Netizens Discover SEVENTEEN Fans Discarding Albums in Japanese Streets

SEVENTEEN’s latest album, “17 IS RIGHT HERE,” accompanied by the electrifying title track “MAESTRO,” marked a significant milestone for the K-Pop sensation. However, amidst the excitement surrounding their comeback, a troubling incident surfaced online, sparking widespread dismay among fans as hundreds of albums were discovered discarded in Japanese streets.

SEVENTEEN Albums Discarded in Japanese Streets Shocks Netizens

A Twitter post depicting a distressing scene in Shibuya, Japan, quickly garnered over 1 million views. The video showcased hundreds of SEVENTEEN albums unceremoniously discarded on the streets, accompanied by a sign inviting passersby to take as many as they desired. The sight struck a chord with fans, who were appalled to witness the blatant disregard for the group’s hard work and dedication poured into each album.

The incident took a disheartening turn as it became apparent that opportunistic individuals seized the opportunity to capitalize on the albums, primarily for their coveted photo cards and codes, rather than appreciating the music and supporting the artists. This exploitation not only undermined SEVENTEEN’s artistic endeavors but also deprived genuine fans, affectionately known as CARATs, of the opportunity to acquire the albums they desired, exacerbating the disappointment felt within the fandom.

The aftermath of the incident also sparked a wave of reflection among netizens, who called for a fundamental overhaul of the album purchasing system. The prevailing sentiment was one of urgency, with many expressing a fervent desire to curb the actions of resellers and safeguard the integrity of artists’ efforts from being callously discarded or exploited for profit.

As the online discourse intensified, fans rallied behind the notion of implementing measures to prevent such incidents from recurring, emphasizing the importance of respecting the artistic contributions of idols and ensuring equitable access to their music for genuine enthusiasts. The collective outcry also underscored the need for systemic changes within the industry to safeguard the interests of both artists and fans alike, fostering a more sustainable and supportive environment for K-Pop culture to thrive.

The feature also delves into S.Coups as an individual. In a revealing two-page interview, he discusses his role as a leader, the dynamics within SEVENTEEN, and his thoughts on the group’s future, offering fans a deeper insight into his personal and professional life. To coincide with the June issue’s release, SPUR Magazine announced a special campaign that includes signed photos. They also released a behind-the-scenes video and outtakes from the photoshoot.

SEVENTEEN Challenges Gender Norms in ‘17 IS RIGHT HER’ Concept Photos

In the lead-up to their upcoming greatest hits album, 17 IS RIGHT HERE, K-pop powerhouse SEVENTEEN is breaking new ground, not only in their music but also in fashion and societal norms. The boys have created quite a stir by incorporating skirts into their concept photos. By doing so, SEVENTEEN is challenging traditional ideas about what is appropriate or expected for men to wear. That’s no small feat in a conservative country like South Korea.

The members who opted to wear skirts are Jeonghan, Jun, Mingyu, and The8. The concept photos for the new album involve SEVENTEEN revisiting iconic concepts and songs they did in the past. Jeonghan, the group’s second-eldest member, chose to embody “Super” from their SEVENTEEN 10th Mini Album FML. He wore a suit and varsity jacket to go with the skirt.

Jun went for a skirt that matched his statement shirt and the texture of his blazer, while Mingyu sported a skirt that matched the pattern and texture of his tartan suit. Finally, The8 portrayed their 2023 hit “God of Music.” He paired his skirt with a suit and jacket. Their sartorial choices has been met with enthusiasm from fans and netizens alike, who appreciate the group’s efforts to push the boundaries of gender-specific fashion.

SEVENTEEN set themselves apart with the skirts

SEVENTEEN‘s decision to incorporate skirts into their wardrobe aligns with a growing trend in fashion where lines are becoming more and more blurry.

In a country known for its conservatism, especially regarding gender norms and presentation, SEVENTEEN’s approach can be seen as a progressive move that sparks discussions about gender identity and expression. This choice not only sets the group apart from their peers, but it also aligns with global conversations on diversity and inclusivity. It may even increase their appeal to international audiences who value such qualities.

By adopting such styles, the 13-member boy group not only showcases their unique artistic vision but also prompts a wider conversation within South Korea itself, potentially influencing perceptions and acceptance of non-traditional gender presentations in broader culture. – K-Pop News Writer

S.Coups Appears on the Cover of DAZED Korea’s Latest Issue

This month, the fashion and culture magazine DAZED Korea released a cover story featuring the leader of SEVENTEEN, S.Coups. With his distinctive, deep-set eyes and manly physique, S.Coups made hearts flutter on the set of the photoshoot. He cut a dashing figure in clothes by Fendi, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Versace, and more.

The photoshoot was organized by a team of skilled professionals. This team was led by DAZED Korea editor Keem Hyobeen. Also on board were art director Song Yuli, photographer Jang Dukhwa, stylist Choi Younghoe, and writer Kwon Sohee. S.Coups’s hair and makeup were done by Woo Eunhye and Ko Lina, respectively, both of whom are associated with Cutloose. Their collaboration resulted in a well-executed and visually appealing photoshoot.

After sustaining an ACL injury in August 2023, S.Coups went on hiatus. In the interview that accompanied the photos, he opened up about his recovery. He shared, “Yes, I’ve been diligently doing rehab, and watching all the guys’ performances. It was the first time I watched from the audience. As I watched, I thought, ‘Ah, they deserve to receive love.’ Being skilled is one thing, but they looked really happy being on stage.”

[LULU’S 101] FAST FORWARD with S.Coups

Frustrated and angry

S.Coups reflected on his role within SEVENTEEN. One of his duties involves the group’s greeting. When they have to introduce themselves, he leads the rest of the group by asking them to “Say the name.” They respond by shouting the group’s name.

According to S.Coups, his members did their best to execute the greeting properly in his absence, but they’re only human, so they naturally messed up from time to time. “They’re really bad at the greeting,” he told DAZED Korea with a chuckle. “They would keep making mistakes, so we’d talk about it and tease each other for it. That’s why I thought ‘I wish we were all together’ even more.”

While the rest of the members were working, he spent much time alone, which he found difficult. “I tried to be honest with my feelings. I was frustrated and angry with myself many times because I went from someone who uses their body to someone who can’t. Rehab felt more like overcoming myself rather than like exercise. I was worried. I had concerns like, ‘Even if I consistently do rehab, will I be able to use my body like before?’ Since I got hurt, I unconsciously became more scared and cautious when I moved.” Thinking of his members and the fans gave him the strength to go on.

[NINE HEART PICKS] S.COUPS

S.Coups is still taking it easy

The interview also delved into S.Coups’s leadership style and how it has evolved over the years. He credits fellow SEVENTEEN member Jeonghan with helping him become a better leader.

“Up until 2020, I was kind of a scary hyung,” S.Coups admits. “At one point, there were a lot of rules, and I gave a lot of feedback as the hyung. I did that wanting the members to love each other the most when it came to this job. But then we ended up not really being happy on stage. SEVENTEEN’s charm won’t show when things are awkward, too disciplined, and uptight. That’s why I felt like I was doing something wrong. At the time, Jeonghan really helped me. He has always had a casual, friend-like relationship with the members, so he gave me lots of advice and even conveyed to the members how I really felt. From that point on, I let go of a lot of things.”

S.Coups’s condition has since improved to the point that he has been able to return to work, although he’s still taking it easy. SEVENTEEN is gearing up for a comeback and more concerts. In the meantime, CARATs can see more of S.Coups in DAZED Korea’s print edition and on their website. – K-Pop News Writer

SEVENTEEN’s S.Coups Exempted From Military Service Due to ACL Injury

SEVENTEEN‘s leader, S.Coups, has been exempted from serving in the South Korean military. This exemption is due to a severe knee injury he sustained last year.

S.Coups underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and lateral collateral ligament reconstruction in his left knee due to a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament. It was a major surgery, and he has been receiving rehabilitation treatment for a long period since last year. It is because of this that S.Coups was classified as Grade 5 in his physical examination,” his agency, PLEDIS Entertainment, said in a statement.

Understand Knee Ligament Injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)

Being in Grade 5 exempts him from active duty. He is required to serve only in military affairs during wartime situations. His exemption is crucial as individuals born in 1995, like him, must enlist for active duty within the year.

PLEDIS Entertainment had previously announced that S.Coups would resume promoting with SEVENTEEN. “As a result of consistent treatment and ample rest, the injured area has somewhat improved,” they wrote. “Recently, he has received medical advice that it is okay to fulfill his scheduled activities as long as it does not strain his body excessively.”

ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament) Tear and Repair

How are exemptions determined?

In South Korea, a physical examination determines military service exemptions and assignments. This process assigns military grades from 1 to 7. Grades 1 to 3 indicate fitness for active duty. Grade 4 is for those who qualify for supplemental service. Grade 6 leads to exemption from military service, and Grade 7 is for those who need a re-examination due to health issues. Exemptions also go to individuals with exceptional talents or debilitating health conditions.

Grade 5 in South Korea’s military classification generally means assignment to alternative service. This is instead of active duty due to physical or health conditions. There are instances where those classified as Grade 5 may still be exempted from all forms of military service. This includes alternative or social service. The decision is based on specific circumstances or additional evaluations of their condition. Each case is evaluated individually. Exemptions or assignments can vary based on the health issues’ nature and severity.

EXEMPT from military service?

Reality is reality

This policy aligns with broader policies detailed on the Yeson Hospital bulletin board. This platform facilitates e-consultations. Korean netizens can seek advice from medical specialists. According to one specialist, the Ministry of National Defense Ordinance No. 950 updated on February 1, 2018, says those who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction are classified as Grade 5. This classification means they’re exempted from military service regardless of the surgery’s outcome.

The specialist’s explanation, dated July 29, 2018, notes that the exemption remains due to the knee’s vulnerability to further damage and arthritis. “In our experience, even if the patient insists on joining the military or conscripted police, life will not be easy because of the injured knee. In that case, colleagues and superiors will also have a hard time. The desire to fulfill one’s national defense duty deserves praise, but reality is reality.”

SEVENTEEN’s Producer Bumzu Is Highest-Paid K-Pop Songwriter of 2023

Bumzu, the creative force behind SEVENTEEN, was named the highest-earning K-pop songwriter for the year 2023. The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) made this announcement, giving Bumzu the Grand Prize at the 10th KOMCA Awards on February 26, 2024. The Grand Prize goes to the creator who made the most money from their copyrighted music in the previous year. BTS’s producer Pdogg held this title for five consecutive years.

The annual KOMCA Awards, held every February, also recognizes achievements like the best rearrangement and most-streamed song. Bumzu’s work with PLEDIS Entertainment artists like NU’EST and SEVENTEEN played a pivotal role in propelling K-pop to the forefront of the global mainstream market. With SEVENTEEN alone selling over 10 million albums in South Korea and securing four No. 1 songs on the US Billboard World Albums chart, Bumzu’s influence is undeniable.

“Frankly, I feel a lot of pressure. There are many times when that pressure gnaws away at me. But it’s also true that this feeling drives me to become stronger again,” said Bumzu in a previous interview.

[Special Clip] BUMZU(범주) _ 아낀다(Adore U) of 세븐틴(SEVENTEEN) Cover

How Bumzu got his start

Growing up in Seoul, Bumzu—whose real name is Kye Beom-joo—was a talented child violinist. At five years old, he was already writing songs in his head. He was heavily influenced by his older brother, who filled their home with musical equipment. Because he was forbidden to touch any of it for fear of breaking something, he began working part-time to buy his own equipment so he could get into music production himself.

Bumzu’s musical influences are diverse, ranging from visual kei—a blend of glam rock, metal, and punk popular in Japan since the 80s—to hip-hop and R&B. He honed his skills in Hongdae’s underground music scene. In 2012, he competed in the televised talent show Superstar K. Although he didn’t win, he gained enough popularity to release his first EP a year later. After joining PLEDIS Entertainment, he started out as a vocal coach for a group of young trainees who later became SEVENTEEN. He co-wrote their first hit, “Adore U.” He now credits that song with helping him to develop and refine his style.

[M/V] 세븐틴(SEVENTEEN)-아낀다 (Adore U)

Collaborative spirit

Bumzu spends most of his day writing songs for other artists, working in the studio, and attending meetings with few breaks. He emphasizes the importance of collaboration and open communication in the music industry. “Nobody can accomplish everything or shine alone,” he says. “I have a team to strengthen my expertise, and I always consult professionals in other areas.” He works closely with SEVENTEEN member Woozi, who he says is one of his closest friends. Together, they co-write and co-produce the group’s releases.

For Bumzu, inspiration can come from anywhere, even while working out. “I feel like I’m in the same boat with the singers I produce for. We know that teamwork is important and everyone tries to go in one direction. If I row the opposite way, we can’t sail where we want to go. Even a small paddle can have a big impact,” he shares, highlighting the collaborative spirit that has led to his success. – K-Pop News Writer

Seungkwan Releases First Self-Penned Song, ‘Dandelion’

SEVENTEEN’s main vocalist Boo Seungkwan recently released the solo single “Dandelion,” which was warmly received by fans for its well-crafted lyrics and Seungkwan’s emotional vocals.

The song’s blend of R&B elements with piano and strings gives it a comforting vibe. The lyrics, co-written by the idol, liken dandelion seeds to little beacons of hope. They encourage people to move forward despite the pains of the past. Lines like “I live my day as if I forgot yesterday” and “I walk gently in the spring breeze” evoke a sense of peace and tranquility. The chorus emphasizes the importance of love, sharing it with others, and keeping memories alive through acts of kindness.

The song is dedicated to Seungkwan‘s late BFF, ASTRO’s Moonbin. Before he passed away, Moonbin posted a photo of a dandelion on ASTRO’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. Dandelions are celebrated for their resilience and ability to thrive even in adverse conditions. They symbolize hope and the renewal of spring following a severe winter. Moonbin’s final words, coupled with the imagery of the dandelion, provided comfort to fans. They serve as a cherished reminder of the joy and warmth he brought into their lives.

This connection to Moonbin makes Seungkwan’s new song all the more meaningful, especially for those who knew the late idol well. In fact, following the release of “Dandelion,” Seungkwan and Moonbin’s bandmate, Cha Eunwoo, shared a moment of reflection. They took a late-night walk together while listening to the song.

Seungkwan talks ‘Dandelion’

On the eve of the song’s release, Seungkwan shared his thoughts on Weverse, “The song I’ve been working on since last year’s break will be released to the world in about two hours. I wasn’t nervous at all, but now I’m feeling a bit jittery,” he admitted. “It’s probably because this is the first song being released by just me, aside from broadcasts or OSTs. But I’m happy to start this new beginning with ‘Dandelion.’

Seungkwan also talked about his creative process. “Working on songs has always been a top item on my bucket list, but I kept postponing it, using my busy schedule as an excuse and finding it a bit daunting. But I wanted to ensure ‘Dandelion’ wasn’t delayed, and thanks to some wonderful people, I was able to muster the courage to work on it. Through this work, I’ve realized once again how much effort from many people goes into completing a single song. This process has been an invaluable series of experiences and lessons, turning it into an unforgettable work period and deepening my love for music.”

He ended by saying, “I hope this song reaches many people, including CARATs. I wish that when spring arrives and they see dandelion seeds, even if only for a brief moment, it inspires them to live with a bit more warmth. I’m grateful to everyone who contributed to making this song’s release possible.”

CARATs React as Na PD’s 20-Year-Old Dance Video Resurfaces Online

SEVENTEEN fans are currently reveling in a delightful surprise as a 20-year-old dance video featuring the beloved producer Na Yeong-seok has gone viral. The video surfaced on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on February 23. It features a younger Na PD energetically dancing to Toni Basil’s iconic track “Hey Mickey,” leaving fans both amused and impressed.

This unexpected gem came from an episode of the old South Korean variety show Heroine 5. Na PD, then 29 years old, was a guest on the show alongside Jee Seok-jin. In a memorable segment, Na PD was challenged to dance to “Hey Mickey.” He enthusiastically accepted the challenge and danced his heart out. He even taught his shoulder moves to the other guests on the show. The video has since captured the hearts of CARATs, all of whom can’t get enough of his spirited dancing. After two decades, it resurfaced, highlighting a side of Na PD that many didn’t know existed.

The resurgence of this video is particularly significant because of Na PD’s relationship with SEVENTEEN. The producer and the 13-member boy group became close after working together several times. Their most recent collaboration was the six-episode reality travel show NANA Tour with SEVENTEEN. Their interactions, filled with comedic moments and friendly banter, have endeared Na PD to CARATs.

CARATs praised Na PD’s dancing

Fans, recalling the many hilarious exchanges between the producer and the boy group, couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of SEVENTEEN reacting to Na PD’s dancing. Some took to X to write, “Don’t let SEVENTEEN see this.” They feared the boy group would never let Na PD hear the end of it if they ever watched the video of him dancing to “Hey Mickey.” Some added that Jeonghan in particular would have a field day with it, as he and Na PD like to playfully one-up each other.

CARATs have taken to social media to praise Na PD’s dancing, with many joking that he could have had a good career as a K-pop idol if he hadn’t gone into directing and producing. They affectionately dubbed him “Dino‘s father,” after noticing that 29-year-old Na PD looked a little bit like SEVENTEEN’s youngest member.

This incident underscores the deep bond between Na PD and SEVENTEEN, as well as the relationship he has with their fans. Here’s hoping they get more chances to work together in the future! – K-Pop News Writer

SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids among K-pop Acts That Made It To IFPI’s Best-Selling Artists Worldwide in 2023

2023 was indeed a huge year for K-pop and groups SEVENTEEN and Stray Kids were among those that dominated it.

On Thursday, February 22, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) released its annual rankings for the best-selling artists worldwide and several K-pop acts made it to the 2023 list!

According to Soompi, IFPI’s Global Recording Artist Chart “ranks aritsts based on physical sales, downloads, and streaming over the course of the past year.”

Leading the K-pop acts is the God of Music hitmakers SEVENTEEN. Notably, the 13-member boy group ranked second overall in the worldwide rankings, just right after award-winning singer songwriter Taylor Swift. Moreover, this served group’s the third consecutive year in the top 10 of the chart.

In 2023, SEVENTEEN bagged numerous awards for their recent albums FML and Seventeenth Heaven. Aside from that, the “Super” hitmakers made an unprecedented record of more than 10 million physical album sales, from January to September of 2023 alone.

Following SEVENTEEN is the 4th generation group Stray Kids, who achieved a number of milestones in 2023. To specify, the “LALALALA” singers scored a back-to-back No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album Sales Chart for their full-length album 5-Star and their mini-album Rock Star.

Moreover, the five-member boy group TOMORROW X TOGETHER also made it to the list. Placing seventh in the overall list, TOMORROW X TOGETHER managed to be one of IFPI’s best-selling artists with the release of their album The Name Chapter: FREEFALL.

After the three boy groups, rookie monsters NewJeans made history as they became the first and only K-op girl group to make it to the Top 10 list. The quintet, who are best known for hits Hype Boy”, “Attention”, “Super Shy”, ranked eight overall.

Fans rejoice as K-pop continues to dominate

With the K-pop acts securing their respective spots in the IFPI best-selling artists list for 2023, they now join international stars Drake, The Weeknd, Lana del Rey, and others in the Top 10.
