in a video featured at the exhibit.

BTS transformed

In the exhibit, each BTS member is transformed into a visual metaphor that resonates with their personalities and public personas. “I discovered RM was a night owl, so I created a winged creature based on his night owl ideas. Jimin is known as the most ethereal, so I turned him into mushrooms called champignon. For j-hope, the sunshine of the group, I turned him into the sun god,” James Jean explained, detailing the thought process behind his artistic interpretations.

He elaborated on the other members, saying, “Jin is known as ‘Worldwide Handsome,’ and he refers to himself that way, but there is this old story of Narcissus turning into flowers. For V, I have him being surrounded by gemstones called Violane. For SUGA, known as ‘little meow meow,’ so I thought of putting him in happy beach scenes. Jungkook is known as ‘rabbit,’ so I have him surrounded by rabbits.” Each piece in the exhibit is a reflection of the members’ individual stories and the imagery they evoke, crafted with Jean’s signature blend of fantasy and reality.

The exhibit also portrays RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook as totems bursting with color. In a piece called “The Garden,” James Jean reimagines them as flower spirits. For that one, he drew inspiration from a line in the BTS song “The Truth Untold” that goes, “Bloomed in the garden of loneliness, a flower that resembles you.”

Visitors can also view sketches and drafts of the pieces, providing insight into the artist’s creative process. For some ARMYs, the exhibit is a chance to connect with the South Koreans beyond their social media posts, records, performances, discography, and chart data. The exhibit also offers an exclusive look at BTS‘s assets, such as their awards and concert apparel.

“A lot of ARMYs have been waiting for this. We are so glad after so many years BTS is again here in the Philippines in some form,” said Kris Jacomina, a representative from Nice Entertainment. Nice Entertainment is the promoter responsible for bringing the exhibit to the Philippines.

Look: SNSD’s Taeyeon Drops Emotional Teaser for ‘To. X’

SONEs are buzzing with excitement as SNSD’s Taeyeon has announced that she’ll be releasing her long-awaited fifth mini-album To. X

On Monday, November 6, Taeyeon treated her fans to a sneak peek of what’s to come by releasing a teaser video for To. X.

In the short clip, the vocalist is seen portraying a character breaking up with a lover over a text message. “As much as I liked you, I tried to compromise for you. Now I’m saying goodbye. I’m gonna block you,” the text from the teaser read.

Accompanied by this heart-wrenching message are artistic photographs of an apartment in disarray. On the first teaser alone, fans are already promised an emotional narrative. Moreover, fans are already anticipating the topic of the songs and the album’s theme since the teasers already served as a visual metaphor for a bad breakup.

Aside from the teaser, the SNSD member also released an artistic comeback scheduler. Arranged like a series of photos, the artist appeared to be pondering on whether to “delete all memories and reset them all.” Notably, Taeyeon will be releasing highlight clips, teasers, and samplers before the official album’s release on November 27.

Taeyeon is back!

Even before the first teaser was released, fans have been eagerly awaiting for Taeyeon’s return as SM Entertainment have been rescheduling the idol’s comeback several times now.

Moreover, To. X will serve as the artist’s first comeback in more than a year and a half. Her second full-length album, INVU,  was released in February 2022.

Since February 2023, the agency SM Entertainment has been hinting that Taeyeon will make a solo comeback. At first, they said that the new offering from the SNSD star will be out by April. However, these plans were postponed, leaving fans eagerly waiting for the highly-anticipated album.

Then, the label published a preview of their upcoming releases, which mentioned that Taeyeon will release a solo album by the third quarter of 2023. But the singer didn’t release any new music within that time frame.

In mid-October, SM Entertainment confirmed that Taeyeon is gearing up for her mini-album that will be out by November.

Although additional details about To. X have yet to be announced, fans are eager to see what this seasoned artist will bring to the table this time around.  Especially since Taeyeon has a remarkable track record of delivering memorable and impactful music that resonates with fans.

As a solo artist, Taeyeon has delivered hit after hit. Among her popular songs are “What Do I Call You,” “Set Myself On Fire,” “Fine,” and “Dear Me.”

Why Jungkook’s New Music Video Is a Standout Piece

Jungkook’s debut solo album, GOLDEN, is bannered by the title track “Standing Next to You.” It’s no surprise that its official music video captivated fans, what with its rich narrative and scenes showcasing the K-pop idol’s impressive dance skills. But the video’s allure doesn’t stop there. Here, we delve into four key aspects that make it a standout piece: the director’s vision, the iconic filming locations, the enigmatic femme fatale, and the way Jungkook paid tribute to BTS. Read on to explore each facet in detail.

정국 (Jung Kook) ‘Standing Next to You’ Official MV

The director’s vision

The music video was directed by Tetyana Robertivna Muinyo, known professionally as Tanu Muino. A Ukrainian designer, filmmaker, photographer, and stylist, she was born on December 7, 1989. She spent her early years in Havana with her Cuban father before moving to Ukraine. Her career in music video direction soared in 2016 when she began collaborating with Ukrainian singer Monatik. Her talent has led her to work with a diverse array of artists across various genres and countries.

Muino’s directorial style is distinguished by its vibrant imagery and compelling narrative techniques. Her portfolio includes collaborations with a roster of high-profile artists such as Katy Perry, Lizzo, Post Malone, Rosalía, and Yungblud. She directed the music videos for Cardi B‘s “Up,” Doja Cat‘s “Attention,” Elton John and Britney Spears“Hold Me Closer,” Harry Styles“As It Was” and “Daylight,” and Sam Smith‘s “I’m Not Here to Make Friends.” She also directed Lil Nas X‘s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” which earned her the MTV Video Music Award for Best Direction in 2021. She was also recognized as Music Video Maker of the Year at the M1 Music Awards in 2018.

The iconic filming locations

The video was filmed at the abandoned Kelenföld Power Plant in Budapest, Hungary. Constructed in 1914, the power plant was once a state-of-the-art facility and played a crucial role in Budapest’s electrical supply. Its control room, which boasts an Art Deco style, has been a popular location for film and photography due to its unique aesthetic. After serving the city’s infrastructure for decades, parts of the power plant were shut down in the 2000s, leading to its partial abandonment. The site has since attracted urban explorers and photographers from around the world, drawn by its historical significance and architectural beauty.

Another location featured in the video is the Hungaroring racetrack. Located in Mogyoród, near Budapest, Hungary, it has been the venue for the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986. It was the location of the first Formula One race behind the Iron Curtain. The circuit’s narrow, twisty, and bumpy track presents a challenge for drivers and provides an exciting spectacle for motorsport fans. The Hungaroring also hosts other racing events and experiences for motorsport enthusiasts.

The enigmatic femme fatale

As mentioned, Jungkook has an on-screen partner in the video, played by Ukrainian model Pasha Harulia. Discovered on social media at the age of 16, she swiftly ascended the ranks of the fashion world. She made her runway debut in Prada’s Spring 2018 show, where she notably donned Miu Miu attire, signaling the start of her journey with some of the most esteemed brands in the industry. She quickly learned the importance of prioritizing and exerting her best effort in every job, a rule she diligently follows. Her social media pages are a testament to her work, often adorned with snapshots from photoshoots with luxury brands like Gucci and Hermes. These posts showcase her modeling prowess, her personal style and the high-profile nature of her assignments.

Beyond her striking looks and modeling talent, people also know Harulia for her activism. Amid the Russian invasion of her homeland, Ukraine, she has been actively participating in protests and using her platform to support her country. Her dedication to her career is matched by her passion for her country’s well-being, making Harulia a model who stands out not just for her work but also for her stance in the face of adversity. In an interview with Vogue at the height of the conflict, she expressed commitment to the cause. “We leave almost every day to protest. If there is a meeting, we will go there. Thankfully, we are in a great country for protesting. People here know how to protest, and that makes me very happy. Many people care and give us support,” she said.

Jungkook pays tribute to BTS

The music video exceeded expectations, with its quality visuals and compelling choreography leaving fans in awe. Theories abound as they dissected the video, with many suggesting it pays tribute to iconic BTS songs through its lyrics and visuals. References to their past are woven throughout the video. For instance, the scenes in which Jungkook has wings are a nod to “Black Swan.” When he sings the word “DNA” in the chorus, he does the signature dance move from the song of the same name. Finally, the Michael Jackson-inspired moves in “Dynamite” are also mirrored, reinforcing the video’s tribute to BTS‘s legacy.

LOONA and ARTMS’ Heejin Opens Up About Making Solo Debut

Former LOONA member Heejin has reflected on her idol career as she embarked on a new endeavor as a solo artist.

On October 31, Heejin released his first solo mini-album K, which carries the title track “Algorithm.”

Notably, this new solo music from the idol has been a long-awaited moment for her fans. Since Heejin’s last solo offering was around seven years ago, with the solo song ViViD” that was released in October 2016. At the time, she became the first member to be introduced in the “Monthly Girls” project that marked the start of K-pop girl group LOONA.

Moreover, K also served as Heejin’s first official release after moving to Modhaus in March 2023. In November 2022, she filed her injunction against former label BLOCKBERRY Creative. Together with fellow LOONA members Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Cheorry, she won their injunctions in January 2023.

Under Modhaus, the ARTMS project was formed to feature the activities of the LOONA members under the agency.

Heejin on her solo debut

Given how significant K is in her career, it’s unsurprising that the singer has a lot to say about her idol journey and solo venture.

In a press conference with Korean media, Heejin opened up how she has blossomed as a solo artist with the album. “As I bloom once again and flourish, I wish to present myself to an even wider audience,” she said.

For her solo debut, she made sure to have deep involvement in the album’s production. For instance, she took part in writing lyrics for “Algorithm,” “Video Games,” “Nokia” and “Addiction.”

Aside from that, she also had a hands-on approach in terms of the album’s production. “I made suggestions for the album’s cover art, I asked the team to edit the font of the teaser image. And even suggested the clothes that I would wear in the album,” she shared.

With this, Heejin declared that she now feels like a “real artist.” “I believe I now have the power to truly stand on my own two feet,” she asserted. “I’ve learned to give my own opinion and even disagree with the agency if necessary.”

LOONA reunion?

Apart from her solo sting, she also dabbled on the recent legal battle that the LOONA members went through.

Despite what happened, she said that the dream of a full LOONA reunion with all 12 members is still very much alive. Especially that all members themselves share a positive outlook on the possibility of reuniting with their fans.

As of now though, Heejin said that it’s more feasible for fans to expect a release from the ARTMS project. “While we haven’t started any official preparation for our debut, I think we will be able to present ourselves [as ARTMS] with all five members next year,” she said.
