Soyou Returns to Music with New Mini Album “Summer Recipe”

Soyou, formerly of SISTAR, made a grand comeback with her second mini-album, Summer Recipe. A year and three months after her first mini-album, Day & Night, Soyou returns with a refreshing mix of genres, perfect for summer.

The mini-album’s title track, “ALOHA,” features Bora, Soyou‘s former groupmate in SISTAR. It’s a dance-pop song where Soyou’s refreshing vocals blend with lyrics that cheerfully greet the listener “hello,” just as the title suggests. The collaboration with Bora adds a celebratory mood to the song, reminding fans of the iconic summer vibes SISTAR was known for.

When asked about the similarity this new song has to SISTAR’s vibes, Soyou replied, “For ‘ALOHA,’ many people seem to think of SISTAR, and I can’t fill in the roles of the four members alone, but I wanted to try. It wasn’t initially planned for Bora to do this song with me, but when I heard her rap flow, I thought she was the only one who could pull it off. So she listened to it and gladly agreed to feature. There are also some dance moves that pay homage to the past.”

Summer Recipe is more than just a collection of songs; it’s Soyou‘s personal recipe for the season. She explained, “It means I created a special recipe to cool down the hot summer. I tried to make it diverse.”

Soyou put in plenty of effort to prepare for this album. She exercised regularly to maintain a toned figure. She shared, “In my last single album, I lost a lot of weight, even muscles. This time, I had to gain back what I lost, so I exercised diligently. To give a healthy impression, I got a tan after a long time. Especially for summer songs, there’s exposure, so I worked hard to show a toned figure.”

Soyou talks SISTAR, Waterbomb

Soyou also addressed the pressure of being called the ‘Summer Queen’ during SISTAR’s activities. She said, “I’m grateful, and it’s a pleasant burden. But I want to be a singer who’s remembered in all seasons, so I’ll strive for that. I think the energy SISTAR had was well suited for summer.“

While fans are eager for a SISTAR reunion, Soyou has stated that aligning schedules is challenging as all members are actively pursuing solo careers. However, she expressed a strong desire to repay their fans and hopes for a real reunion someday. She said, “When I meet with the members, we talk about it. We wonder when it would be good for us to reunite, but it’s hard for me to give a specific answer alone. Since we’re active in our respective places, aligning schedules is challenging. We don’t want to burden each other. We talked about setting a time and making it a gift for our fans, but it’s not easy. Still, I hope we can reunite someday.”

Soyou also addressed the shift in her image over time, “At some point, I think it shifted to ballads. It’s great, but lately, I haven’t received many offers to do events like Waterbomb. A few days ago, I attended one event and had so much fun. With this album, I want to sweep away Waterbomb next year. I want to let the officials know I’m ready.” — K-Pop News Writer

Kwon Eunbi on Her Diet, Popularity, and “The Flash” EP

Kwon Eunbi is causing a stir in the K-pop scene. Her remarkable transformation and burgeoning solo career have captured everyone’s attention. Known for her exceptional dancing and singing, as well as her gorgeous visuals, Eunbi has always been a crowd favorite. But her recent transformation ignited a frenzy among fans.

In the past, Eunbi was the leader of IZ*ONE. Born in 1995, people often said that she looked a bit like Red Velvet‘s Irene. Eunbi was already gorgeous then but became even more appealing when she adopted a more sensual image. Her appearance at the Waterbomb Nagoya music festival was a hot topic on social media. She tore up the stage with an electrifying performance. Her summery outfits also got people talking—in a good way, mind you.

Fans received Eunbi‘s new image warmly. They applauded her ability to transition between different styles easily. Her increase in popularity has resulted in a surge in “love calls” from those around her. She joked about this on a recent episode of SBS’ Strong Heart League, quipping, “They should have contacted me before.”

Eunbi has been grabbing headlines

Eunbi‘s path to solo stardom has not been free of challenges. In the same episode of Strong Heart League, she disclosed the extreme diet she followed in her trainee days. It involved eating only one apple slice for breakfast and one slice every hour. Eunbi combined her diet with an intense regimen of dance lessons, singing lessons, and plenty of exercise. She did that to meet the industry’s beauty standards and increase her chances of debuting. She said that she could still function normally even after three days on that diet.

Her openness about her diet and increasing popularity left viewers deeply impressed, as proven by the 4.7% rating the episode got (quite high for the show).

Eunbi has also been grabbing headlines for her music. Her first single album, The Flash, will drop on August 2. It features tracks like “Beautiful Night” and “Comet.”

The album’s highlight medley has stirred anticipation among fans eagerly awaiting Eunbi’s comeback. — K-Pop News Writer

Is Riize the Name of SM Entertainment’s New Kpop Boy Group?

Fans are already looking forward to the debut of SM Entertainment’s new boy group and they can’t help but look for any development about it.

Eagle-eyed netizens took to social media to discuss what could be the possible name of the said group, especially that some users have discovered that SM Entertainment has applied for a new trademark over the phrases “Rise&Realize” and “RIIZE.”

Online users pointed out how the agency applied for the trademark on May 24, 2023 — the same day wherein SM Entertainment released their statement about their plans for upcoming groups, as well as Shotaro and Sungchan’s departure from the group NCT.

This prompted fans to search for “Rise&Realize” and “RIIZE” on social media platforms, which led to them discovering Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok accounts that carry the name RIIZE_OFFICIAL. Said social media accounts were registered in April 2023.

Although SM Entertainment remains tight-lipped about their upcoming boy group, a representative from the agency has earlier confirmed that it is gearing up for a September debut.

“The new boy group is currently filming their music video and at the final stage of preparations,” the agency said.

SM Entertainment’s CEO Jang Cheol Hyuk has revealed that the new boy group will have former NCT members Sungchan and Shotaro and SM Rookies Eunseok and Seunghan as part of its lineup. The seven-piece act will also feature other members of Korean and American nationalities.

Meanwhile, aside from the new boy group, SM Entertainment is also currently forming the last unit of NCT. Through the reality series, NCT Universe: LASTART, they will be looking for members of NCT Tokyo.

SUGA loves Samsung

FIFTY FIFTY’s Agency Files for Trademark Rights in Major Markets

ATTRAKT, the agency of the girl group FIFTY FIFTY, has officially applied for trademark rights in the US, UK, China, and Japan. This comes after the group filed to suspend their exclusive contract, allowing them to operate independently. However, this development may restrict the members from performing under the name FIFTY FIFTY overseas without ATTRAKT’s consent.

On July 5, ATTRAKT filed for trademark rights in the four countries. The applications have already been assigned numbers and are currently in the process of being officially registered. According to Jong-Hak Jeon, a patent attorney representing ATTRAKT, each country’s trademark rights should be obtained individually due to the principle of national independence in intellectual property law.

Previously, ATTRAKT had applied for the English name of FIFTY FIFTY as a trademark in Korea on May 15. Later, on June 19, it was revealed that the four members who had requested the suspension of their exclusive contract also applied for the Korean name as a trademark. However, due to the Treaty Priority Right System in trademark law, countries like the US and the UK look at the first application date in Korea, May 15, as the standard. Ergo, even if the girls apply for trademark rights overseas in the future, the priority will be given to ATTRAKT.

What if ATTRAKT gets the rights?

There is no evidence that the members have applied for trademark rights overseas. If ATTRAKT’s overseas trademark rights are officially registered, their options will be reduced. Given the current situation, even if the members find a way to operate independently, taking domestic stages will be difficult. That’s why many believe FIFTY FIFTY may focus on overseas activities for now by partnering with a foreign label, considering their notable achievements on the US and UK charts. They took their first step on that road by contributing to the Barbie soundtrack.

But if ATTRAKT gets the rights, they can’t use the FIFTY FIFTY name overseas. That will put a monkey wrench in their plans. Stay tuned for more updates on this case. —K-Pop News Writer
