Joy Goes Dating, ReVeLuvs Rejoice

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve most probably heard the news that Red Velvet’s representative actress and “face of the group”, Joy, has R&B singer Crush. What’s fantastic about this was that once rumors started circulating that the two former collaborators have explored the possibility of furthering their relationship, their agencies, SM Entertainment and PNation wasted no time in confirming the news. And much to the surprise of Korean entertainment onlookers, the public response has been positive!

What? No saesangs threatening to set SM Entertainment on fire? No petitions to the Blue House for the removal of Joy from RV? Are ReVeLuvs gunning for the Nobel prize for most matured fandom? The degree of acceptance and even love for the newly dating couple is something not a lot of us are used to, or even have experienced in the past.

Thus, this begs the question, why are the fans manifesting a great deal of calm and even approval to Joy and Crush? Of course, K-netz have a gazillion opinions ranging from logical hot takes to grand “Next Level by aespa” theories. Let’s check out the more outstanding ones:

1. Crush is not an idol.

When an idol dates another idol, two fandoms usually go to war with each other – the fandom of the boy group who has a lot of displaced anger at both their oppa who is “abandoning” them by prioritizing this girl than them, his loyal supporters and the girl (and obviously, her fans) for taking away their oppa from them and the fandom of the girl group who will naturally defend their girl from haters. This is not happening in the case of Crush, who has mostly male fans, and Joy, whose fans won’t be up against overly possessive female fans. Now, if say, Joy transforms her reel relationship with her We Got Married “husband” BTOB’s Sungjae into a real one, ReVeLuvs and Melody might get into a full-blown confrontation. Also, this ties to point #2, which is…

2. Joy enjoys a balanced (i.e., equal number of female and male) fandom.
Because Joy has successfully dabbled in an acting career, she has widened the demographics of her fanbase. Now, it appears that she has a healthy male fanbase, a majority which are Red Velvet fans, as well as a growing number of female fans composed of 20-something women to ahjummas who have grown to like her in The Liar and His Lover and Tempted, and are anticipating Only One Person. Thus, despite constant criticism of Joy (or more precisely, her acting) being a wet blanket in the TV dramas she has starred in, most people (even the causal TV viewer) have identified her in different acting roles (and thus having different personalities) are not overly possessive when it comes to her. Maybe, if it was visual Irene getting caught in a dating “scandal”, then men might definitely react.

3. Crush started off as a Joy-stan.
The relationship did not just pop out of nowhere.

Joy and Crush first collaborated on a song called Mayday from his album homemade. Mayday became a moderate hit, chartering as high as #32 in the Gaon Digital Chart. Days after, both parties posted cute photos of them together on their social media accounts, which fans credited to them just promoting their song. A lot of people did notice that they looked nice cute good together. In behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, the two went on to gush about each other. Joy admitted to being a fan of the singer even before she was offered the project, while the R&B singer revealed that his Red Velvet collaborator has been his ideal type for some time.

And have you seen that music video for Mayday? Cutest. Thing. Ever. Thus, when dating rumors started swirling days ago, people somehow just had smiles on their faces upon hearing the speculations.

4. ReVeLuvs and K-pop fans welcome some good news.
In the midst of a fresh batch of depressing news, K-pop fans are faced with on their every waking day, from former EXO member Kris Wu’s woes to (G)-IDLE losing a member (or a forced resignation, perhaps?) because of a bullying scandal and NCT Lucas’ abuse rumors, k-pop followers are surely hankering for some feel-good developments. Thus, when it was revealed that Joy is dating Crush, her groupmates subjected her to some good-natured teasing and the PR Department of SM Entertainment surely celebrated this break from having to issue apology statements. Alas, with Wendy’s accident in 2019 and Irene’s attitude scandal last year, the successful Seulgi and Irene sub-unit (successfully launched just before the Irene scandal), solo releases of Wendy and Joy, and finally Joy’s rosy personal life may just be what ReVeLuvs need.

And it is on this note that we wish the new couple more happiness as they get to know each other more and for Red Velvet and the fandom to enjoy more good news in the months and years to come. Isn’t the contract renewal for the group coming up very soon? Stand by for further developments!

MONSTA X Posts Cryptic Tweet Teasing Next Comeback

MONSTA X is having a busy year.

The six-member boy group has been releasing new music and endorsing products since January. So are the idols now ready for their next project without their leader? MONSTA X has posted a cryptic tweet that teases the group’s latest project without Shownu.

In July, Shownu confirmed his enlistment into military duty. The MONSTA X leader revealed he will serve as a public service worker because of his medical history. Son Hyunwoo had eye surgery for a detached retina last year. The main dancer had also dislocated his shoulder in the past.

Shownu might be serving his country but he continues to be a part of MONSTA X’s ongoing promotions. Most of the current MONSTA X content, like the promotional single Kiss or Death, was recorded before his enlistment. However, the group could be working on their first project as a five-member band.

https://youtu.be/nPEmoaNCBNg

The official MONSTA X Twitter account is usually posting new photos of the idols or updates on their current promotion. However, a recent tweet proved to be different because it was written in English and seemed rather cryptic.

They say hindsight’s 20/20,” the tweet reads along with the eyes emoji and the MONSTA X hashtags. It doesn’t say much but Monbebes were mystified by the post.

Fans have many theories about the mysterious tweet. Some believed that it was a teaser for the next MONSTA X comeback before the end of the year. Others pointed out that it could be a new project that will look back on the group’s six-year career.

The expression “hindsight is 20/20” is attributed to humorist Richard Armour. It points out how something is easier to understand after it has happened. It is generally stated when someone realizes late how to act in a situation.

For now, MONSTA X has not yet clarified their cryptic tweet. However, Monbebes hope that if it is for a new project, it would still involve Shownu.

Jay B Releases First EP, Hints at Possible GOT7 Reunion

Lim Jaebeom’s solo career is officially taking off.

As of August 26, 2021, the leader of GOT7 has finally released his first mini-album SOMO: FUME. Not surprisingly, it’s filled with songs that are distinctly Jay B.

While JB is currently promoting the title track “B.T.W” and enjoying his status as a solo artist, he is also eager to work with Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom again. Jay B has confirmed that they are working to make a GOT7 reunion happen soon.

GOT7 has been working together since 2014 but the group hit an unusual milestone in early 2021. All members of the idol group decided against renewing their contracts with JYP Entertainment. The decision made Ahgases worry that it would mean the group’s disbandment. However, the boys made it clear that GOT7 is “Forever Seven” and will continue to perform together.

Since then, the GOT7 members have signed with different companies and worked on solo projects. Jay B was the last member to choose a new company and signed with Jay Park’s H1ghr Music. Jaebeom then made his mark as a solo artist with the digital single “Switch It Up.”

https://youtu.be/D-kjUANWM9c

It’s clear Jay B is having the time of his life writing new music on his own. While speaking to MTV, the other half of JJ Project admitted he loves the artistic freedom of a solo artist.

“The freedom that I feel is that my ideas, my creativity, and my direction do not get lost in translation and doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. It doesn’t get overridden by other people’s opinions,” Jay B elaborated. “Now, my creativity is becoming more of a reality. It’s not that I have the freedom to do whatever I want with my music—that’s not it. It’s just that my ideas are being more prioritized here, and I feel like you see that in my songs.”

Being a solo Korean R&B artist means new fans but Jay B also wants to please Ahgases with his current sound. Jus2’s second member assures GOT7 fans that he hasn’t changed at all.

“I want the fans to continue to see me and keep their love for me. Nothing’s going to change. Just look at me and take me for what I am and who I am. I’m still me,” he said.

https://youtu.be/cUAsTQUU3xk

Pleasing Ahgases means a GOT7 reunion. Jay B knows this and reveals that he and his fellow members are looking for ways to make it happen.

“I really want to let the fans know that every one of the seven members are trying extremely hard to continuously do good work and maintain the name of GOT7,” Jay B said. “Even today, we were talking and are still thinking of ways we can do something together so we can maintain the fandom and honor for GOT7. We’re always thinking of new ways to progress, but it’s challenging.”

Jay B, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom are all working on their own solo projects. However, fans can expect GOT7 to eventually work together again when the time is just right.

SOMO: FUME, Jay B’s first mini-album, is out now.

The Return of Seven K-pop Idols From Military Service in 2022

We know the drill: Fandoms cry, fandoms take to social media to express their undying deviation for their oppas, and alas, we see our beautiful men going bald or in crew cuts to fulfill their patriotic duty to the Republic of Korea by enlisting in the military.

And for some of us, the wait will be over soon, the first half of 2022, to be exact. Here are some idols who are scheduled to return to idol life in the first six months of next year:

Jinwoo (WINNER)
Discharge: Jan. 1, 2022

Winner’s oldest member enlisted on April 2, 2020, seven days before the group’s last album with all four members, Remember, was released. In August the previous year, Jinu made his solo debut with Jinu’s Heyday, a single album with the lead single Call Anytime, which topped various music charts, including the iTunes charts in 13 countries. The second placer on the 2015 list of male idols with perfect facial ratios is seen to continue solo activities upon his discharge, carrying on with his appearances on web series, variety shows, and even stage productions which he successfully conducted until his enlistment. Unfortunately, Mino and Yoon have yet to start their military service, so Inseos may have to wait until 2024 for WINNER to return as a complete foursome.

Ken (VIXX)
Discharge: Jan. 15, 2022

As the main vocalist of the group known as the Concept KingsKen has had a busy career both as a member of VIXX and as a solo artist before enlisting. He has acted on musical theater and television and successfully released an EP entitled Greeting in May 2020, two months before starting his military training. STARLIGHTS have zero doubts that their husky-voiced vocalist will have an abundance of work offers once he finishes his military duties as an active-duty soldier with the army’s music corps in a little over five months.

Zico (Block B)
Discharge: February 8, 2022

Block B leader, soloist rapper, and KOZ Music CEO Zico left us with a lot of songs to tide us through his absence before beginning his military conscription on July 30, 2020. He started that year with a bang, releasing the viral Any Song and its accompanying #AnySongChallenge on social media, which propelled it to the top of the charts. Weeks before he started serving as a public service worker, he released Random Box, an EP that included Summer Hate, featuring Rain, which peaked at #2 in Gaon charts. It is expected that he will release new music in February, still under his own label, which was acquired by HYBE Corporation (formerly BigHit Entertainment of BTS fame) late last year.

Chunji (Teen Top)
Discharge: February 9, 2022

Teen Top holds the distinction as the only band in K-pop history to have celebrated its 10th anniversary as a group last year without any of its members starting their military enlistment yet. That’s because all of the members were still in their teens (as their group’s name implies) when they debuted in 2010. Chunji was the first to enlist on August 8 last year and is set to end his military service in February next year. A return to musicals may be in store for the group’s visual in February, or maybe a sub-unit with Neil and Changjo, his group mates who have yet to enlist. Besides—with Chunji’s looks and charisma—an acting career shouldn’t be a long shot.

Suho and Chen (EXO)
Discharge: February 13, 2022 and late April to early May 2022

Suho and Chen are set to finish their military service in the first half of 2022: Suho is set to give EXOLs a Valentine’s treat as he is scheduled to be released on either February 12 or 13, while Chen is serving as an active-duty soldier until late April next year. Both missed their group’s Can’t Fight the Feeling comeback in 2020 and will surely make their presence felt in EXO’s 2022 releases. Both have debuted as solo artists, so they might have more solo releases next year. The group’s leader is also expected to accept more acting work while expecting the main vocal to do more OST work and, hopefully, introduce his family to the universe next year.

Seph (KARD)
Discharge: April 16, 2022

Seph is the only member of the co-ed group KARD who has to enlist in the military, considering groupmate BM is an American citizen. With the group’s international success, having already staged a US tour after their Korean debut in 2017, J. Seph and his three members are expected to continue with international promotions while simultaneously strengthening their activities locally to dispel criticism against the group involving them allegedly favoring their international audience more than their Korean public.

And that’s only for the first months of the year! We’ll surely update you of more idols slated to return to us from July to the -ber months of 2022, so stay tuned!

BTS Map of the Soul Tour Officially Cancelled By BigHit Music

Sad news for ARMYs who have been waiting for the next BTS concert: The cancellation of the BTS Map of the Soul world is now official, as of August 20, 2021 KST.

BigHit Music released a statement on WeVerse regarding the BTS Map of the Soul world tour, confirming that the company decided to cancel the tour after numerous delays.

Due to changing circumstances beyond our control, it has become difficult to resume performances at the same scale and timeline as previously planned. Therefore we must announce the cancellation of the BTS MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR,” the statement reads.

BigHit Music assured fans that those who purchased tickets will get a refund.

We regret that we must now inform you of the formal cancellation of the tour. For fans who have reserved tickets for the North American shows, you will receive an email from your original point of purchase regarding refunds,” the statement continues.

Along with BigHit Music’s formal apology is a promise that there is a new tour that is currently being planned in the future.

Once again, please allow us to offer our sincere apology to all fans who have waited for the BTS MAP OF THE SOUL TOUR to resume. We are working to prepare a viable schedule and performance format that can meet your expectations, and we will provide updated notices as soon as possible,” the statement concludes.

The BTS Map of the World tour cancellation may be heartbreaking, however, ARMYs also understand that safety is more important during this time. The cancellation will keep both BTS and their fans safe during the pandemic era.

The BTS Map of the Soul tour was set to be the group’s fourth worldwide concert tour. It was announced in January 2020 and scheduled to kick off in April of the same year. However, BTS canceled all four of the South Korea dates amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The group chose to merely postpone the North American dates.

The BTS Map of the Soul tour consists of 21 dates starting in the US with Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. It also includes shows in Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando, and Chicago. There were also four confirmed dates in Japan as well as two mystery dates believed to be set in Asia.

While it’s sad that BTS Map of the Soul is no longer moving forward, it also opens up several interesting possibilities in the future. If a new concert tour is being planned, that means that BTS is currently preparing for another album. With that in mind, ARMYs should keep an eye out for new updates.

The members of BTS have admitted that they are working on new music. Although the next comeback has not yet been announced, a full album could be released this year. The next album is expected to be accompanied by another world tour so stay tuned.

VMAs 2021: BTS, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, MONSTA X, TWICE, (G)I-DLE Nominated

2021 has been an interesting year for K-pop so far. The year saw artists embrace new concepts and release fresh music for their fans, so it’s no surprise that the nominees for Best Kpop at the Video Music Awards 2021 represent unique and different styles that made waves this year.

VMA 2021’s nominees for Best Kpop include (G)I-DLE for ‘DUMDi DUMDi’, BLACKPINK featuring Selena Gomez for ‘Ice Cream’, BTS for ‘Butter’, MONSTA X for ‘Gambler’, Twice for ‘Alcohol-Free’ and SEVENTEEN for ‘Ready To Love’. Each track deserves the nomination for the way they represent Kpop and the group that performs them.

Check out the nominees for Best K-pop at the upcoming VMAs 2021:

(G)I-DLE: DUMDi DUMDi

What’s the best follow-up to a dreamy track like Oh My God? The ladies of (G)I-DLE went with an undeniably catchy song that celebrates the beauty of youth in the summertime. Released in August 2020, DUMDi DUMDi is an irresistible earworm that makes your heart beat faster. The Western-inspired video features Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua bringing tropical fun even though they’re in the middle of nowhere.

BLACKPINK: Ice Cream (featuring Selena Gomez)

They say the best way to cool off during the summer is with some ice cream and BLACKPINK delivers the electropop version of the sweet treat. The MV, which was released in August 2020, features Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa prancing around in pastels. Even featured artist Selena Gomez can’t resist the taste of ice cream!

Fun fact: Ice Cream is mostly in English except for Lisa’s Korean rap verse. This makes it easier for international Blinks to sing along.

BTS: Butter

Who would have thought that a song titled Butter would be a catchy dance track? BTS’s second English-language single doesn’t disappoint with its fun yet grown-up flair. The Butter MV was released in May 2021 and it teases RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook looking hot in suits.

BTS’s Butter also earned nominations for three other categories: Best Pop, Best Editing (for Lumpens’ Yong Seok Choi), and Best Choreography (for Son Sung Deuk with BHM Performance Directing Team). Additionally, it isn’t the only BTS song nominated at the VMAs! (More below!)

MONSTA X: Gambler

MONSTA X is known for their darker, more serious music compared to other K-pop groups. This is proven again with Gambler, the new song they dropped in early June 2021. Penned by member Joohoney, the track resonates with heavy beats, rock guitar licks, and a spy-inspired MV. Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, and I.M. once again prove that they own a distinct style in Kpop.

TWICE: Alcohol-Free

Have you ever imagined what a day at the beach would sound like? TWICE decided to release a summer song that truly embodies that. Released in early June 2021, Alcohol-Free is a carefree bossa nova track that makes you think of sweet cocktail drinks, a cool breeze on a warm day, and nine lovely ladies just having the time of their life at the beach.

SEVENTEEN: Ready To Love

SEVENTEEN made a name for themselves by making youthful music paired with energetic choreography. With Ready To Love, the 13-member group proved they have grown as a band but still retain their infectious energy. The track was released in late June 2021 and rounds out the nominees for Best K-pop at VMAs 2021.

Song of The Year Nominee

BTS: Dynamite

Looking for Dynamite in the Best K-pop category? BTS’ first full English song was actually nominated for Song of the Year  2021.

MTV’s VMAs will be held on September 12, 2021.
