Coldplay Dedicates Performance of ‘The Astronaut’ to BTS’s Jin

Coldplay‘s Chris Martin recently paid a touching tribute to BTS‘s Jin. He dedicated a performance of “The Astronaut” to Jin and the rest of BTS. This special moment occurred during the Tokyo leg of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. The band performed an acoustic version of the track, originally written in English, for the first time in Tokyo. The final version, featuring Korean verses by Jin, was released in October 2022.

Coldplay – The Astronaut (acoustic cover), Live at Tokyo Dome 6th Nov 2023

From Coldplay, with love

“This is particularly for Jin and the BTS boys,” Chris Martin declared before the performance, sending love to the members currently serving in the military. He added, “In honor of BTS, we are going to play a song that we gave to Jin. We’ve never played this before on our own. Maybe we’ll never play this again. This is Jin’s song, this is called ‘The Astronaut’ and we send this with love to everybody in any situation anywhere.”

“The Astronaut,” named Rolling Stone’s Best Song of 2022, was Jin‘s first official solo release. It has earned 281 million Spotify streams. Coldplay and Jin first did “The Astronaut” live during the Buenos Aires leg of the British band’s tour. That performance came a day after Jin released the song. Coldplay has performed “The Astronaut” live one other time, when they appeared on an episode of Saturday Night Live last February. They also played a mash-up of “Human Heart” and “Fix You.”

Co-written by Coldplay, Jin, and Norwegian DJ Kygo, “The Astronaut” is the second collaboration between BTS and Coldplay, following the chart-topper “My Universe.” Jin is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service in South Korea. He’s expected to return to the music scene in time for BTS’s 11th anniversary in June 2024.

Friendship and mutual respect

Coldplay has consistently shown their appreciation for Jin and his members. In July 2023, during a concert in Amsterdam, Chris Martin saw a fan sign that said, “I get heaven to myself when I’m with you.” He realized it was inspired by a line from “The Astronaut” and immediately gave a shout-out to Jin

The bond between Jin and Coldplay continues to grow. Before he enlisted, Jin gave Coldplay patches featuring Wootteo, a mascot he created for “The Astronaut” promotions. Wootteo has since become a symbol at the British band’s concerts, with Chris Martin proudly wearing his patch and sharing it with fans. Coldplay‘s gesture of dedicating “The Astronaut” to Jin is a testament to the friendship and mutual respect between these global icons.

Fans eagerly anticipate the reunion of Chris and Jin, cherishing their precious connection. Coldplay is still on tour, with upcoming dates in Kaohsiung, Jakarta, Perth, and Kuala Lumpur. They plan to return to Asia in 2024 for shows in Singapore, Bulacan, and Bangkok. – K-Pop News Writer

South Korean Military Cancels j-hope’s Appearance at Culinary Event

The South Korean military decided not to have BTS member Jung Hoseok, aka j-hope, attend a big cooking competition.

The Ministry of National Defense recently revealed that j-hope was supposed to host the International Military Culinary Competition. This event is a big deal, with people from countries like Singapore and the USA taking part. Organizers thought having a superstar like j-hope there would get the event more attention.

When talks began, the BTS member expressed interest in participating. Additionally, the military made a tentative agreement with BTS‘s agency, BigHit Music, for j-hope to simply host the event, without performing. Discussions on what he would wear and such were also underway. The Defense Media Agency even considered promoting the event using BTS-related video content.

For j-hope, it’s service over celebrity

However, the Minister of National Defense, Shin Won-sik, had second thoughts. Eventually, it was decided that it would be more appropriate for the members to demonstrate their dedication to their duties in uniform, as soldiers, rather than as celebrities. This decision was made to maintain the integrity of BTS’s stance on serving like anyone else. Before enlisting, the members had made it clear that they wanted to be treated like regular soldiers. This included not being featured or included in military-related events, despite their fame.

Luckily, BigHit Music understood this decision. While the military staff preparing for the event were disappointed, they also understood how the agency and the military leadership felt.

@ntrgrl22

That time the Korean military considered using #JHope as an MC for a military cooking competition but it was vetoed because they knew KDiamonds would band together in protest. #ARMY doesn’t play when it comes to our guys, BTS. #junghoseokbts #JungHoseok #BTSARMY #kdiamond Now no idol can be used outside of their military specialty.

Jin, the eldest member of BTS, enlisted in December 2022, followed by j-hope this April. Both are serving diligently as instructors and special forces soldiers at the recruit training center. SUGA began his service in September with minimal media attention. Previously, the military considered inviting Jin and j-hope to a professional baseball game but ultimately decided against it to avoid placing undue pressure on the members.

Wanting to serve without the trappings of fame is a testament to BTS‘s dedication to their roles as soldiers. It shows a humility that resonates with both their fans and the general public. As the military and BTS continue to navigate the balance between duty and stardom, this decision stands as a poignant reminder of their resolve to prioritize service over celebrity. – K-Pop News Writer

More details about Jimin‘s endeavors emerged during a live show on Weverse called Special Talk with Jimin. Jimin hinted at possibly holding a solo concert in the future and mentioned that he is currently focusing on taking classes and working out. He added that while he knows ARMYs are curious about what his next move will be, he’d rather leave it to their imaginations.

Fans react to the Ryan Tedder news

Jimin is expected to begin his military service by the end of 2023, according to HYBE. Fans are hopeful that he’ll release another album before his enlistment.

This incident with Ryan Tedder brings to mind something similar that happened on November 10, 2022, several months before the release of Jimin’s debut solo album, FACE. Grammy-winning music producer Austin Owens posted a picture with Jimin, sparking collaboration rumors. However, when FACE was released, Owens wasn’t credited on any of its tracks. The album featured collaborations with RM, the leader of BTS, and producers BLVSH, Chris James, EVAN, GHSTLOOP, Pdogg, and Supreme Boi. As a result, some are taking the Ryan Tedder news with a grain of salt.

Jimin’s Tattoo Artist Posts Shirtless Photos of the Star on SNS

BTS‘s Jimin has always captured fans’ hearts with his music and style, but recently, it’s his tattoos that are drawing significant attention. Tattoo artist Dong Hwa from Blind Studio took to social media to share a series of shirtless photos of Jimin, showcasing the intricate tattoos that adorn his body, and fans are absolutely thrilled.

Instagram/@dx2ta2

The “NEVERMIND” tattoo, prominently inked on his ribs, is perhaps one of Jimin‘s most famous pieces. Originally a temporary design, Jimin later decided to make it a permanent one. This tattoo, along with others, was revealed in the shirtless photos that have now gone viral, highlighting not only the art but also Jimin‘s chiseled physique.

Jimin’s other tattoos

Among the other tattoos he has is the number ’13’ on the inside of his wrist. Fans speculate that it could represent BTS‘s debut date or Jimin‘s birthday. Additionally, he has moons on his back. They were first seen during the promotions for his solo album FACE. In 2022, Jimin revealed that these tattoos were inspired by a piece of fan art by digital illustrator @ArizzoStudios on X (formerly known as Twitter). It was his bandmate Kim Taehyung, aka V, who showed the fan art to him.

Jimin’s other tattoos include the words “Young” and “Forever” near his elbows, echoing the BTS track “Young Forever,” and the word “Youth” inscribed in cursive behind his ear. Jimin also has the number seven tattooed on his finger, which symbolizes the BTS members’ unity. He once said, “Like I told you guys before, I wanted it here so that you’d be able to see it when I hold the mic when I sing, but because my hands are really small, you can’t really see it. you have to use a thinner mic to see it.”

The tattoo artist speaks

Dong Hwa, in sharing these photos, also shared his long-time connection with BTS, expressing his admiration for their passion and hard work. “After much contemplation, I’ve decided to post this. I regard them as cool musicians who have shown passion and perseverance for nearly a decade. I’ve known them since before their debut, and while I’ve worked on various projects with the company and the members, unfortunately, we haven’t been able to meet often due to their busy schedules. There were both big and small concerns I had while working with them, but my support has always been unwavering. Among the many projects I’ve been involved with, I’m sharing the tattoo photos we did with Jimin first. Please view them in a positive light.”

In addition to the tattoo reveal, Jimin has also been stirring excitement with a new dance video on Instagram, sporting impressive blonde hair and hinting at potential new projects. Fans are eager to see what “main dancer Jimin” has in store next. – K-Pop News Writer

Jungkook and TXT Win Big at MTV Europe Music Awards

BTS’s Jungkook and his dongsaengs TOMORROW X TOGETHER, also known as TXT, stood out as the sole Korean representatives to win trophies at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs). On November 6, MTV unveiled the recipients of this year’s Europe Music Awards. The award ceremony scheduled for November 5 in Paris, France. MTV canceled it due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

K-pop artists win 3 trophies at 2023 MTV EMA

Jungkook’s global musical impact

Leading the winners was Jungkook. He received three nominations and won two awards. First, he won Best Song for his hit “Seven (feat. Latto),” released in July. The song has been an international success, topping the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the one billion streaming mark on Spotify in the shortest time, and maintaining the number one spot on the Daily Top Songs Global chart for 70 days, enjoying immense popularity.

This marks the first time a K-pop soloist won this category. The only K-pop group to have received this award was BTS in 2020 with “Dynamite.” Jungkook beat notable artists like Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift.

The accolades for the golden maknae didn’t end there—Jungkook was also honored with the Best K-Pop award, further cementing his global musical impact. The Best K-Pop category, introduced in 2019, saw BTS win three times until 2021.

MTV celebrates talent

Meanwhile, the rising stars TXT garnered recognition in the Best Push Artist category, illustrating the dynamic presence of K-pop on the global music stage. Having won the Best Asia Act award last year this means they won awards two years in a row.

The Best Push Artist category highlights notable artists in the global music market, selected for the MTV PUSH campaign. This year, musicians from various genres who attempted differentiation and set new trends, were nominated, with TXT taking the win. They also took the PUSH Performance of the Year at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards held in the U.S. this past September.

The 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards had to forgo its offline ceremony this year, but the spirit of celebrating talent remains undiminished, with the winners reflecting the diverse, dynamic landscape of today’s scene. BTS’s RM Sparks Viral Trend, Boosts ‘Funsumer’ Economy

In the context of South Korea’s economy, the term “funsumer” refers to a consumer trend that prioritizes the entertainment value of products over their cost-effectiveness or practicality. This shift towards enjoyment and fun is vividly illustrated by the success of Chimney Puppy. This company has captured the hearts of funsumers and achieved remarkable sales figures.

Chimney Puppy’s story began with the viral snow duck clip craze of 2020. Founded a year earlier by Representative Yoon Chang-gun, it was the exclusive seller of these snow duck clips in Korea. The clips, which allow for the easy creation of duck-shaped snow sculptures, skyrocketed in popularity thanks to RM, the leader of the internationally acclaimed K-pop group BTS.

RM and ‘Ducktan Sonyeondan’

In January 2021, RM took to Twitter to share a delightful gift with the ARMY (BTS‘s fanbase)—a set of seven snow ducks he made, which he affectionately called “DTS” or “Ducktan Sonyeondan.” This act wasn’t just a whimsical start to the year. It also held special meaning as the number seven represents the seven members of BTS, and 2020 marked their seventh year together as a group.

RM also shared a photo of these snow ducks on Weverse. He captioned it with, “Waited one year,” suggesting that he had been planning this cute surprise. The posts were made around midnight on January 7 KST. They caused a stir on social media, with “joonie” (a nickname derived from RM‘s birth name, Namjoon) trending as fans shared their joy and affection for RM’s creation.

Fans found the posts endearing. Some were in stitches because they couldn’t help imagining RM running around Seoul making his snow ducks. Others were simply overwhelmed by the cuteness of the gesture. Unfortunately, the snow ducks melted away with the change of seasons, and RM, also known as the “God of Destruction” due to his tendency to accidentally break things, reported that he had broken the snow duck clip he used to create DTS.

When winter returned, and snow once again covered Korea, the hope for DTS’s comeback was high, but RM reminded everyone that the snow duck mold was still broken. Try as he might, he could only produce disproportionate or half-made snow ducks. But fans were pleasantly surprised when later, RM posted an Instagram Story revealing the successful comeback of OT7 DTS, much to the joy of ARMYs worldwide.

Instagram/@rkive

DTS’s comeback

The behind-the-scenes hero of DTS’s comeback was none other than Jin, BTS’s eldest member. After RM admitted to breaking his snow duck clip, Jin offered to buy him a new one. Jin also sent a clip to his brother and sister-in-law, who shared their own creation on Instagram. RM‘s influence and the power of social media led to a dramatic increase in demand for Chimney Puppy’s product.

Representative Yoon’s understanding of the market was key. He stated, “Consumers have a need for fun products,” acknowledging the growing trend of exchanging ‘useless gifts’—those that prioritize amusement over practicality, often chosen for their humor or uniqueness. Chimney Puppy, with its young workforce, was perfectly positioned to engage with and respond to this cultural shift.

The story of Chimney Puppy and RM‘s “endorsement” shows how the funsumer trend is shaping the South Korean economy. Companies are succeeding by focusing on fun products that encourage social sharing, and add a playful element to life. This trend is redefining business strategies by focusing on developing products that resonate emotionally with consumers, especially the youth. It aims to foster a more experiential form of consumerism. – K-Pop News Writer

BTS x James Jean Exhibit to Open at SM Megamall in the Philippines

HYBE Insight, HYBE Corporation’s exhibition brand, launched the BTS X James Jean: Seven Phases Exhibition earlier this year. Now, after months of anticipation from Filipino ARMYs, it has finally arrived in the Philippines. It opened on October 27 at Building A of SM Megamall and will run until December 3. The exhibit offers fans an exclusive opportunity to delve into the K-pop supergroup’s world through the artistic lens of James Jean.

Who is James Jean?

James Jean is a Taiwanese-American visual artist. His pieces often weave together otherworldly elements, creating dreamlike compositions rich in symbolism. Employing a variety of media, Jean’s artistry spans digital art, painting, and traditional drawing techniques. He blends contemporary subjects with techniques from Eastern and Western classical art forms. His art has graced numerous publications and exhibitions worldwide, and he has published several books showcasing his illustrations and sketches.

Jean’s commercial success includes illustrations for comic books and various series covers, earning him multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards. His notable work for DC Comics’ Fables series has received widespread acclaim. Beyond commercial illustrations, Jean has carved out a significant presence in the fine arts and the fashion industry. His collaborations with brands like Prada have produced intricate and whimsical designs featured in advertising campaigns and on runways.

The BTS exhibit is one of Jean’s larger-scale multimedia projects, featuring 31 installations that capture the essence of each member, offering visitors a unique connection with their favorite idols. “It’s called ‘Seven Phases,’ as in the Seven Phases of the moon. I researched every member and discovered they each had unique personalities and characteristics. I tried to bring it out in paintings and create stories based on their nicknames and unique traits,” James Jean said in a video featured at the exhibit.

BTS transformed

In the exhibit, each BTS member is transformed into a visual metaphor that resonates with their personalities and public personas. “I discovered RM was a night owl, so I created a winged creature based on his night owl ideas. Jimin is known as the most ethereal, so I turned him into mushrooms called champignon. For j-hope, the sunshine of the group, I turned him into the sun god,” James Jean explained, detailing the thought process behind his artistic interpretations.

He elaborated on the other members, saying, “Jin is known as ‘Worldwide Handsome,’ and he refers to himself that way, but there is this old story of Narcissus turning into flowers. For V, I have him being surrounded by gemstones called Violane. For SUGA, known as ‘little meow meow,’ so I thought of putting him in happy beach scenes. Jungkook is known as ‘rabbit,’ so I have him surrounded by rabbits.” Each piece in the exhibit is a reflection of the members’ individual stories and the imagery they evoke, crafted with Jean’s signature blend of fantasy and reality.

The exhibit also portrays RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook as totems bursting with color. In a piece called “The Garden,” James Jean reimagines them as flower spirits. For that one, he drew inspiration from a line in the BTS song “The Truth Untold” that goes, “Bloomed in the garden of loneliness, a flower that resembles you.”

A chance to connect

Visitors can also view sketches and drafts of the pieces, providing insight into the artist’s creative process. For some ARMYs, the exhibit is a chance to connect with the South Koreans beyond their social media posts, records, performances, discography, and chart data. The exhibit also offers an exclusive look at BTS‘s assets, such as their awards and concert apparel.

“A lot of ARMYs have been waiting for this. We are so glad after so many years BTS is again here in the Philippines in some form,” said Kris Jacomina, a representative from Nice Entertainment. Nice Entertainment is the promoter responsible for bringing the exhibit to the Philippines.
