JYP Entertainment Addresses Lee Junho Tax Audit Report

2PM member and actor Lee Junho recently came under public attention following an intensive tax audit report he underwent last year. In response to the news, his agency, JYP Entertainment, has issued a statement to clarify the situation.

JYP Entertainment Clarifies Lee Junho Tax Audit Report

Reports revealed that in September 2023, the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 2 conducted a “non-regular comprehensive tax audit” on Lee Junho. This type of audit is typically aimed at high-net-worth individuals, particularly those operating as corporate entities, to ensure compliance with tax regulations. As a result of the audit, Lee Junho reportedly paid a substantial amount in taxes.

JYP Entertainment addressed the matter, emphasizing that the audit was not conducted under suspicion of tax evasion.

After confirming with him, we can state that he fully cooperated with the non-regular comprehensive tax audit conducted by the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 2 in September 2023. This audit was not initiated due to any allegations of tax evasion,” the statement read. “With the guidance of a tax advisor, Lee Junho faithfully filed his taxes and paid the additional amount requested, which resulted from differences in perspective between the tax authorities and the tax advisor.”

This was the first non-regular tax audit he received in 17 years of his career,” they added. “He adhered to all legal procedures and paid the disputed tax amount, and we would like to emphasize that there was no intentional tax evasion involved.”

Since his debut, Lee Junho has diligently fulfilled his tax obligations,” the statement added. “We would like to reiterate that there have been no dishonorable activities regarding his tax compliance.”

The agency further stated, “We respect and comply with all tax laws and regulations, and we will continue to manage and review these matters carefully to prevent any future misunderstandings.”

Fans of Lee Junho have expressed support for the artist, praising his transparency and professionalism throughout the situation.

KG Files Lawsuit to Leave VCHA and Terminate Exclusive Contract

KG has decided to leave VCHA. The idol also revealed that she had filed a lawsuit to terminate exclusive contract with JYP Entertainment.

VCHA’s KG Files Lawsuit to Terminate Exclusive Contract with JYP Entertainment

On December 7, KG, a member of VCHA, announced through her Instagram Stories that she has filed a lawsuit to leave the group and terminate her exclusive contract with JYP Entertainment.

Yesterday I filed a lawsuit because I have decided to terminate my contract with JYP Entertainment and exit VCHA after experiencing incidents of abuse and mistreatment by certain staff members. I feel it was not a good environment for my mental health and I apologize if my leave disappoints any of you,” the statement read. “I am not in support of the working and living conditions that led a member to attempt suicide. Nor do I support an environment that encourages eating disorders and has caused members to self harm.

She added, “I made this decision back in May and am still waiting for release from my contract. I am worried for the girls who remain in VCHA, my friends, who I truly love and care for. I also realized if I remain at JYP Entertainment, I am not able to become the artist I aspire to be, as I really enjoy songwriting and production,”

KG further added, “I have accumulated a massive amount of company debt, while being paid very little for the intense work and extreme limitations on our personal lives.”

What Happens to VCHA?

Formed in 2023 through the global project “A2K” (America2Korea)—a collaboration between JYP Entertainment and Republic Records—VCHA was introduced as a girl group aiming to bridge Western and Korean pop music. The group garnered significant attention upon debut but faced challenges soon after.

Earlier this year, VCHA was scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza, one of the world’s largest music festivals. However, they abruptly withdrew from the lineup, sparking concerns about their activities and future. Since then, the group has remained on hiatus, and little has been shared about their plans.

KG’s decision to take legal action sheds light on potential internal issues within the group and agency. Fans await further updates.

JYP Entertainment Vows Legal Action Against Deepfake TWICE Videos

JYP Entertainment has announced its plans to take legal action against the creators and distributors of deepfake TWICE videos.

JYP Entertainment Addresses Deepfake TWICE Videos

On August 30, the company issued an official statement in English via TWICE’s social media channels, addressing the issue. The announcement follows the recent discovery that members of TWICE, along with several other female idols, have become victims of deepfake pornography being circulated in various online chatrooms.

“We are gravely concerned about the recent spread of deepfake (AI-generated) videos involving our artists,” the statement reads. “This is a blatant violation of the law, and we are in the process of collecting all relevant evidence to pursue the strongest legal action with a leading law firm, without leniency.”

“We want to make it clear that we will not stand by while our artists’ rights are violated and will take decisive action to address this matter to the fullest extent possible,” it concludes.

What’s Happening in the School Chatrooms?

These chatrooms, initially created with the intent to humiliate and degrade women, were first brought to light earlier this month. The disturbing trend also began with school chatrooms being used to share sexually explicit deepfake images and videos of classmates, which quickly gained widespread attention.

JYP Entertainment’s swift response to the situation makes it one of the first K-pop agencies to publicly declare its intent to take legal action against those responsible for creating and spreading these harmful videos. The company has also made it clear that they will not tolerate any violations of their artists’ rights and will pursue strong legal measures to protect TWICE members from such malicious activities.

This announcement also underscores the growing concern over the misuse of AI technology in creating deepfakes and the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement to combat this issue.

Weverse, YG Plus, SM, and JYP Refund Violation Accusations

The Korea Fair Trade Commission sanctions major K-pop companies for illegal refund practices

The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) has taken action against several major companies in the K-pop industry. This includes Weverse Company, YG Plus, SM Brand Marketing, and JYP 360. These companies, which handle the online sales of idol merchandise, faced sanctions for illegal refund practices that unfairly targeted consumers, particularly teenagers.

The KFTC discovered that these companies have been shortening the legally mandated refund period. Under current e-commerce law, customers are entitled to withdraw from a purchase within three months or within 30 days of discovering a defect. However, Weverse Company and others informed customers that even defective products could only be refunded within seven days. Additionally, they imposed unreasonable restrictions, such as requiring video evidence of the unboxing process to qualify for refunds.

This behavior, known in Korea as “gapjil” (abuse of power), effectively shifted the burden of proof onto the consumers, violating e-commerce laws. These practices not only limited customers’ rights but also exploited the loyalty of teenage fans, who are less aware of their legal protections.

In response, the KFTC issued corrective orders and imposed fines totalling 10.5 million KRW (approximately 7,740 USD) on the companies involved. Weverse Company was fined approximately 3 million KRW (2,210 USD), while YG Plus, SM Brand Marketing, and JYP 360 each received fines of 2.5 million KRW (1,840 USD). The fines were reduced as the companies voluntarily corrected their practices following the investigation.

A KFTC representative emphasized protecting teenage consumers in the entertainment industry and stated that the commission would continue to monitor for similar violations. They warned that stricter penalties, including business suspensions, could follow if such practices persist.

HYBE and Other Three Big Agencies’ Online Stores Fined By Fair Trade Commission

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) fined South Korea’s four largest K-pop entertainment companies—HYBE, SM, YG, and JYP—for violating e-commerce consumer protection laws. On August 11 KST, the FTC imposed a total fine of 10.5 million KRW (approximately $7,700 USD) on these agencies and issued corrective orders to ensure they comply with the ‘Electronic Commerce Act’.

The FTC penalizes the Big 4 K-pop agencies for violating consumer protection laws in their online stores

Fair Trade Commission found that these companies set excessively strict and unfair conditions for refunds on idol-related merchandise, including albums and official goods. The FTC highlighted practices like shortening the legally mandated refund period and requiring unreasonable documentation, such as filming product unboxings to qualify for refunds when items were missing.

Weverse Company, associated with HYBE, received a fine of 3 million KRW. SM Brand Marketing (SM), YG Plus (YG), and JYP Three Sixty (JYP) were each fined 2.5 million KRW.

Among the violations, SM’s policy required customers to return products due to a change of mind within seven business days of delivery, which goes against the law, allowing customers seven days from the receipt date to decide on a return. SM and JYP also broke the law by demanding that customers submit claims for defective or incorrect items within seven days of delivery, while the law permits returns within three months from receipt or 30 days from discovering the defect.

The companies also denied compensation for lost items after a specified period, restricted returns if packaging was opened or damaged, and demanded video proof of unboxing for claims of missing items. These actions placed an undue burden on consumers, violating legal protections that should favor the buyer.

Moreover, in response to the FTC’s findings, all four companies corrected their policies voluntarily, which led to reduced fines. However, the FTC’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of fair consumer practices in the e-commerce space, especially within the influential K-pop industry.
