The single “Sheesh” achieved remarkable streaming numbers, becoming the highest entry for a K-pop girl group on Spotify in 2024. It debuted with 1.76 million streams on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global Chart, landing at the sixty-ninth spot.

When is BABYMONSTER’s Full Album Release?

The group’s impressive achievements have not gone unnoticed. Yang Hyun-suk Announces Ahyeon’s Return to BABYMONSTER

Yang Hyun-suk, the founder of YG Entertainment, recently made a thrilling announcement: Ahyeon is rejoining BABYMONSTER! This news comes after her brief departure from the group a while back.

BABYMONSTER | YG Surprise Announcement

In November 2023, YG Entertainment announced that Ahyeon would sit out BABYMONSTER’s debut, citing health issues. While the label didn’t provide specifics, they committed to supporting her recovery. However, some speculated that her hiatus wasn’t health-related but due to a controversy involving her use of a racial slur during a performance at Hanlim Arts High School. A video of this incident went viral on social media, sparking significant backlash just before BABYMONSTER’s debut.

Regardless of the reasons behind her hiatus, YG Entertainment now deems Ahyeon ready to rejoin the group. She will participate in the group’s upcoming comeback with their first mini-album this spring. Consequently, BABYMONSTER will be recording new seven-member versions of their first two singles, “BATTER UP” and the pre-release single “Stuck In the Middle.” The original versions didn’t feature Ahyeon.

Ahyeon is expected to boost the group’s appeal

Ahyeon’s absence was keenly felt during the group’s debut, as she was long considered a potential superstar within YG Entertainment. Some critics and fans attribute the lukewarm reception of BABYMONSTER to the fact that Ahyeon wasn’t with the others at the time. Now that she’s back, her presence is expected to boost the group’s performance and appeal.

Following their comeback with “Stuck In the Middle” on February 1, and the release of their first mini-album around April, YG Entertainment has plans for the rookie group to release their first full-length album towards the end of the year. Yang Hyun-suk also revealed that YG Entertainment has expanded its in-house production team. This indicates that they now have enough manpower to ensure the timely release of the girl group’s new material.

Korean netizens have reacted positively to Ahyeon’s return, expressing excitement and high expectations for the impact she will bring to the rookie group. Their comments ranged from welcoming her back to expressing excitement for the group’s upcoming releases. – K-Pop News Writer

YG Entertainment Plans To Launch Another Group in 2024

It seems like powerhouse K-pop label YG Entertainment has big plans for 2024. According to its founder Yang Hyun-suk, their plans for the year include launching a new group. And, the director said, it might not even be limited to one group only!

“We are setting a goal to announce at least one new group within this year,” YG Entertainment said in a press release. Furthermore, the agency announced that this project aims to discover and nurture global rookies selected through both local and overseas auditions.

In 2023, it can be recalled that YG Entertainment has announced that they will be holding auditions throughout South Korea in 2024. Currently, the agency has kicked off their National Audition Tour in early January. Moreover, the audition is set to make stops at different parts of the country.

Although there’s no official details yet about the said group, fans are anticipating to have another addition to the growing family of YG Entertainment. To recall, the agency is home to powerhouse K-pop acts such as WINNER, BLACKPINK and AKMU. Among their rookie groups are TREASURE and BABYMONSTER.

As for their previous artists, the list includes BIGBANG, 2NE1, EPIK HIGH, and iKON.

YG Entertainment and its plans for existing groups

To ensure that 2024 is a successful year in terms of both music and profit, Yang added that they plan to secure new growth engines through their artists’ activities this year.

As for the agency’s existing groups, Yang made the surprise announcement of Ahyeon’s return to BABYMONSTER. To recall, the rookie girl group debuted with only six members in November. At the time, the agency notified the public of Ahyeon’s hiatus for health reasons.

Initially, BABYMONSTER is slated to release the new digital single Stuck in the Middlein February. After that, the group has earlier announced their plans for a mini-EP. With Ahyeon returning, Yang said that the album will be re-recorded with all seven members.

As for its boy group TREASURE, Yang announced that the 10-member act will start preparing new music after touring. Currently, the B.O.M.Bsingers are in the midst of their second Japanese Tour Reboot, with its last stop scheduled in late February.

However, the agency notably didn’t disclose any details about upcoming plans for BLACKPINK. In early January, it was confirmed that the four members—Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa—didn’t renew their individual contracts with the agency. Although, YG Entertainment has earlier announced that all group activities will still be handled by them.

YG Entertainment Wins Trademark Case Against Monster Energy

YG Entertainment has successfully defended its right to register certain trademarks for its new K-pop girl group in Singapore. The entertainment agency overcame opposition from Monster Energy Company (MEC), an American manufacturer of energy drinks. The case, filed in a Singapore court, concluded with the court dismissing MEC’s objections and siding with YG Entertainment.

YG, known for managing superstars like BIGBANG and BLACKPINK, previously applied to trademark “BABYMONSTER” and “BABYMONSTERS.” These trademarks were for a range of products including clothing and music, specifically for their new girl group, BABYMONSTER.

BABYMONSTER, consisting of six members—Asa, Chiquita, Pharita, Rami, Rora, and Ruka—debuted on November 27, 2023. They were named Rookie of the Year – Global Streaming at the Circle Chart Music Awards for their first single, “Batter Up.” They’re set to release their new song, “Stuck in the Middle,” on February 1.

YG Entertainment Wins Trademark Case Against Monster Energy

The victory is a notable one for YG

MEC, known for their energy drinks, opposed YG’s trademark applications, arguing that the names were too similar to their own “MONSTER” trademarks and could confuse consumers. However, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) disagreed, finding the names different enough, especially with the addition of “BABY.”

The adjudicator, Ravindran Muthucumarasamy, referred to a past case, The Singapore Professional Golfers’ Association v Chen Eng Waye and others. Muthucumarasamy stressed the need to first see if a trademark really stands out as unique for specific goods or services. He concluded, “Having considered all the pleadings and evidence filed and the submissions made in writing and during the hearing, I find that the oppositions fail on all grounds.” MEC was also ordered to pay YG’s legal fees of around 17,400 SGD (13,000 USD).

This isn’t the first clash between these two companies. In 2020, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) also sided with YG in a similar dispute. This victory is a notable one for YG Entertainment, reinforcing the importance of distinct trademarks in the global entertainment industry. – K-Pop News Writer
