Stray Kids Sets Summer Comeback, Charlie Puth Collab

Stray Kids are gearing up for a summer comeback with a digital single called “Lose My Breath,” featuring American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth. The track is set to drop on May 10 at 1:00 PM KST and serves as a precursor to a highly-anticipated Korean album due later in the year. This marks the first time Stray Kids has collaborated with a Western artist. As such, some say this song is proof that Stray Kids is looking to significantly expand their international presence.

A wave of controversy

While the collaboration has stirred considerable excitement among some fans, it has also unleashed a wave of controversy because of Charlie Puth’s involvement. Some fans of Stray Kids, known as STAYs, have voiced their intent to boycott “Lose My Breath.” They also asked the group’s agency, JYP Entertainment, for a version of the song without Puth’s vocals. This reaction stems from issues Puth faced in the past, namely the accusations of him being a Zionist and a rape apologist.

Charlie Puth has faced criticism over his perceived support for Israel in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Since October 7, 2023, the conflict has resulted in significant casualties. The Palestinian death toll reached 33,843, with at least 76,575 injured. Puth’s family, including his sister, has been identified by some as Zionists, and Puth himself has liked and shared posts by other celebrities who support Israel.

Moreover, Puth has been accused of being a rape apologist due to his support for Swedish music producer Dr. Luke, whom American pop star Kesha accused of abuse. Additionally, Puth’s social media history includes support for controversial figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Stray Kids’ reputation

Despite the controversy, the excitement for “Lose My Breath” remains high. The teaser for the song quickly amassed millions of views, indicating strong interest in the collaboration. The group is also set to appear at this year’s Lollapalooza festival. It will be held at Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, on August 2. As of this writing, tickets to the festival are sold out.

Stray Kids previously performed at Lollapalooza Paris, making them the first K-pop artist to headline that particular edition of the festival.

As the song’s release date approaches, all eyes will be on how this single will impact Stray Kids’ reputation and what it will mean for their future projects. – K-Pop News Writer

Phone Case Brand Slammed for Secretly Auctioning Off Stray Kids’ Clothes

After a recent fan signing event in Japan, Stray Kids and their fans, STAYs, were dragged into a controversy involving SLBS, a prominent phone case brand and the group’s sponsor. Apparently, SLBS conducted a secret auction to sell clothes worn by the Stray Kids members. This sparked significant outrage among fans and raised questions about privacy and consent.

The incident occurred after the artists and their staff had left the venue. Unbeknownst to the group and their management, SLBS auctioned off the clothes worn by the members during the event. The auction was conducted without any prior consent from JYP Entertainment, leading to an uproar when the details came to light.

Fans quickly took to social media to express their discontent, calling for accountability and transparency from both JYP Entertainment and SLBS. They demanded a clear explanation for the unauthorized auction of the members’ clothing, which many viewed as a violation of the artists’ personal and professional boundaries.

A rift between SLBS and Stray Kids

SLBS issued a public apology on Twitter. “We sincerely apologize for the incident and to everyone that had been deeply hurt and disturbed by it, including the attendees, fans who had learned about what had happened through social media, and most importantly, the artist, agency, and all interested parties,” SLBS wrote.

The company explained that they held the auction as a surprise, thinking it would be a nice thing to do for the fans. However, the backlash opened their eyes to the fact that it was completely inappropriate. Expressing regret for the oversight, SLBS said all items sold at the auction would be retrieved. Also, they said all buyers would get a refund.

Despite the apology, many fans felt that the brand’s response was insufficient. Fans argued that it did little to address the issue. Furthermore, the apology disappeared after only a few days. Some also noted that Stray Kids didn’t use their SLBS phone cases during their latest live broadcast, hinting at a potential rift between them and the brand. This observation led to calls for JYP Entertainment to terminate their contract with SLBS, reflecting the depth of STAYs’ displeasure and the perceived breach of trust. – K-Pop News Writer

Felix Struts His Stuff on the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2024 Runway

When Stray KidsFelix participated in Louis Vuitton’s Paris Fashion Week show, he marked his official debut in the high fashion world. The event showcased the luxury brand’s ready-to-wear fall 2024 line and saw Felix don a distinctive ensemble. The K-pop idol wore furry white gloves, sleek white and silver pants, and a textured white turtleneck. He carried a gray handbag in one hand as he strutted down the runway. His blonde hair was a frosty shade of platinum, which matched the icy vibe of his outfit.

The show celebrated Nicolas Ghesquière’s tenth anniversary as the artistic director of women’s collections at Louis Vuitton. According to WWD, the “collection, while not exactly a greatest hits compilation, could be read as a distillation of his work at the house. There were futuristic takes on sportswear, like a graphic two-tone windbreaker with a curved zipper, or a silver flight suit with scarification marks.”

Meanwhile, Nicole Phelps of Vogue wrote, “The jackets heavily embroidered with metallic threads and embellished with cabochon stones recalled the frock coats of the Louis XVI collection for spring 2018 he presented in the medieval part of the Louvre. Sparkling skirts that bubbled below the knees seemed to be a callback to spring 2021, a pandemic-time show he staged without an audience. And the swirling asymmetric hems of the spectacular fringy evening numbers evoked the deconstructed scuba-suit dresses from his resort 2017 show in Rio.”

There were plenty of K-pop stars in the audience, including BLACKPINK’s Lisa, NewJeansHyein, and TWICE’s Nayeon. Hollywood celebrities Ana de Armas, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Sophie Turner were also seen checking out the brand’s offerings.

Fashionable Felix

During a recent live broadcast on Instagram, Felix shared some behind-the-scenes tidbits from the show. “Nicholas prepared two large bouquets of flowers, and they were white. He prepared them for me before the show. He sent them to my waiting room, so I took a photo of them. It was sweet of him to send flowers, because in a sense it showed that he cared. He really wanted to cheer me on before the show.”

Felix also gave a shout-out to Squid Game star Jung Hoyeon, who opened the show and joined him onstage for the finale. “On the runway, Hoyeonnim took really good care of me and taught me quite a lot. I’m thankful to Hoyeonnim for teaching me how to walk on the runway. I received feedback and tips on how to do it, which was quite helpful.”

Felix’s relationship with Louis Vuitton began in August 2023 when he was announced as a house ambassador. Ghesquière praised Felix for his “unique personality” and “audacious sense of style.” Prior to his Paris Fashion Week appearance, he attended Ghesquière’s 2024 cruise show for Vuitton. Ghesquière also styled Felix for the Lollapalooza music festival in Paris.

Fashionable Felix wasn’t the only member of Stray Kids who participated in fashion-related events last month. I.N. went to the Alexander McQueen show while Seungmin attended a Loewe event. BTS’s Jungkook Named Billboard’s Best K-Pop Artist

Billboard has officially declared BTS’s Jungkook as the best K-pop artist of 2024 in its inaugural ranking of the top 100 K-pop stars. The media outler made the announcement to mark the upcoming launch of Billboard Korea in May.

The 2024 Billboard K-Pop Artist 100 marks the first time the US magazine has ranked K-pop artists. The rankings were assembled by the chart teams at Billboard and its Seoul branch, Billboard Korea, which is set to publish its first issue in June. These rankings drew from artists’ activities across the Billboard 200 albums chart, Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, and Billboard Boxscore. The Boxscore tracks tour attendance and revenue, covering the period from January 7, 2023, to December 30, 2023.

Group members were generally listed together unless notable solo activities warranted individual recognition. That’s what happened with Jungkook. This year’s rankings included members from 16 groups: (G)I-DLE, aespa, ATEEZ, BLACKPINK, BTS, ENHYPEN, FIFTY FIFTY, ITZY, LE SSERAFIM, NCT 127, NCT Dream, NewJeans, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT), and TWICE.

How did Jungkook take the top spot?

Jungkook’s rise to the top of Billboard’s ranking followed the success of his first solo single “Seven (feat. Latto)” and the album GOLDEN, both released in 2023. “Seven (feat. Latto)” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It remained at the top of the Billboard Global 200 for seven weeks, was hailed as the No. 1 Global Song of the Summer, and snagged the Top Global K-Pop Song at the Billboard Music Awards. Furthermore, Jungkook’s musical prowess was evident in his hit Hot 100 collaborations. These included the top-five hit “3D (feat. Jack Harlow),” which received a remix from Justin Timberlake, and “Too Much” with The Kid LAROI and Central Cee.

GOLDEN further cemented his status by debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It set a record for the largest sales week ever for a K-pop solo act with 210,200 equivalent-unit albums for the chart week dated November 18, 2023. His track “Standing Next to You” is on track to become his longest-running Hot 100 hit, having spent 16 consecutive weeks on the tally thus far. These accomplishments put Jungkook at the top of a list that evaluates activity on the Billboard 200, Hot 100, and Billboard Boxscore touring data over the past year.

Who else is on the list?

Second on the list is Stray Kids’ leader, Bang Chan, followed by Lee Know in third place. The rest of Stray Kids’ members—Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N—also made the top 10, in that order. This indicates a strong showing by the group in Billboard’s rankings. Girl group FIFTY FIFTY, which only has one remaining original member, Keena, secured the No. 10 spot.

In anticipation of its May launch, Billboard Korea plans to host a kick-off event in Seoul. This event will celebrate the K-pop artists featured on the 2024 list as guests of honor. It’ll further highlight the global influence of K-pop and its artists. – K-Pop News Writer

Hyunjin is making waves in fashion

Versace itself reaped substantial benefits from this partnership, becoming the top brand of Milan Fashion Week with an EMV of 19.9 million USD. This success was largely due to its association with Hyunjin. His role as Versace’s global brand ambassador, starting on July 20, 2023, was historic. He became the first K-pop industry icon to represent the Italian luxury brand in such a capacity.

Meanwhile, as Hyunjin makes waves in fashion, his group, Stray Kids, continues to do so in music. They laid out all their plans for the year, including their fourth fan meeting, through their STEP OUT 2024 video. They’re also set to perform at Italy’s I-Days Milano music festival on July 12, 2024. Stray Kids to Open Pop-Up Store in Seoul

Stray Kids is set to launch an enchanting pop-up store and cafe in Seoul featuring their SKZOO characters. According to JYP Entertainment, the Stray Kids x SKZOO Pop-up & Cafe and SKZOO’s Magic School will open their doors from March 14 to March 31. This event will be hosted at two locations: AP Again in Seongdong District and Soundwave in Mapo District. Fans and the general public can check both out to immerse themselves in the magical world of SKZOO.

This event will complement the band’s magician-themed fan meeting. SKZ’s Magic School is scheduled from March 29 to 31 at the KSPO Dome. Tickets for this special gathering are available via Yes24. Pre-sales start on March 4 at 8:00 PM for STAY fan club members, and general admission opens on March 6 at 8:00 PM. Fans are encouraged to keep an eye on Stray Kids’ official SNS accounts for more details.

All about SKZOO

In 2020, Stray Kids created animal characters representing each member of the group. These characters have appeared on official merchandise and in animated YouTube videos. (Check out the ones where they dance to Stray Kids hits like “God’s Menu” and “S-Class.”) Each SKZOO character has a lot in common with its human counterpart.

Wolf Chan, for example, shares leader Bang Chan’s leadership qualities and his affinity for the wolf emoji. Lee Know’s character, a rabbit named Leebit, draws inspiration from his bunny-like front teeth and playful nature. Dwaekki, a pig-rabbit hybrid, is a nod to an infamous sculpture Changbin once made. Hyunjin got a ferret as his SKZOO character because he’s tall and long like a ferret. His character’s name, Jiniret, is a combination of his nickname “Jinnie” and the word “ferret.”

Stray Kids “특(S-Class) (SKZOO ver.)” M/V

Han got the character Han Quokka due to his resemblance to a quokka. A quokka is a small marsupial native to southwestern Australia. Quokkas are known for their distinctive round face and perpetual smile, which has earned them the title of the “world’s happiest animal.”

Felix’s character, BbokAri, shares his sunny personality. BbokAri’s name is a combination of Felix’s Korean name, Yongbok, and “병아리” (byeongari), the Korean word for “chick.” Seungmin got PuppyM because he acts like a puppy sometimes, and I.N. got FoxI.NY because he has foxy eyes—or so fans say.

Stray Kids recently won big

In other news, Stray Kids recently won big at the Hanteo Music Awards and the People’s Choice Awards. The latter named them Group of the Year, while the former awarded them Best Performance. Talk about big wins! They’re also set to make history as the first K-pop boy group to headline the BST Hyde Park music festival in London on July 14.

The upcoming SKZOO pop-up store and cafe not only celebrates Stray Kids’ creativity but also offers fans a unique way to connect with the group and their beloved SKZOO characters. – K-Pop News Writer
