S.Coups Blocks SEVENTEEN’s Access to His Credit Card on ‘NANA Tour’

On January 5, the first episode of NANA Tour with SEVENTEEN finally aired, bringing excitement to the group’s fans with its unique concept. The show is a spin-off of the Korean travel reality show Youth Over Flowers, which is known for its unique format where the production team surprises the cast with spontaneous trips, often with little to no prior notice. It has featured locations like Peru, Zimbabwe, and more. The trips involve the cast completing tasks and winning games to ensure their survival in an unfamiliar environment.

In SEVENTEEN’s case, the members were whisked away to Italy after playing two shows in Tokyo, Japan last September as part of their FOLLOW Tour. Unfortunately, their leader S.Coups couldn’t join the tour or the Italy trip due to a knee injury. Instead, he sent the members a letter through Na Young-seok, the producer behind NANA Tour with SEVENTEEN

Jeonghan read the letter out loud in the first episode. It said, “Thank you for picking up my letter. I feel so sorry for you guys going without any preparation. You can use this card however you want. I’ll be waiting for you well in Korea. Have fun. I love you!”

S.Coups’s love for SEVENTEEN knows no bounds

The members were both surprised and touched to find that S.Coups had sent his credit card along with the letter, giving them the freedom to use it however they liked. Dino, the group’s youngest member, was put in charge of the card. But after watching his members’ enthusiastic spending, S.Coups blocked their access to the card mid-show.

Fans and the members alike thought what S.Coups did was amusing. Some thought Seungkwan’s purchase of a funny t-shirt was the last straw. (For the record, the shirt featured the Mona Lisa doing the “dabbing” dance move, which involves dropping the head and raising one arm while bending the other at the elbow.) Others felt S.Coups stopped overseas payments on his credit card after seeing Mingyu showing off a long receipt for all the groceries he bought on the trip. Apparently, S.Coups’s love for SEVENTEEN knows no bounds—except maybe when it comes to money.

Fans can catch the NANA Tour with SEVENTEEN every Friday on tvN Asia at 8.40 PM KST. More exclusive footage from the show is available for fans on Weverse. – K-Pop News Writer

North Korean Teens Face Hard Labor for Watching K-Drama

BBC Korea recently obtained footage from 2022 showing two 16-year-old North Korean boys being publicly sentenced to 12 years of hard labor. Their crime? Watching K-dramas. The footage, captured in an outdoor stadium filled with students, shows the boys in handcuffs as uniformed officers chastise them for their actions. Such footage is exceptionally rare. North Korea forbids the leaking of photos, videos, or any evidence of life in the country to the outside world. This clip has reportedly been used in North Korea for ideological education and to warn citizens against watching “decadent recordings.”

The South and North Development (SAND) Institute, a non-profit organization working with North Korean defectors, gave the footage to BBC Korea. The clip includes narration echoing state propaganda and condemning the influence of South Korean culture. It also reveals the boys’ full names and addresses. Historically, minors involved in cases like this ended up in youth labor camps. However, recent developments indicate the imposition of harsher penalties.

North Korean teens sentenced to hard labour for watching South Korean films

Life in North Korea is difficult

In 2020, Pyongyang implemented a law that made consuming or distributing South Korean music, movies, or TV shows punishable by death. According to SAND CEO Choi Kyong-hui, Pyongyang sees the spread of K-dramas and K-pop as a threat. North Korean officials are afraid that admiration for South Korean culture could weaken their monolithic ideology centered around the Kim family.

North Koreans first got a taste of South Korean media in the 2000s. At the time, South Korea had a “sunshine policy,” which saw them offer economic and humanitarian aid to the North. Seoul ended the policy in 2010, but South Korean media continues to reach the North by way of China.

For many North Koreans, K-dramas help them forget how difficult life in the North is. Another defector in her 20s remarked, “In North Korea, we learn that South Korea lives much worse than us, but when you watch South Korean dramas, it’s a completely different world.” That statement is exactly why North Korean authorities are intent on keeping their people from consuming South Korean media. – K-Pop News Writer

LE SSERAFIM Announces Comeback With Third Mini Album ‘Easy’

After a nine-month hiatus, LE SSERAFIM is poised for a grand return on February 19 with their third mini-album EASY. Their agency Source Music made the announcement via the fan community platform Weverse at midnight on January 22.

EASY marks the girl group’s first Korean release since their first full-length album UNFORGIVEN in May last year. This comeback signifies a new chapter for LE SSERAFIM, in which they’ll venture into uncharted territory. Their previous releases focused on themes of confidence and strength. This time, their new material will be “an honest exploration of the uncertainties and concerns beneath LE SSERAFIM’s confident exterior.”

In conjunction with the announcement, their record label HYBE and Source Music released a logo motion video for the new album on their official SNS accounts and YouTube channel. The video features LE SSERAFIM’s logo and ends with the phrase “MAKE IT LOOK EASY.” Seconds later, the words “IT LOOK” are crossed out, leaving fans to wonder what that could mean.

LE SSERAFIM demonstrated consistent growth

LE SSERAFIM has demonstrated consistent growth with each release. ANTIFRAGILE sold over 400,000 copies on release day and 567,000 copies in its first week. This was an improvement from FEARLESS, which recorded first-week sales of 307,450 copies. UNFORGIVEN demonstrated their increasing popularity by selling over 1 million copies on its first day. By the end of its first week, the album sold a remarkable total of 1,258,001 copies, setting a new record for the group’s first-week sales. It also made a mark in the US, entering the Billboard 200 at No. 6.

Their first English digital single “Perfect Night,” released in October last year, remained on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart for two straight weeks. It also broke records on Spotify’s Weekly Top Song USA chart. It was the first English song by a female K-pop artist to sweep the top spot in major music charts in Korea, such as Circle Chart and Melon, a career high for LE SSERAFIM.

Additionally, LE SSERAFIM is scheduled to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 13 and 20.  The group’s journey continues to be remarkable, and their upcoming album is poised to add another impressive chapter to their story. – K-Pop News Writer

Yoon Sang Refutes Nepotism Claims About RIIZE’s Anton

Yoon Sang, a highly acclaimed musician in South Korea, recently appeared on tvN’s You Quiz on the Block. He was joined by his son Yoon Chan Young, who debuted in SM Entertainment’s new boy group RIIZE as Anton.

Yoon Sang denied involvement in his son’s career

Yoon Sang’s reputation in the music industry is well-established. He started his career in the 1980s and gained fame for blending various genres, including pop, electronic, and classical music. Over the years, Yoon Sang worked on numerous musical projects, both on his own and with other artists. In fact, he has produced and written songs for some of SM Entertainment’s top acts, including BoA and TVXQ.

Because of Yoon Sang’s ties to SM Entertainment, some have accused Anton of trading on his father’s name to become famous. These speculations have followed the idol since his debut with RIIZE in September 2023. So when the father-son duo sat down with You Quiz on the Block host Yoo Jae Suk, they seized the opportunity to clear the air.

During the interview, Yoo Jae Suk asked Anton how he got into SM Entertainment as a trainee. Anton replied that he won a spot on the agency’s roster after passing several auditions. Eventually, his hard work paved the way for him to get into RIIZE. Yoo Jae Suk expressed his surprise, saying, “Wow, you auditioned after signing up by yourself? Well, people have said Yoon Sang got you in.”

In response, Yoon Sang remarked, “Whenever I hear such things, I always think that people really don’t know how the world works.” With that one statement, he indirectly denied any involvement in his son’s career.

Important perspectives

This wasn’t the first time Anton and Yoon Sang addressed the nepotism allegations. A few weeks ago, Anton went viral for his response to a netizen calling him a “nepo baby,” a derogatory term used to describe those who purportedly benefit career-wise from their famous or successful parents. This happened after he and his father performed together at the 2023 Gayo Daejejeon.

The debate on nepotism in entertainment is complicated, but Anton and Yoon Sang offer important perspectives. They counter the common beliefs and rumors about artists with connections or family ties in the industry. – K-Pop News Writer

RM’s Military Graduation Speech Ignites Discussion

At their recent military graduation, BTS’s RM and V were recognized as two of six elite trainees out of two hundred recruits. During the ceremony, RM delivered a speech via a pre-recorded video message. The speech delved into his experiences and reflections on his military service. It has since gone viral, sparking a wide range of reactions.

Many media outlets reported positively on the speech, stating that RM reportedly volunteered to deliver it. However, the response among ARMYs—BTS’s loyal fans—was divided. On one hand, some were skeptical about its authenticity. They suspected that RM might have been coerced into filming the video. Certain statements RM made in it appeared to contradict aspects of what he’s known to believe in, such as activism and free will. They alleged the speech was South Korean government propaganda aimed at motivating young men to be enthusiastic about military service.

On the other hand, some fans believed that the content sounded authentic to RM. They interpreted the speech as his genuine effort to encourage and support his fellow trainees. Additionally, a third group of fans criticized the public discourse surrounding the speech. They argued that it wasn’t intended for a wider audience and shouldn’t be subjected to external analysis or debate.

The controversy also led to criticism of keyboard warriors, particularly those not from South Korea, for their remarks on the country’s political situation and military policies.

RM military graduation ceremony speech

What did RM say in his speech?

Here’s the full speech, with minor edits for clarity:

“It’s true that I postponed my enlistment for a long time. Because I entered the military at a fairly old age, I was afraid and worried about many things. Also, because I enlisted late, most of my colleagues in the dorm I lived in were fellow trainees about 10 years younger than me.

“Through mental strength education, I realized the necessity of the military and the need for basic military training in Korea, a divided and armistice country. I had experiences I wouldn’t have had if it hadn’t been for the Army Training Center. In particular, the night march I completed a few days ago was the most memorable.

“As I marched with my colleagues all night and looked at the stars and cheered together during difficult times, I was able to feel the kind of camaraderie I had only heard about. Thanks to the great executives and squad leaders, I was able to complete many training sessions that were very unfamiliar to me in a rewarding and fun way.

“Lastly, I would like to say that although it would be ideal to live in a world where everyone doesn’t need to learn marksmanship, the peace that has been enjoyed in Korea for over 70 years couldn’t have been possible without the noble sacrifice, effort, and dedication of many people. We’ll do our best to carry out our mission.”

Despite the controversy, many agreed that RM’s speech highlighted his exceptional public speaking skills. It reminded fans of what he truly excels at—performing for sold-out crowds. This has only heightened the anticipation for his return to music in 2025 with BTS. – K-Pop News Writer

BTS’s V Heads to SDT Military Camp After Completing Basic Training

On January 16, Kim Taehyung, also known as V from BTS, completed his five-week basic training. He entered the Nonsan Training Center on December 11. Upon graduation, he emerged as one of six elite trainees out of two hundred recruits. This is a testament to his exceptional performance.

When Taehyung enlisted, he chose to join the Special Task Force of the Capital Defense Command, also known as the Special Duty Team (SDT). Getting into the SDT isn’t easy due to its stringent application process. Before Taehyung, fewer young men attempted to join, given the difficulty of admission and intense training. However, on December 23, 2023, a Korean netizen noted in a Naver blog post that over 444 people applied for the SDT, a significant increase. Reportedly, only 91 were selected, with a selection rate of about one in every 4.9 applicants. This surge in applicants is attributed to Taehyung’s decision to join the team.

Joining the SDT means he has to take an additional three-week course after completing basic training. Two days after his graduation, he was spotted at a train station dressed in his military uniform and carrying his gear. Taehyung boarded a train bound for Jonghaenggyo Bridge to begin training at the Army General Administration School. The school’s excellent facilities contribute to its status as a premier institution for training in combat skills and leadership.

Taehyung will enjoy more perks

A former member of the Special Duty Team revealed in a blog that the specialized SDT training is notoriously challenging. It also lasts late into the night. Some trainees find it so demanding that they withdraw. In addition to physical fitness training, Taehyung will receive instruction in automatic target live ammunition, close-quarters battle, military police duties, preliminary rifle instruction, rappelling, and more. He will be trained by experts from the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy.

Despite the challenging nature of his training, Taehyung will enjoy more perks at the Army General Administration School compared to the Nonsan Training Center. Trainees are allowed television and phone usage as well as more free time. Furthermore, the Army General Administration School is known for providing delicious food.

Stalker of Apink’s Eunji Sentenced to Prison

A notorious stalker of Apink member Eunji has finally been sentenced to prison, South Korean media outlets reported on January 18.

Through an official statement, Apink’s agency, IST Entertainment gave an update about the legal matter. In a translated post, IST Entertainment said that they filed a complaint against the said stalker who has been harassing Eunji since 2020.

According to reports, judge Lee Yong-Je, who handled the case, sentenced the 59-year old stalker, hereby referred to as Cho, to one year in prison and two years of probation for violating the Act of Punishment of Crime of Stalking.

Moreover, the Seoul Central District Court also ordered Cho to pay a fine of 100,000 Korean Won. Furthermore, Cho also has to fulfill 120 hours of community service and complete a 40-hour lecture program about prevention of repeated crimes related to stalking.

IST Entertainment then reassured the fans that they will continue to monitor the rights of their artists and take legal measures involving defamation, invasion of privacy, and other cases, without leniency.

Instances of Eunji being stalked by Cho

Other media outlets also reported that the court revealed that Cho started stalking Eunji in March of 2020. At the time, Cho sent a package to the singer’s home with a message that read: “Will you please accept me as your butler and partner?”

Two months later, this instance was followed by Cho tailing the Apink vocalist to her hair and makeup shop.

Then in April and July of 2021, the stalker was found waiting for Eunji around her apartment. In the same year, Cho received their first warning from the police. To which they made a promise that Cho will not approach Eunji again.

However, Cho continued to send messages to the idol through their phone and the DearU bubble chat room service. Eventually, Eunji had to discontinue using the platform due to Cho’s intense stalking.

The court, explaining their decision, stated that Cho’s acts were beyond the level of support a fan would send to a celebrity.  Moreover, judge Lee also pointed out that despite the victim’s shock, anxiety and fear regarding the situation, the stalker showed no signs of remorse.

As of writing, Eunji has yet to release her personal statement about the matter.
