‘Castaway Diva’ Faces Controversy Due to Irresponsible Filming Practices

The hit tvN drama Castaway Diva, starring Park Eun Bin, is facing controversy. Reports from Jeju Ilbo on November 13 highlighted claims that the production staff left piles of rocks unattended at Hwangwooji Beach in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, Jeju, where some scenes were filmed. This beach is a popular spot for various activities, including swimming and snorkeling. It’s known for its its beauty and unique rock formations.

The production staff reportedly left thousands of stones on the beach after using them in a scene. Some even ended up on the road connected to Olle Trail Course 10, causing obstruction for Jeju citizens. They expressed dismay that the Castaway Diva staff didn’t clean up after filming.

The situation seems serious in terms of environmental damage, as noted by a resident. There are also suspicions that the production staff used the location without prior approval, a significant oversight given the area’s ecological significance. Filming in such locations typically requires administrative cooperation and permits. Engaging with the community in Andeok-myeon and Seogwipo is crucial, particularly if filming impacts local activities or access to the beach. Filmmakers must completely reverse any alterations they make to the beach or nearby areas for filming purposes to preserve the natural state of the location.

The ‘Castaway Diva’ team responds

In response to the controversy, the Castaway Diva team released a statement. They said they left the stones they used on the beach after discussing the possibility of additional filming with the local government. They also committed to cleaning the beach as soon as possible. Seogwipo officials stated that they will proceed with administrative procedures, such as restoration orders, if inspections confirm unauthorized use.

This is not the first controversy for Castaway Diva. In May, a man threw bricks at the drama’s set in Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, injuring a staff member. The man confessed to the crime later, stating that the light and noise during filming annoyed him. This incident raised suspicions about the excessive noise pollution caused by the production staff.

Castaway Diva, which premiered on October 28, 2023, is directed by Oh Choong-hwan and written by Park Hye Ryun and Eun Yeol. The drama follows the journey of Mok Ha, who survives alone on a deserted island for over fifteen years. – K-Pop News Writer
