JYP, SM, YG Entertainment Unveil 2024 Plans

Before HYBE became a major player in the K-pop industry, its growth was mainly driven by three agencies: JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. Here’s what these agencies have planned for fans this year.

TWICE “With YOU-th” Mood Film

JYP’s global dominance

JYP Entertainment is set to continue its global dominance in 2024, with its top groups Stray Kids and TWICE at the forefront. Stray Kids, having achieved four consecutive Billboard 200 number ones, will drop two new albums and embark on their third world tour. TWICE, as one of the biggest girl groups around, will make a comeback in February with their 13th EP With YOU-th. They’ll drop a pre-release single on February 2, and the EP itself will follow on February 23.

Aside from preparing for DAY6’s full group comeback, JYP is reportedly working to debut a new boy group. The agency is also set to launch groups born of international collaborations. NEXZ, from Nizi Project season two with Sony Music Japan, and VCHA, from the A2K project with Republic Records, will begin promoting in 2024. Finally, JYP’s partnership with Live Nation for North American performances will give its artists a big platform in the world’s largest music market.

2024 SM GLOBAL AUDITION

SM remains optimistic

In 2024, SM Entertainment’s artists will broaden their reach through diverse channels. The rookie group RIIZE, which has grown in popularity since its debut, is leading the charge. NCT is expected to continue their activities seamlessly despite the anticipated enlistment of some members. SM’s plan is to strengthen its global presence through major performances. These include Key’s solo concert, NCT 127’s third tour, SMTOWN LIVE in Tokyo Dome, and Ten’s first solo concert.

SM is also planning to launch new artists, starting with aespa’s yet-to-be-named sister group. The final team of the NCT system, the Japan-based NCT NEW TEAM, is set to debut after a wildly successful pre-debut tour in Japan.

Despite facing challenges like a change in ownership and an ongoing stock probe, SM achieved record earnings last year. However, its market leadership has weakened, and its revenue heavily depends on loyal fanbases. Even so, SM remains optimistic. In fact, the agency is planning a global audition in 2024 to discover new talent, demonstrating its focus on continued growth and innovation.

BABYMONSTER NEXT PHASE | YG Announcement

YG plans to go all-in

In 2024, YG Entertainment plans to go all-in on promoting BABYMONSTER, with a focus on global expansion. BABYMONSTER will release their second single “Stuck In The Middle” this February, followed by a mini-album in April. The group plans to build a strong industry presence by releasing new music every two months.

YG is also ramping up activities with its other groups. AKMU, celebrating its 10th anniversary, has something special planned for fans. BLACKPINK will continue promoting as a group under YG, but Jennie and Jisoo signed with other agencies for solo activities. Lisa and Rosé are expected to follow suit, but no official announcement has been made yet. Meanwhile, boy group TREASURE is expected to maintain a strong presence in Japan and Korea.

The pink blood is truly with YoonA of K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation, also known as SNSD, as she signs with SM Entertainment for the third time!

On Wednesday, January 4, SM Entertainment announced that the idol-actress has renewed her exclusive contract with the agency. With this, they’ll be extending their 17-year partnership.

Moreover, reports claimed that the two parties smoothly ended up with an agreement that is based on the trust and confidence they have for each other.

“We plan to provide full support to Lim Yoona, who is actively working in various fields across dramas, movies, and on stage, so that she can shine even more and continue to be an artist who makes a global influence,” SM Entertainment said in a statement. To conclude their post, the agency also asked the fans to continue supporting the artist.

YoonA throughout the years

For those unaware, YoonA debuted as a member of the girl group Girls’ Generation in 2007. Widely known as the group’s “center,” the singer received love from both local and international fans for her unrivaled visuals.

In the same year, YoonA ventured into the world of acting by starring in a small role. In 2008, she bagged her first lead role in the KBS drama You are My Destiny. Since then, the idol-actress has proven that she can excel both on stage and on screen.

Among her remarkable dramas include The K2, Prime Minister & I, and Big Mouth. Recently, her latest drama, King the Land, secured her numerous awards including the 2023 APAN Global Star Award, Idol Champ Best Actress Award. Moreover, she also received the Idol Champ Best Couple Award, with her King The Land co-star Lee Junho.

EXO’s Baekhyun Rumored to Establish Own Agency

From being an outstanding performer, Baekhyun of the K-pop boy group EXO is now rumored to take on a new venture in his career. This time, as an agency owner and a CEO.

On Wednesday, January 3, several Korean media outlets reported that Baekhyun has launched his own label, I&B100. According to Tenasia, the idol has already completed the formal registration of the company. Moreover, the artist has also allegedly formed its team of internal directors in the label.

To recall, reports about I&B100 first made headlines last year as the EXO vocalist allegedly established the agency in June 2023.

Furthermore, the same report by Tenasia also claimed that his fellow EXO members, Chen and Xiumin, will also be joining the said label.

However, neither Baekhyun nor SM Entertainment have yet to address the reports about the label.

If proven to be true, I&B100 will be Baekhyun’s second owned company. In August 2023, the singer revealed that he set up One Signature with his friend Kasper. Notably, the EXO member said that the agency aims to produce good choreographers and dancers.

As there’s no confirmation yet about Baekhyun’s agency I&B100, EXO fans are worried as to what it means for the group. Especially considering how there’s several huge changes in EXO for 2023 alone.

SM Entertainment’s earlier statement abouts Baekhyun and EXO

To note, Baekyun, Chen, and Xiumin filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment in June. The EXO-CBX sub-unit cited unclear handling of earnings and slave contracts as their motivation. However, both parties have reached a settlement after an almost three-week legal battle.

In August, Baekhyun revealed his plans to establish an agency in a live broadcast on Instagram. With that, he also clarified that he will remain with EXO. “I will be operating a company while staying with SM Entertainment. And continue to be active with EXO members,” he said.

Moreover, SM Entertainment also released a statement saying that their exclusive contract for the three EXO members are still in place. “We cannot reveal the specific conditions. But in accordance with the agreement with the company, we have made it possible for the three members to engage in their individual activities,” they added.

In October 2023, SM Entertainment confirmed that EXO member D.O will have his contract expired by November. Shortly after, it was announced that D.O. will be pursuing his acting and individual activities through Company SooSoo. Despite being in a new agency, SM Entertainment emphasized that D.O. will still continue his EXO activities under them.

Given the situation with D.O, it appeared that it might also be the case for Baekhyun should the rumors of his new agency be true. Which means that the group’s fandom, EXO-Ls, can be reassured that EXO will continue to perform together despite being under separate agencies.

RIIZE Wins New Artist of the Year at 2023 Melon Music Awards

RIIZE just won their first award as a rookie group and it’s a fitting one for the new idols. After all, it has been 15 years since an SM Entertainment act clinched the New Artist of the Year award at the prestigious Melon Music Awards.

RIIZE Achieves Record-Breaking Win for New Artist of the Year at 2023 Melon Music Awards

In a historic moment at the 2023 Melon Music Awards, SM Entertainment’s rookie boy group RIIZE, along with the project group ZEROBASEONE, secured the prestigious New Artist of the Year award. The achievement marked a significant record, as RIIZE became the third group under SM Entertainment to clinch the title, following in the footsteps of K-Pop trailblazers SHINee and Super Junior.

Notably, SHINee, another iconic group from SM Entertainment, had previously won the New Artist of the Year award at the Melon Music Awards in 2008. This marked the second time that an SM Entertainment group had received this honor, with Super Junior securing the title in 2006.

The win not only celebrated RIIZE’s remarkable debut but also served as a touching moment of continuity within the SM Entertainment family. Taking place at the iconic Tokyo Dome from February 21-22, 2024 this marks the 20th installment of the prestigious SMTOWN LIVE show at this renowned venue.

Building on the success of last year’s SMTOWN LIVE 2022: SMCU Express @Tokyo, which drew a staggering 150,000 attendees over three days, the upcoming concerts on February 21 and 22 are poised to continue this legacy. Notably, this event will mark the return of SMTOWN LIVE to the Tokyo Dome after the sold-out shows last August 2022.

The star-studded roster includes Kangta, TVXQ, Super Junior, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon from Girls’ Generation. Also performing are groups Red Velvet, NCT 127, NCT Dream, WayV, aespa, RIIZE, and NCT NEW TEAM. From the teaser alone, fans are already anticipating unforgettable performances from these diverse and talented roster of artists.

Beyond individual performances, the audience can anticipate special collaboration stages featuring members from different groups. As SM Entertainment brings its signature concert series to Tokyo once again, fans can expect a celebration of music, unity, and unforgettable moments at the SMTOWN LIVE 2024: SMCU Palace in Tokyo.

SMTOWN in 2023

Unsurprisingly, the SMTOWN LIVE 2024: SMCU Palace in Tokyo will be one of the most anticipated events from SM Entertainment after the agency had a series of shake ups this year.

As for the lineup, it’s noticeable how EXO is not part of the performers. Although the agency didn’t disclose any reason, fans are attributing it to the possibility of the members’ contract with the label. To recall, Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin had a legal battle with SM Entertainment, while members Sehun and Chanyeol were also rumored to leave the agency. Meanwhile, D.O. has signed with Company SooSoo for his individual activities.

Aside from EXO, NCT also had a series of changes. In May, SM Entertainment announced the departure of Lucas from NCT and WayV. Meanwhile, former NCT members Sungchan and Shotaro debuted with SM Entertainment’s newest boy group, RIIZE, instead. Furthermore, NCT has also formed NCT NEW TEAM, the last chapter to their expansion concept.

Given these changes, fans are looking forward to seeing how SM Entertainment would fare in 2024.

SM Entertainment’s rookie boy group RIIZE made their first public appearance without Seunghan. This marked their debut appearance as a 6-member group, addressing the public following Seunghan’s suspension.

RIIZE Attends Breast Cancer Awareness Event As 6-Member Group

On November 24, RIIZE was in attendance at the 18th W Korea Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign event held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The members who were present were Shotaro, Eunseok, Sungchan, Wonbin, Sohee, and Anton. This also marks the first time that RIIZE made an appearance as a 6-member group.

The group’s appearance comes after a series of controversies involving Seunghan, which led to his indefinite hiatus from group activities. The controversies emerged when online posts exposed past photos of Seunghan, alleging behavior such as asserting dominance over fellow idol trainees at SM Entertainment and his previous agency, along with engaging in negative behavior during Instagram Live sessions.

RIIZE’s public appearance at the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign event serves as an opportunity for the group to make a collective statement and showcase their unity as a 6-member ensemble. It also allows them to engage with the public and fans, emphasizing their commitment to the group’s objectives and activities despite the challenges they have faced.
