BTS’s RM’s Sister Opens ‘Cafe Far Ben’ in Seoul’s Seongsu District

Kim Kyung Min, the younger sister of BTS’s RM, has opened a café in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. The new establishment, named Cafe Far Ben, opened its doors on July 1. It occupies a strategic location on the trendy district’s main street, near major office buildings and the well-known 1MILLION Dance Studio, making it well-positioned to attract plenty of visitors from foot traffic.

Spotted at the opening was Jung Ji Woo, the sister of BTS’s j-hope. Not only did she graciously interact with fans who asked her for photos, but she also brought RM’s sister a bouquet of flowers to congratulate her on the opening. Jimin’s father, who runs the wildly popular MAGNATE café in Busan, sent flowers to Cafe Far Ben as well.

Although RM is currently serving in the South Korean military, where he’s playing saxophone in the band, he took time out from his service to congratulate his sister. He sent her a wreath with a note that said, “Dongsaeng! Cheers to new beginnings!”

What’s so good about Cafe Far Ben?

This marks the first time a BTS member’s relative has opened a café in Seoul. Jin’s older brother runs a business of his own in Yeouido-dong, Seoul, but it’s a Japanese restaurant named Ossu Seiromushi, not a café. (By the way, he also sent flowers to Kim Kyung Min when Cafe Far Ben opened.)

Since it opened, RM’s sister’s new café has been earning rave reviews from ARMYs and locals alike. Some say Cafe Far Ben’s strong points are its ambience, which is complemented by a great selection of music, and its high-quality coffee. Such feedback is likely to attract even more visitors in the future—visitors who will tuck into the café’s signature menu item called Far Ben Chio, a sweet coffee topped with savory peanuts.

To visit Cafe Far Ben, head to Seongsu station on Seoul’s green line (Line 2), take exit 3, turn right, and follow the main street to the café. The address is 1st Floor, Hyupseong Building, 65 Seongsui-ro, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. – K-Pop News Writer

BTS’s Jimin, Jungkook, RM, and V Reportedly Earn Military Promotion

On February 29, 2024, fans learned that BTS members Jimin, Jungkook, RM, and V earned promotions to Private First Class in the South Korean military. X (formerly Twitter) user @jaya20dec broke the news in a now-viral post. It highlights the significant progress the four have made since their enlistment in December 2023.

RM and V underwent basic training at the Nonsan Training Center, where they were recognized as elite soldiers of their graduating batch. RM was assigned to the 15th Infantry Division in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do, and is currently playing the saxophone in the military band. Meanwhile, after an additional three-week stint at the Army General Administration School, V was assigned to the “Ssangyong Unit” in the 2nd Corps of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army, which falls under the Ground Operations Command.

BTS’s Jimin and Jungkook enlisted together under the buddy system (“동반입대” or dongbanipdae). Initially, both went to the 5th Infantry Division, where fellow BTS member Jin is serving. But after a more detailed second classification, Jimin and Jungkook were reassigned to an artillery battalion.

From ‘ideungbyeon’ to ‘ildeungbyeong’

After completing almost three months in their respective units, the BTS members were promoted to Private First Class (“일등병” or ildeungbyeong) from Private (“이등병” or ideungbyeong). In the South Korean military, supervisors can request the promotion of recruits to Private First Class within one year of their enlistment. For the BTS members, their promotions took effect on March 1, 2024.

The South Korean military is a comprehensive and structured organization with a clear hierarchy. This hierarchy divides ranks into several groups, including commissioned officers, enlisted personnel, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and warrant officers. Each has specific roles, responsibilities, and promotion criteria.

Progression typically starts from Private and advances through ranks such as Private First Class, Corporal (“상등병” or sangdeungbyeong), and Sergeant (“병장” or byeongjang). Promotions are based on factors like time in service, performance, and passing specific tests. But the exact criteria can vary by military branch and its needs. The military emphasizes continuous training and development programs to prepare personnel for increased responsibilities.

About the Army Band

South Korea has several military bands, each linked to a different branch of the South Korean Armed Forces, such as the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy. Each branch has its own central band, along with additional regional bands and specialized ensembles within the military’s music departments.

These bands participate in international military music festivals and perform at military functions, national ceremonies, and official events. The red uniform, exclusive to band members, distinguishes them from other military personnel. Performing in the Army Band allows service members to use their talents while serving the country.

To join a military band in South Korea, individuals must audition. Applicants typically need a background in music, which might include formal education or performance experience. RM, with his background as the leader of BTS, certainly fits the bill. During the audition, would-be band members must prove they’re exceptionally skilled in playing an instrument or singing. Their suitability for military service might also be evaluated. Successful candidates then undergo basic military training before being assigned to the band.

On the 11th, he reached out via Weverse, inquiring about ARMYs’ well-being and talking about how he’s adjusting to military life. He wrote, “Are ARMYs doing well?” He continued, “I’ve also arrived at my unit and am adapting well. I ate rice cake soup for the Lunar New Year. RM’s Military Graduation Speech Ignites Discussion

At their recent military graduation, BTS’s RM and V were recognized as two of six elite trainees out of two hundred recruits. During the ceremony, RM delivered a speech via a pre-recorded video message. The speech delved into his experiences and reflections on his military service. It has since gone viral, sparking a wide range of reactions.

Many media outlets reported positively on the speech, stating that RM reportedly volunteered to deliver it. However, the response among ARMYs—BTS’s loyal fans—was divided. On one hand, some were skeptical about its authenticity. They suspected that RM might have been coerced into filming the video. Certain statements RM made in it appeared to contradict aspects of what he’s known to believe in, such as activism and free will. They alleged the speech was South Korean government propaganda aimed at motivating young men to be enthusiastic about military service.

On the other hand, some fans believed that the content sounded authentic to RM. They interpreted the speech as his genuine effort to encourage and support his fellow trainees. Additionally, a third group of fans criticized the public discourse surrounding the speech. They argued that it wasn’t intended for a wider audience and shouldn’t be subjected to external analysis or debate.

The controversy also led to criticism of keyboard warriors, particularly those not from South Korea, for their remarks on the country’s political situation and military policies.

RM military graduation ceremony speech

What did RM say in his speech?

Here’s the full speech, with minor edits for clarity:

“It’s true that I postponed my enlistment for a long time. Because I entered the military at a fairly old age, I was afraid and worried about many things. Also, because I enlisted late, most of my colleagues in the dorm I lived in were fellow trainees about 10 years younger than me.

“Through mental strength education, I realized the necessity of the military and the need for basic military training in Korea, a divided and armistice country. I had experiences I wouldn’t have had if it hadn’t been for the Army Training Center. In particular, the night march I completed a few days ago was the most memorable.

“As I marched with my colleagues all night and looked at the stars and cheered together during difficult times, I was able to feel the kind of camaraderie I had only heard about. Thanks to the great executives and squad leaders, I was able to complete many training sessions that were very unfamiliar to me in a rewarding and fun way.

“Lastly, I would like to say that although it would be ideal to live in a world where everyone doesn’t need to learn marksmanship, the peace that has been enjoyed in Korea for over 70 years couldn’t have been possible without the noble sacrifice, effort, and dedication of many people. We’ll do our best to carry out our mission.”

Despite the controversy, many agreed that RM’s speech highlighted his exceptional public speaking skills. It reminded fans of what he truly excels at—performing for sold-out crowds. This has only heightened the anticipation for his return to music in 2025 with BTS. – K-Pop News Writer
