Bang Si-hyuk Arranged ENHYPEN’s ‘I Need U’ Cover for Spotify

For the 10th anniversary of Spotify’s K-Pop ON! (온) playlist, the BELIFT LAB boy group ENHYPEN recently unveiled their rendition of BTS’s “I Need U.” Their cover is markedly different from the original’s electronic synth sound. Instead, it’s an acoustic, almost serene take on the song, masterfully arranged by HYBE Labels’ chairman Bang Si-hyuk. This is notable because Bang PD had never granted any artist permission to release covers of BTS’s songs before. Therefore, ENHYPEN’s cover marks a first—and the significance of this milestone isn’t lost on the boys themselves. How can it be, when the song itself means a lot to them?

In an interview released soon after the cover dropped, Heeseung, the group’s eldest member, shared his personal connection to the song. “I was much younger when I listened to this song for the first time, as you can imagine. My older brother would put this song on while he was preparing to go to school. I sort of woke up to this song every morning, so I grew up to be fond of it.”

“We decided to remake ‘I Need U’ for three reasons,” added ENHYPEN’s leader Jungwon. “It was meaningful because it marked the beginning of BTS sunbaenim’s The Most Beautiful Moment in Life series. We used to listen to it all the time. Some of us even performed this song on I-LAND. This was also the very first time HYBE chairman Bang PD-nim approved the recording and release of a cover. He even participated in the process. It was an honor for us to have him on board.”

ENHYPEN has learned a lot

ENHYPEN’s rendition of ‘I Need U’ is more mellow and incorporates elements of afrobeats. Sunghoon said this stylistic change is an opportunity for ENGENEs to see a new side of the septet. “Since this is a song that everybody knows and loves, I really want people to focus on what kind of spin we put on it.”

Jake revealed how they decided which member would sing which part. “What we usually do when we record is we go in one by one, sing the whole song, and the producer sort of chooses what lines would fit each member. When I went in to sing the whole thing, I was told that the second verse is going to be Ni-Ki’s so I didn’t get to sing that part.”

This cover also presented a challenge for Sunoo, who sings a high-pitched note in the bridge. “I was concerned about it, but practiced a lot. Our own rendition is obviously meant to be different from the original, so I tried really hard to put my own style into it as well,” he shared.

ENHYPEN says they’ve learned a lot since coming together on the survival show I-LAND nearly four years ago. “We’ve done a lot of performances and we’ve become more professional. With this particular cover, we’ll be able to showcase how much we’ve grown,” declares Sunghoon.  Their take on ‘I Need U’ is now available for streaming on Spotify‘s K-Pop ON! (온) playlist. – K-Pop News Writer

Look: ENHYPEN Announces 2024 ‘Fate Plus’ Encore US Stops

Attention, ENGENEs! K-pop boy group ENHYPEN is set to take the stage once again as they announce additional stops for their highly-anticipated 2024 FATE PLUS encore concert tour.

On February 7, BELIFT LAB unveiled the schedule for the US leg of the group’s FATE PLUS stops. Initially, the encore concert was only set for a two-night residency at the KSPO Dome in Seoul on February 24 and 25. However, since tickets for both nights quickly sold out, the agency added another show for February 23.

After their three-night encore concerts in Seoul, South Korea, ENHYPEN is taking their tour to the United States. From April to May, the group will be gracing five cities, including notable stops in California, Illinois, and New York.

Furthermore, the announcement about the encore stops came after the group’s successful conclusion of their initial FATE concert tour. To note, the Bite Me” hitmakers wrapped up their 21st show at the New Clark City Stadium in Tarlac, Philippines on February 3.

In this concert tour, the group visited 13 cities in the world for the last six months. In a press release, BELIFT LAB said that a total of 327,000 fans attended the group’s concert. According to reports, 85,000 of those were from the US leg of the concert. Now that the septet is returning to the United States, more of their fans have the chance to see them perform live.

Fans call for the agency to give ENHYPEN time to rest

While concert announcements are usually met with excitement, some fans of the group are worried about ENHYPEN’s schedule. On social media, several ENGENEs are asking BELIFT LAB to give the group ample time to rest.

Some pointed out that the act has been on tour for three years in a row. Others also raised that some members have been getting sick on tour. Aside from these concert stops, fans also pointed out that the group have been busy doing comeback activities in between.

Several ENGENEs emphasized that the timing of the encore concert was “unreasonable” and “exploitative.” Meanwhile, others called for BELIFT LAB to put the members’ health and well-being their priority.

As of writing, BELIFT LAB has yet to react to the fans’ clamor.

ENHYPEN, STAYC, and Shownu x Hyungwon to Release ‘Spotify Singles’

Spotify has big plans to celebrate the anniversary of K-Pop ON!, its flagship global K-pop playlist designed to help listeners discover and enjoy the best of the genre. The celebration will see the launch of a special series of Spotify Singles. The artists behind these singles are ENHYPEN, SHOWNU X HYUNGWON (of MONSTA X), and STAYC, centered around the theme of “My First K-Pop Crush.”

These singles will include covers of songs by their sunbaes (senior artists) that first ignited their passion for K-pop. In that sense, these singles aren’t just a tribute to fans’ and artists’ journeys into the genre. They’re also an invitation for K-pop stans worldwide to celebrate the artists who pioneered it.

The Spotify Singles for the K-Pop ON! First Crush campaign are set to be released exclusively on Spotify every two weeks, starting with ENHYPEN’s single on February 16. This will be followed by SHOWNU X HYUNGWON’s single on February 29, and STAYC’s release on March 15. Here’s what one of the High Up Entertainment girl group’s members has said about their track.

Spotify to offer ‘exclusive bonus content’

In addition to the music, Spotify is offering a series of exclusive bonus content on its K-Pop ON! Video Podcast and YouTube channels. This content will range from performance videos to behind-the-scenes looks. Each piece of content will allow fans to delve into the stories of the artists’ first K-pop crushes. ENHYPEN, SHOWNU X HYUNGWON, and STAYC will discuss their song choices. They’ll also reveal how their sunbaes inspired their own journeys in K-pop.

Jungjoo Park, Korea Head of Music at Spotify, expressed excitement about the campaign, stating, “Beyond the celebration of our commitment to helping K-pop travel the globe and connecting Korean artists with fans and new audiences, Spotify’s K-Pop ON! First Crush campaign is also a powerful expression of how K-pop touches lives, spreads positivity, and unites listeners regardless of where they are from or the language they speak.”

The initiative is part of Spotify’s ongoing efforts to drive discovery and bring K-pop to its global audience. Since its launch in 2014, the K-Pop ON! playlist has been “saved” by over 5.3 million Spotify users worldwide and has generated billions of streams for Korean artists, significantly expanding the genre’s reach beyond regional boundaries, languages, and cultures. The number of yearly streams from the playlist has seen a staggering 5647 percent increase globally since 2015. – K-Pop News Writer

ENHYPEN’s Jake Addresses Starbucks Incident on Weverse Live

ENHYPEN member Jake recently faced backlash after being seen drinking from a Starbucks cup during a live broadcast earlier this month.

@hyeinlurve

#jake #enhypen #enha #jakeenhypen #starbucks🤮 . . . . . jake drinking starbucks, his apology❤️‍🩹

♬ love maze – ulan

What did Jake do?

The issue with Starbucks began when it took legal action against its own workers’ union. This union had expressed support for Palestine, and Starbucks’ decision to sue them for doing so sparked controversy. The company, known for its liberal, progressive image, faced criticism for what appeared to be a lack of support for a humanitarian cause. Consequently, many people in the U.S. started boycotting Starbucks, criticizing the company for not standing with the oppressed and for suing its employees over their social media posts.

Starbucks has since issued a statement denying any political affiliations. The company also refuted claims that it is pro-Israel or involved in funding the conflict in Gaza. Additionally, Starbucks clarified that it has no branches in either Gaza or Israel.

When fans saw Jake’s Starbucks cup, they left comments on his live broadcast. Some told him not to buy Starbucks anymore “as it sponsors massacres in Gaza.” Others demanded that he apologize and educate himself. Jake noticed their comments and transferred his drink into a glass cup, but that did little to quell the backlash. He eventually decided to put his drink away altogether.

Later, he left a comment on a fan’s Weverse post about the incident. He apologized and promised ENGENEs it wouldn’t happen again.

K-netizens react

While international fans were pleased with the idol’s apology, K-netizens weren’t. They argued that Jake‘s actions shouldn’t be linked to the global boycott because Starbucks Korea operates independently from its American counterpart, Starbucks Coffee Company.

Starbucks Korea started as a 50/50 joint venture in 1999, co-owned by Shinsegae Group’s E-Mart Inc. and Starbucks Coffee Company. In 2021, Starbucks Coffee Company sold its entire 50% share. This increased E-Mart Inc.’s ownership to 67.5% as they acquired an additional 17.5%. GIC Private Limited, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, snapped up the remaining 32.5%. Understanding this is key to grasping Starbucks’ operations in different international markets.

K-netizens also noted that international fans are quick to criticize idols over such issues but often remain silent on other matters, like Korea’s historical and territorial disputes with Japan. This indicates that K-netizens believe international fans partake in selective activism, not fully comprehending all relevant issues.

Jake isn’t the only artist who has faced criticism for patronizing Starbucks. In December 2023, Jeon Somi received immense backlash for a video in which she was seen sipping from a Starbucks cup, leading to the closure of several of her largest fan sites. Although Somi didn’t publicly address the issue, she silently removed the video from her TikTok account. – K-Pop News Writer

ENHYPEN is currently touring North America and that opens up the possibility of sharing their music with a wider audience. In a rather surprising turn of events, an unexpected new fan has expressed their affection for Heeseung. Interestingly, the admirer is none other than the iconic Duolingo owl mascot, affectionately known as Duo.

ENHYPEN Member Heeseung Finds an Unexpected New Fan

While it is unclear whether Duo learned about ENHYPEN through other fans, the edits are certainly a playful and light-hearted gesture. It also showcases the delightful connections that can be made in the world of fandoms and the unexpected ways in which they can intersect.

Enhypen Getting Mobbed at Airport Causes Uproar Among Fans

Fans of K-pop boy group ENHYPEN took to social media to express their outrage at the act’s recent encounter at the Incheon Airport with fans.

ENHYPEN recently performed at the KPOP LUX festival in Madrid, Spain, and returned to South Korea on Monday, July 24. However, the group was met with an enthusiastic throng of fans at the airport.

In the videos circulating on social media, the crowd flocked the members right after they walked through the airport doors, with some fans even crossing barricades and coming dangerously close to the artists.

The clips also showed that some of the ENHYPEN members were even getting pushed by the crowd, while others were almost getting separated from the group. Many netizens also pointed out how member Jake is visibly seen aiding Sunoo in navigating the crowd.

ENGENEs, or fans of ENHYPEN, were immediately infuriated by the incident, calling for tighter security measures from both the group’s agency BELIFT LAB and the airport.

Fans online also berated the crowd at the airport, saying that their lack of control in handling their excitement harmed the members.

“Jake got pushed, his jacket got grabbed. Even the reporter had to ask him if he was okay. Sunoo got separated from the group at some point. This is terrible. I genuinely feel so frustrated,” one tweet read.

Another wrote, “It’s been 3 years since ENHYPEN is getting mobbed at the airport by fan sites and fans in general, every time. They need to move and do something to protect their artists.”

“If even the press had to ask the boys whether they’re okay or not there’s something very wrong with the way ‘fans’ are acting. this conversation is getting very tiring,” another fan said.

As of writing, BELIFT LAB has yet to address the issue. But it can be recalled that the agency released in September 2020 a fan etiquette guideline after ENHYPEN was also mobbed at the airport following their event on Jeju Island.

Composed of Jungwon, Heeseung, Jake, Jay, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki, ENHYPEN was formed through the reality talent program I-LAND. They made their debut in November 2020, and are known for songsDrunk-Dazed,” “FEVER,” “Polaroid Love,” andFuture Perfect.”

ENHYPEN is also set to embark on their second world tour titled FATE, which will kick off on July 29 and 30 at the KSPO Dome in Seoul, South Korea. It will also have stops in Japan and the United States.
