‘The Glory’ Star Park Jia Passes Away at 52

Actress Park Jia has sadly passed away at the age of 52. The star of “The Glory” has been battling cerebral infarction before her passing.

On the morning of September 30, a media outlet reported the news, citing a close acquaintance of the actress. The acquaintance revealed that Park Jia had recently collapsed due to a cerebral infarction, a type of stroke caused by the blockage of blood flow to the brain. Despite battling her condition in the hospital, she unfortunately did not recover and passed away.

Later that day, her agency BILLIONS confirmed her passing through an official statement. The loss of the beloved actress has left many in the entertainment industry and her fans mourning.

“We are deeply saddened to deliver this heartbreaking and unfortunate news,” the statement started. “Park Jia passed away today (September 30) at 2:50 a.m. KST after battling a cerebral infarction. She was 52 years old.”

“The funeral hall for the deceased has been set up in Room 2 at Asan Medical Center. The funeral procession is scheduled for 10 a.m. KST on October 2,” it added. “BILLIONS will forever remember the passion for acting that the deceased cherished until the very end. Once again, we express our deepest condolences on her passing and sincerely wish for her to rest in peace.”

Park Jia had a remarkable career in film and television, known for her versatile roles and strong performances. She appeared in various notable works such as “Epitaph”, “Masquerade”, “Girl on the Edge”, “The Doctors”, “The Good Wife”, “The Rebel”, “Cleaning Up”, and “Bloody Heart”. In 2022, she gained attention for her role in the hit Netflix series “The Glory”, where she played Jung Mihee, the mother of the main character Dong-eun, whose complicated and heartbreaking relationship with her daughter left a lasting impact on viewers.

Her passing is a significant loss to the Korean entertainment industry.

Song Hye Kyo Talks About “The Glory” and New Film “Dark Nuns”

Song Hye Kyo graces the cover of Elle Korea’s September issue, where she opened up about her journey through The Glory and her excitement for her next project, Dark Nuns. Reflecting on her role in the hit drama, she shared, “Since it was a genre I hadn’t tried before, I had a lot of worries and fears. But fortunately, it received a lot of love, and I had fun.”

She mentioned that she specifically wanted to avoid another romantic role post-The Glory, making Dark Nuns an ideal choice.

The actress found the experience refreshing, noting that watching herself in action scenes on the monitor was thrilling. Song Hye Kyo expressed excitement about revealing a different side of herself through this daring role.

Song Hye Kyo Reveals ‘The Glory’ Brought Back Her Love for Acting

Renowned South Korean actress Song Hye Kyo opened up about experiencing career burnout. Thankfully, the hit revenge series The Glory has helped bring back her love for craft.

In an interview with the news outlet Sports Chosun, Hye Kyo mentioned that prior to her appearance in the drama, she reached a point where she got tired of doing the same roles that she did not enjoy the craft anymore.

 

“Acting was always fun, challenging, and difficult… But at some point, I felt a bit tired because I wasn’t doing various productions,” the actress shared.

Additionally, Hye Kyo also shared her belief that people’s perception towards her acting has changed since her role in The Glory.

“I was always shown the same way. And I thought people would think I’m boring because even I felt like I was boring,” she disclosed. However, this changed after taking part in the thriller drama.

In the critically-acclaimed series, Hye Kyo played the role of Moon Dong-Eun, a school violence victim who meticulously plotted her vengeance towards her perpetrators.

Despite the challenging role, Hye Kyo bagged the Grand Prize at the 2nd Blue Dragon Series Awards for her outstanding performance.

Actress Song Hye Kyo throughout the years

In 1996, the then-14-year-old Song Hye Kyo entered the world of entertainment as she won a modeling contest. In the same year, Hye Kyo made her acting debut with a small role in the drama First Love.

Four years later, the actress rose to fame when she starred as the lead actress in the popular drama series Autumn in My Heart.

Since then, her career continued to prosper thanks to her appearance in numerous television dramas and films. Some of her notable works include My Girl and I in 2005, Hwang Jin Yi in 2007, and The Grandmaster in 2013. There, she worked with esteemed Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai.

Marking her 20th year in the industry in 2016, the actress made a triumphant TV comeback with the hit drama Descendants of the Sun. Said drama bagged the Grand Prize in the prestigious Baek Sang TV Awards ceremony, while Hye Kyo took home the Most Popular Actress award.

Ultimately, the success of The Glory also opened up more opportunities for the veteran actress. “The roles I received afterwards have become more diverse than before,” she said.

With the abundant offers coming her way, the actress expressed her desire to try on genres she hasn’t done yet in the past. “I want to try horror, thriller, and I also want to play a villain role,” she said, “Comedy is good. I want to appear in a rom-com too.” Hye Kyo added.

Song Hye Kyo Wins Daesang at the 2023 Blue Dragon Series Awards

South Korean actress Song Hye Kyo won the Grand Prize at the 2023 Blue Dragon Series Awards held at Incheon Paradise City on Wednesday, July 19. 

Song was recognized for her portrayal as Moon Dong-eun in the hit Netflix series The Glory. 

“I can’t believe I’d receive this award. I want to praise myself for the first time. Good job, Hye Kyo,” she said in her acceptance speech. 

 

This served as her third Daesang (Grand Prize) in her acting career. Her previous Daesang were from the 2013 series That Winter, The Wind Blows and the 2016 series Descendants of the Sun. 

Meanwhile, Ha Jung Woo of Narco-Saints and Anna’s Bae Suzy won the Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. 

The Disney+ series Big Bet won the Best Drama award, beating nominees The Glory, Narco-Saints, Weak Hero Class 1, and Bargain. 

The rest of the winners in the drama category are: 

  • Best Supporting Actor: Lee Dong Hwi, Big Bet 
  • Best Supporting Actress: Lim Ji Yeon, The Glory 
  • Best Rookie Actor: Park Ji Hoon, Weak Hero Class 1
  • Best Rookie Actress: Shin Ye Eun, Revenge of Others 
  • OST Popularity Award: Jaechan of DKZ, Our Season 
  • Why Not Award: Choi Hyun Wook, Weak Hero Class 1

For the variety category, Siren: Survive the Island took home the Best Variety Program award. 

Yoo Jae Suk was named Best Male Entertainer for his show PLAYou Level Up, while Joo Hyung Young of  SNL Korea was named Best Female Entertainer. 

The 2023 ceremony marked the second edition of the Blue Dragon Series Awards. This year, the award-giving body added new awards: a Daesang (grand prize), OST Popularity Award, and Why Not Award. 

Blue Dragon Series Awards honors the excellent individuals and projects produced by streaming services.

Song Hye Kyo Channels Moon Dong Eun In Epic Baeksang Awards Acceptance Speech

Song Hye Kyo proved once again that she has the best sense of humor. The star of “The Glory” referenced her character Moon Dong Eun during her acceptance speech at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards.

The revenge drama “The Glory” is nominated for numerous categories at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards. The Netflix series took home most of the awards including Best Drama and Best Supporting Actress for Lim Ji Yeon.

When Song Hye Kyo was announced Best Actress for her performance in the show, she gave a memorable acceptance speech. Instead of accepting as herself, Song channeled her character Moon Dong Eun and gave Lim Ji Yeon’s character a shoutout.

I received an award, Yeon Jin,” Song said, making the audience explode in laughter. As they applauded, the “Encounter” actress added, “I am very excited right now.”

Although she opened her acceptance speech with a joke, Song Hye Kyo was moved by her victory.

“I wanted to say that one last time. I really wanted this award. Thank you for giving it to me,” she said. Song then proceeded to thank the entire production team and cast members who worked on the drama.

Song Hye Kyo isn’t the only star who gave an interesting acceptance speech at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards. Jinyoung, who was given the TikTok Popularity Award with IU, teased his future plans with his group GOT7 after completing military service.

“As I received such a huge award, I will come back healthily after the military service and will greet you again with great works, also with GOT7’s album and my solo album. Thank you,” Jinyoung said.

Park Jinyoung also won the Best New Actor award for his performance in “Christmas Carol”.

“The Glory” is still streaming on Netflix.
