Newjeans’ ‘Super Shy’ Tops Song of the Summer in TikTok Korea

Short video platform TikTok announced on Friday, August 25, that “Super Shy” of rookie girl group NewJeans is the hottest summer song in South Korea for 2023.

In a press release, TikTok explained that their list of “Song of the Summer” is based on the total number of videos of audio sources from the collected data in the platform between June to August of this year. The list is also divided into a global list and national list.

For the Top 10 in South Korea, it was NewJeans’s “Super Shythat emerged to have generated the most music-based content.

Super Shy,” which was released on July 7, is one of the title tracks from the group’s sophomore EP Get Up.

Additionally, Get Up, which featured a total of six songs, saw NewJeans topping the Billboard 200 chart for the first time. Moreover, they’re the only second female K-pop act to land on the top spot of the Billboard 200, following BLACKPINK. Also, NewJeans’ Get Up and BLACKPINK’s Born Pink album are the only two albums by an all-female act to hit the No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the past 15 years.

It’s not a surprise then that a single from NewJeans topped the list of TikTok Korea.

Aside from Super Shy,” only four other songs from Korean acts made it to the list.

Placing third in the list is Queencard” by girl group (G)I-DLE. The song was the title track for their sixth mini-album I FEEL, which was released in May.

Next is the speed up version of the hit “Cupid” by FIFTY FIFTY. Released on February 24, the song went viral and eventually became the highest charting hit by a South Korean girl group in the history of the Billboard Pop Airplay chart.

Although it placed fifth in TikTok Korea’s list, it was fourth in the global list. Additionally, “Cupid” was the only song by a K-pop act that made it in the list.

In ninth place is Seven” by BTS member Jungkook. Also an expected addition given that the explicit version of the digital single has earned a Guinness World Record

“Seven (Explicit Ver.)” logged at least 11.6 million streams each day for its first tracking week. With this, it has set the record for fastest time for a music track by a male artist to reach 100 million streams on Spotify.

Rounding up the list was AEAO” by Korean hip-hop duo Dynamic Duo. The song went viral on TikTok nine years after its release.

As for the international releases that made it to the list, Mae Stephens’ “If We Ever Broke Up” landed at the second place.

Other songs in the rankings also include “What It Is (Solo Version)” by American rapper Doechii and “girls like me don’t cry” by Vietnamese-American singer Thuy.

Japanese group Yoasabi’s “Idol” and singer imase’s “Night Dancer” also made it to the list.

The statement was released by BIGHIT Music shortly after Sports Chosun reported about Jungkook’s upcoming solo. In the initial report, it was indicated that the BTS singer will release his solo album on July 14, 2023.

The report also revealed that the solo album will feature an English-language B-side track. Moreover, they reported that Jungkook will have global solo activities to promote the album.

Although BIGHIT Music did not confirm that Jungkook’s solo album will be dropping next month, the agency made it clear that the BTS member is planning something. With that in mind, ARMYs are already looking forward to an official announcement from the company.

Jungkook recently made headlines after opening up about his military enlistment in the future. The “Euphoria” singer confirmed he will eventually enlist. However, he plans to make sure his fans get used to his shorter haircut without them even noticing.

“Rather than cutting all my hair suddenly, I will gradually cut it shorter and shorter,” Jungkook said. “It’s called hair-lighting,” Jungkook said, making a play on words from “gaslighting”.

“I will keep cutting my hair shorter until you guys all of a sudden ask, ‘What, when did his hair become so short?’ ‘When did he buzz his hair?’ And so I will make it so that (my short haircut) feels natural,” he added.

BTS’ Jungkook Reveals Interesting Plan Before Military Enlistment

Jungkook is opening up about his impending mandatory military enlistment. The BTS maknae confirmed that he is already thinking about enlisting for military service. In preparation for his enlistment, Jeon Jung-kook revealed his plan that will ease ARMYs into the idea.

Jungkook Discusses Future Military Enlistment

On May 25, Jungkook held a live stream to interact with his fans. During the broadcast, an ARMY commented, “The military loves you.” The “Euphoria” singer agreed, saying, “It’s true.”

Once military was mentioned, Jungkook immediately remembered his fellow BTS members who have enlisted. He pointed out that J-Hope has finally graduated after several weeks of basic training and shared a photo with the idols. The “My Time” vocalist then admitted that Jung Hoseok has grown so much during his training.

“Our Hope hyung recently had a ceremony for completing training,” Jung-kook said. “Hope hyung uploaded a selfie on our group chat, and his eyes became very manly.”

Jungkook then stated that he will also need to fulfill his military obligations in the future. However, he assured ARMYs that he would return in a cool manner.

“Ah, I have to go (to the military), too, though,” he said. “I’ll go and return cooly.”

Jung Kook then shared how he intends to ease fans into the idea of his military enlistment. According to the “Dreamers” singer, he will not cut his hair suddenly. Instead, he plans to cut it shorter gradually until ARMYs get used to the shorter look.

“Rather than cutting all my hair suddenly, I will gradually cut it shorter and shorter,” Jungkook said. “It’s called hair-lighting,” he added, making a play on words from “gaslighting”.

“I will keep cutting my hair shorter until you guys all of a sudden ask, ‘What, when did his hair become so short?’ ‘When did he buzz his hair?’ And so I will make it so that (my short haircut) feels natural,” Jungkook said.

It’s a thoughtful idea that ARMYs immediately appreciated. Fans were grateful that Jungkook is always thinking about how his supporters will feel about his military enlistment.

For now, BIGHIT MUSIC has not yet made an announcement about Jungkook’s mandatory military enlistment. In the meantime, Jin and J-Hope are the two BTS members who are serving their country.

BTS’ Jungkook Warns Sasaengs To Stop Sending Food To His House

Jungkook has had enough of sasaengs. The BTS member issued a warning to “fans” who have been making food deliveries to his house. Jeon Jungkook made it clear that he is ready to take legal action against people sending food to his private address.

What Are ‘Sasaengs’?

Sasaengs are “fans” of celebrities who resort to stalking in an effort to be close to their idols. These people (mostly illegally) obtain private information like the idol’s phone number, address, and schedule. They then use the information to make contact with the idol, like visiting them or sending food to their home.

Jungkook Urges People To Stop Sending Food To His House Or Face Legal Action

This is exactly what has been happening to Jungkook. On May 4, the BTS maknae posted an update on the fan community Weverse to issue a warning to sasaengs.

The “Dreamers” singer revealed that some people have been sending food to his house. He told them to stop doing this or else he will take legal action against them.

Do not send food delivery to my house,” Jungkook wrote. “I will not eat it even if you send it.”

“While I am thankful for the thought, I eat well, so buy it for yourself,” he continued. “I ask of you. If you send it one more time, I will look up the receipt order number and take action. So please stop.”

It is unclear how the sasaengs obtained Jungkook’s address but the thought that they have the information is unsettling. With that in mind, it is understandable why he is ready to take legal action just to ensure his own safety.

In related news, Jungkook was once again praised by Gianni Infantino. The FIFA president reminisced about the 2023 FIFA World Cup and called Jungkook’s performance “the best opening ceremony.”
