BTS Dance Trainer Fired by HYBE Over Massive Fraud Allegations

A dance trainer affiliated with HYBE, recognized for working with BTS, has been abruptly terminated amid allegations of fraud exceeding 5 billion KRW (approximately 3.9 million USD). In addition to the massive fraud allegations, the former HYBE employee is facing criminal charges for the deceit.

The individual, associated with HYBE’s label, BigHit Music, faced dismissal on November 20, following accusations of involvement in fraudulent activities totaling tens of billions of KRW, resulting in criminal charges. The allegations suggest that the dance trainer, posing as an investment opportunity, collected significant sums from victims but failed to return the funds, leading to their termination and legal consequences.

Since then, HYBE issued a statement about the former employee. “As soon as we became aware of our member’s misconduct and the damage it caused to the company, we promptly initiated an impartial investigation through an external law firm. After undergoing the dismissal process by the Disciplinary and Personnel Committee, we terminated the individual’s employment,” it read.

“This case involves the individual’s misconduct, which violated internal rules, regulations, and employment rules,” the statement continued. “We strictly prohibit members from exploiting internal information, positions, etc., for personal gain and engaging in illegal and unfair activities.”

“To prevent fraudulent actions, such as leveraging connections with the company or its artists for personal gain, and to mitigate the likelihood of future incidents, we are committed to offering external guidance on fraud prevention. Additionally, we will strengthen our governance system for ethics education and fair trade for all our members, taking substantial steps to enhance our internal control systems,” the statement added.

The incident has garnered widespread public attention due to the individual’s association with HYBE and their prominent role in the entertainment industry. For now, the agency has confirmed that they will proceed with proper legal procedures.

BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, who had been under suspicion of drug use, has tested negative for drugs in the detailed analysis of his hair sample conducted by the National Institute of Forensic Science. The results were reported to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Narcotics Unit. However, the analyses of both his fingernail and toenail samples are pending release.

On November 6, G-Dragon voluntarily visited the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Narcotics Unit, where he underwent a four-hour interrogation. During this process, the police conducted an initial reagent test, which yielded negative results. To conduct a more comprehensive analysis, urine and hair samples were collected and sent to the National Forensic Service. The preliminary drug test results came back negative on the same day, prompting the police to gather additional samples, including hair and fingernails, for a more detailed examination that took more time.

The negative results from the hair sample analysis provide a significant development in G-Dragon’s case, alleviating concerns about his alleged involvement in any drug-related activities. The pending analyses of his fingernail and toenail samples will likely provide further clarity on the situation. The BIGBANG singer’s cooperation with the authorities, including voluntarily submitting to testing, reflects a proactive approach to address the allegations and maintain transparency.

Earlier, there were reports raising suspicion about G-Dragon concealing evidence related to his potential drug use. He had been booked by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency last month on charges of illegal drug use, which his lawyers subsequently denied. Recently, G-Dragon voluntarily cooperated with investigations at the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Narcotics Unit and provided samples to the National Forensic Service for analysis.

She targeted an actor, and in the process of restraining her, Kyuhyun, who was present on-site, suffered a minor abrasion on his finger.

Responding to the reports, Kyuhyun’s agency, Antenna, provided an update, stating that the singer was promptly treated at the scene for the minor injury. The agency assured fans that Kyuhyun’s well-being is a priority, and he received immediate attention to address the situation.

“Kyuhyun suffered a minor abrasion on his finger and was treated immediately at the scene,” the statement read.

The Seoul Gangseo Police Station also swiftly took action, arresting the assailant on charges of special intimidation. The investigation is ongoing to ascertain the details surrounding the incident and the motive behind the attack.

Fans and well-wishers are expressing their concern for Kyuhyun’s safety and sending messages of support for his speedy recovery. The incident also highlights the challenges and unexpected situations that public figures may face, even in seemingly secure environments, emphasizing the importance of security measures and the need for a swift response to ensure the safety of individuals involved.

Look: HYBE’s ‘The Debut: Dream Academy’ Reveals Lineup for KATSEYE

A new global girl group is about to take the music industry by storm! Music giants HYBE and Geffen Records revealed the final six members of the highly-anticipated girl group KATSEYE during the conclusion of the talent reality show The Debut: Dream Academy. 

On Friday, November 17, the two-hour live finale held in Los Angeles, introduced the final six members: Daniela, Lara, and Megan from the United States; Yoonchae from South Korea; Sophia from the Philippines; and Manon from Switzerland. Collectively, the group will be known as KATSEYE.

In a press release, HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk expressed pride in their “unprecedented collaboration” with Geffen Records. “We are very proud of the results and of all the contestants who joined us in this project. We wish KATSEYE much success as we are sure they will inspire fans across the globe,” he added. 

Meet the KATSEYE members

For the finale, the Top 10 were divided into three groups, where they’re tasked to perform an exclusive song. Then, the final members were selected through a combination of early votes, real-time votes during the live finale, and evaluator’s scores. 

First to be revealed part of the lineup is 20-year-old Sophia Laforteza from the Philippines. Since she was three years old, she’s been singing and called it her “first love.” 

Next to be called  is Indian-American delegate from the United States, Lara Raj. According to Netflix, the 18-year-old contestant has previously appeared in a campaign for Michelle Obama’s Global Girls Alliance campaign. 

Then, Yoonchae Jeung, a 15-year-old candidate from South Korea, was announced to be part of the lineup. She’s followed by 17-year-old Megan Skiendell from the United States. 

Rounding up the group are Daniela Avanzini, a 19-year-old from the United States, and Manon Bannerman, a 21-year-old from Switzerland, who were called to be the fifth and sixth members of KATSEYE. 

 Given their diverse experiences and cultural backgrounds, each member is expected to bring a unique set of skills and perspectives to KATSEYE. 

What’s next after ‘The Debut: Dream Academy’ 

In September, South Korean entertainment company HYBE and American record label Geffen Records, launched The Debut: Dream Academy to search for their next global girl group.  Only 20 girls from different countries were selected over 120,000 applications to participate in the show. 

Over a course of 12 weeks, the participants took on several missions where they were narrowed down to 10 finalists.  The three songs from the finale, namely “Dirty Water,” “Girls Don’t Like,” and “All the Same,” can now be enjoyed on YouTube.

 

Now, KATSEYE is set to commence work on their upcoming debut album, which is scheduled for release in 2024. 

Apart from their debut track, a Netflix documentary series about the group’s journey is also slated for 2024. Said docuseries will be directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, and is jointly produced by HYBE, Interscope Films, and Boardwalk Pictures.

ITZY’s Lia to Continue Hiatus Through New Album and World Tour

Lia of K-pop girl group ITZY will be extending her hiatus into next year, confirming her absence in the group’s upcoming album release and world tour. 

On Friday, November 17, JYP Entertainment updated fans on Lia‘s condition after she took a break in September due to heightened anxiety levels.

“Currently, Lia is experiencing tension and symptoms of anxiety when carrying out scheduled activities. She was diagnosed with anxiety disorder as a result of examination from a specialized medical institution, and she is currently focusing on treatment,” the agency said, as translated by Soompi. 

With this, JYP Entertainment shared that they’ve decided to have Lia step back from participating in the production of ITZY’s new album, which is slated for a January 2024 release, as well as the group’s upcoming world tour so she could focus on her recovery.

Moreover, the agency explained that this development was made after a thorough discussion with Lia and the rest of the ITZY members. 

Meanwhile, Lia also took to Instagram to share a handwritten letter to their fans. In her message, the idol promised to return healthier and more improved. Additionally, she said that she’s aiming to repay the support that she received from their fans, MIDZY, during this challenging time. 

Get well soon, Lia! 

Despite the sad news, the ITZY member still found a way to comfort her fans as she released her solo track “Blossom.” According to JYP Entertainment, the song will be included in the group’s upcoming album. As of writing, other details about ITZY’s upcoming album have yet to be announced. 

Following the news, many fans also took to social media platforms to send their well-wishes for Lia. Especially since this isn’t the first time for the idol to sit out group activities due to her condition. 

To recall, she was unable to join ITZY on stage at the World Scout Jamboree “K-pop Super Live” stage in August. However, it was only in September when JYP Entertainment officially announced that Lia will be taking a break. At the time, the agency said she’s experiencing “extreme tension and anxiety about carrying out her scheduled activities.”

With her condition, fans are asking JYP Entertainment to make sure that Lia’s health will be prioritized.

AMPERS&ONE Marks Debut With Single ‘On And On’

AMPERS&ONE, the latest addition to FNC Entertainment‘s roster, has officially stepped into the K-pop limelight with the single album AMPERSAND ONE. The group, comprising Kamden, Brian, Jiho, Siyoon, Kyrell, Mackiah, and Seungmo, made their grand debut at a showcase held at the Blue Square MasterCard Hall.

“This is our first-ever performance on stage and we hope to get the chance to perform on diverse stages from now on,” said Kamden after performing. He, Jiho, and Brian rose to fame through Mnet’s Boys Planet, which ended in April.

“I spent four years as a trainee, and my parents and I had decided that it would be time for me to look for something else to do when I become 20 years old. I participated in Mnet’s survival program considering it my last chance. Even though I didn’t get to be one of the finalists, I was able to join this new team and debut after the show,” said Jiho, the leader of the group.

AMPERS&ONE aims to connect

Their debut single album has three tracks, led by the title track “On And On.” Siyoon described the song as an anthem of determination, reflecting the group’s journey towards achieving their dreams. Kamden contributed to the songwriting, adding a personal touch to their music. 

 “It was an honor to participate in writing the lyrics to the lead track of our debut album. I hope to continue taking part in composing and writing the lyrics to our future releases,” said Kamden. “We named the highlight dance move for this track ‘Wavy Dance.’ It’s when we spread our arms and make a wave and at the same time shuffle our feet.”

AMPERS&ONE aims to connect deeply with their audience through music that radiates positive energy and relatability. “I think our forte is that we can seem like close friends to fans by singing songs that they can easily relate to. Our group also consists of members from diverse cultural backgrounds so we can present diverse colors,” said Siyun.

NCT DREAM and JVKE Release Remix of ‘Broken Melodies’

K-pop sensation NCT DREAM has joined forces with American singer-songwriter JVKE for a refreshing remix of their hit track “Broken Melodies.”

On Friday, November 17,  the highly-anticipated collaboration was released, treating fans with new English lyrics and a new verse by JVKE.  

A part of JVKE’s verse goes: “But when reality sinks in deep, I can’t breathe like I’m stuck in a dream where my mind is awake but my body’s asleep.” Moreover, JVKE, who’s known for his breakout hit “golden hour” brought a sweet and enchanting touch to the remix. 

However, what really surprised fans was that the whole first verse and pre-chorus are now fully in English. In the original version, it was mainly in Korean. 

Following the release, fans of both artists couldn’t help but appreciate the remix. Many complimented how NCT DREAM’s signature sound blended seamlessly with JVKE’s distinctive touch. 

Even the American singer-songwriter was satisfied with how the remix turned out. In the comments section on the official YouTube video, JVKE left a comment that read: “Thankful to be part of this.” 

Furthermore, it also appeared that member Rejun is also delighted with the collaboration as he released a cover of JVKE’s viral hit “golden hour.” After the K-pop star released his cover on Wednesday, November 15, his fans quickly applauded him for the gorgeous cover, saying that the song suits his voice. In fact, many of them also requested that Renjun release more covers in the future. 

More collaboration for NCT DREAM? 

Although unexpected, JVKE’s  participation in the remix of “Broken Melodies” not only reflects the global reach of K-pop but also underscores the collaborative nature of the music industry.

Initially, “Broken Melodies” originally served as the lead single of NCT DREAM’s latest album ISTJ. Said album achieved immense success, having debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking the group’s highest ranking to date. As it already marked a significant milestone for the group, the remix can potentially contribute to the album’s ongoing success. 

With this, fans of the group couldn’t help but hope for the group to collaborate with international artists more. As this could not only give NCT DREAM the experience of working with diverse talents and widening their musical boundaries, but it could also tap more audiences and potential fans. 

As NCT DREAM continues to make waves globally, the group is scheduled to perform at the prestigious US  music festival iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour, starting in Boston on December 10.

Super Junior’s Kyuhyun Reveals New Fan Club Name, Logo

Kyuhyun of K-pop powerhouse Super Junior has reached a significant milestone in his career by unveiling a fresh fan club name and logo following his recent affiliation with his new agency, Antenna. 

On Wednesday, November 15, the artist revealed that his newly christened fan club will be named “KYUpiter.” Furthermore, the name drew inspiration from the majestic Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. 

According to the explanation, the choice symbolizes Kyuhyun’s “radiant presence as a multi-talented artist, whether as a ballad singer, K-pop group member, musical actor, or entertainer.” 

Moreover, the name also serves as a reminder of the special bond between the artist and the fans. As the agency urged fans to continue safeguarding Kyuhyun, much like how “Jupiter safeguards the Solar System from asteroids.” 

Alongside the fan club revelation is a distinctive artist logo that features a vintage, stamped texture. Notably, the design aims to reflect the depth of Kyuhyun’s musical prowess. “Please remember this special bond between the artist and fans whenever you say ‘Kyupiter,’” the staff added. 

An eventful 2023 for Kyuhyun 

These developments  came after the artist moved to another agency. 

In August, Kyuhyun inked a deal with his new agency, Antenna, marking a significant change in his career. At the time, the agency expressed its commitment to actively support the artist’s  diverse range of activities. Additionally, Antenna also urged fans to extend their love and support to the artist as he embarks on this fresh start.

Founded by singer-songwriter Yoo Hee Yeol, Antenna serves as the home for a diverse array of artists. Among their roster of artists include Lee Hyori, Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Sang Soon, Kwon Jin Ah, Mijoo, and more

Prior to moving to Antenna, Kyuhyun, who made his debut as a member of Super Junior in 2006, departed from SM Entertainment in July, concluding a 17-year association with the company. Notably, fellow Super Junior members Donghae and Eunhyuk also parted ways with SM Entertainment. Despite these changes, Donghae, Eunhyuk, and Kyuhyun have affirmed their commitment to continuing promoting as members of Super Junior.

As a solo artist, Kyuhyun, released his solo debut mini-album At Gwanghwamun in 2016. 

Beyond his music endeavors, he has showcased his talents in various musicals and as a host on variety programs.

YG Entertainment Provides Latest Update on Blackpink’s Contract Renewals

The K-pop community has been abuzz with speculation regarding the ongoing negotiations between BLACKPINK and YG Entertainment. In a recent development, YG Entertainment issued a statement that left BLINKs worried. According to Sports Chosun, the agency said, “We are negotiating with the artists regarding their exclusive contracts. The final outcome will be revealed through the document regarding major management issues related to investments.”

This update comes amidst changes within YG Entertainment. Fans noticed that Lisa‘s manager Alice Kang updated her LinkedIn profile to indicate her departure from the agency in October. This move sparked speculation about Lisa leaving the agency too, especially after the suspension of her Weibo account due to regulatory violations.

Similarly, Jennie‘s manager Alison Chang,has also left YG Entertainment. Adding to the intrigue, she recently attended the pre-opening of TAMBURINS’ pop-up store in Korea, accompanied by her former managers from YG Entertainment, Hosup and Jaemin. This occurrence led netizens to speculate about Jennie‘s status with the agency. Amidst these discussions, Jennie has taken steps to trademark her name “Jennie Ruby Jane” with the Korea Intellectual Property Rights in different categories earlier this year.

BLACKPINK announces VR concert

Meanwhile, BLACKPINK has announced their first virtual concert titled BLACKPINK: A VR Encore in collaboration with Meta and The Diamond Bros. This concert will present the final show of their Born Pink World Tour at Gocheok Sky Dome in a new, immersive virtual reality format. The group expressed their excitement about using VR to connect with a broader global audience and extend their tour experience.
