Teen Vogue Spotlights K-Pop’s Odd Eye Circle in Exclusive Interview

Teen Vogue recently featured the K-pop group Odd Eye Circle. American writer Tamar Herman sat down with the group via Zoom for an exclusive interview. They discussed the group’s transition from LOONA to ARTMS, and their plans for the future.

In 2017, Odd Eye Circle, a sub-unit of LOONA, made waves in the K-pop scene. The trio, consisting of Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry, introduced a unique blend of dance music and alt R&B that set the stage for LOONA‘s future success. But 2023 marked a significant shift. Due to contract disputes, the group left their previous agency, Blockberry Creative, amid several lawsuits. That signaled the end of LOONA as we knew it. 

But now, Odd Eye Circle is back and leading the charge for ARTMS, a collective of former LOONA members. Earlier this year, the trio reunited with ex-LOONA members Heejin and Haseul at Jaden Jeong’s new label Modhaus. Jeong was LOONA’s early-stage creative producer. In the Teen Vogue feature, the official artist profile of ARTMS is quoted as saying, “ARTMS is not a name of a new group. It’s a story about the amazing strategies and plans of the girls to get to the moon. Choerry, HeeJin, JinSoul, and Kim Lip will start this story.”

Soon, Odd Eye Circle will release their second-ever album, Version Up, under the ARTMS banner. Choerry says the lead single, “Air Force One,” is a track that “really fits the summer vibes.” It also symbolizes the group’s evolution. Kim Lip, co-lyricist of “Air Force One,” explains that they all wore Converse during the LOONA days. It was their signature shoe. “However, wearing [Nike] Air Force Ones now symbolizes our new start as a group by changing our symbol shoes.”

Their Odd Eye Circle roots

The trio revisited their earlier album and recordings, striving to distinguish Odd Eye Circle’s Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry from their roles in LOONA. Kim Lip shares, “We’re trying to bring our old colors and our musicality along for the new journey and the new release. And we’re also bringing the old storyline of our worldview with us for this. However, you’ll be able to see just the overall upped version of them, just like the album name, in terms of our visuals or even our skills.”

Working with Modhaus CEO Jaden Jeong again helped bring back the expressive, quirky Odd Eye Circle spirit. Reuniting with Jeong, Odd Eye Circle says, was natural. Choerry shares, “He has a lot of love [and support] for us,” which made the decision to join Modhaus an easy one.

While they’re excited about returning to their Odd Eye Circle roots, that doesn’t mean they don’t regret leaving the past behind. JinSoul admits she has mixed feelings about it. “We achieved a lot during the LOONA days, and it feels, not necessarily sad, but it’s not a great feeling to let all that go and create a new beginning,” admits JinSoul. “However, because of those experiences, we’re able to do what we do now as Odd Eye Circle. So I’m not that sad. Because of those experiences, we can show many new and unique sides of ourselves as Odd Eye Circle too.”

BTS Biography ‘Beyond the Story’ Tops The New York Times Best Sellers List

The official biography of the K-pop supergroup BTS, titled Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS,’ made history. It topped ‘The New York Times Best Sellers’ list. This marks the first time a book by a Korean author went to No. 1 on the prestigious list. The book’s success underscores the immense global influence of BTS and its captivating content.

Co-authored by BTS and Myeongseok Kang, the book traces the group’s remarkable journey since their debut. It secured the top spot in the non-fiction hardcover category and the Combined Print & E-Book Non-fiction category, according to the list published by The New York Times on July 19.

The success of Beyond the Story extends beyond the U.S. market. The book dominated the weekly bestseller lists of domestic online bookstores like Aladin and Yes24 as soon as the Korean version became available for pre-order. The book soared to the top of Kyobo Book Center’s comprehensive weekly bestseller list upon release.

Internationally, Beyond the Story topped Amazon’s bestseller lists in several countries, including Australia, Brazil, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It even set a new record for the highest number of pre-orders on Brazil’s Amazon.

An Intimate Look at BTS

Beyond the Story pulls back the curtain on BTS’s seven members—RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—and their rise to become 21st-century pop icons.

The book also touches on the group’s struggles with industry disdain, performance flubs, and public bullying in their early days. Despite these challenges, BTS built a dedicated fan base through their authentic and intimate vlogs, a departure from the highly produced content typical of the K-pop industry.

The smashing success of Beyond the Story is a testament to BTS‘s influence and connection with ARMY. Their impact extends beyond music, breaking barriers worldwide.

The biography’s success also highlights the growing global interest in K-pop and Korean culture. Ryan Gosling Gifts Jimin a Guitar in a Playful Twitter Video

On July 19, American actor Ryan Gosling posted a video message for BTS’s Jimin. He shared it on the Twitter page of his latest film Barbie.

“Hi Jimin, it’s Ryan Gosling here. I notice that your ‘Permission to Dance’ outfit is the same as my Ken outfit in the upcoming movie Barbie. I have to give it to you—you wore it first. You definitely wore it best.”

Gosling didn’t just compliment Jimin. He also followed a unique Ken rule to show his admiration for Jimin‘s fashion. He presented a prop from the movie, a black and white guitar labeled “Ken.” It also serves as an accessory to Ken’s iconic outfits.

“There’s an unspoken Ken code that if you bite another Ken’s style, you have to give them your most prized possession,” the 42-year-old actor explained. “I hope you’ll accept Ken’s guitar as my humble offering. Besides, Ken doesn’t really play anyway, so it’ll be much better in your hands.”

The outfit in question was a black Western-style shirt Jimin wore in the “Permission to Dance” MV. It had intricate embroidery and white tassels, and the South Korean superstar paired it with black jeans. Gosling’s Barbie movie character accessorized it with a pink bandana and a white cowboy hat. The video was captioned, “Had to give Jimin this [guitar emoji] for his KEN-RGY!”

Gosling didn’t identify the outfit in his message, but it appears to be from H Bar C Ranchwear. This New York-based brand, established in 1897, has provided clothing for numerous Western films. It has dressed stars like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Elvis Presley, and John Travolta.

Jimin loves Ryan Gosling’s work

Fans adored Gosling’s playful video. They speculated that Jimin would be delighted with the gift. After all, he’s a massive fan of The Notebook, a classic film starring Gosling. Jimin has mentioned that he has watched it at least seven times.

ZEROBASEONE Continues to Break Records Days After Debuting

In the competitive world of K-pop, the rookie group ZEROBASEONE has made an impressive debut. They won their first music show just nine days after their debut and clinched another win the next day. Their first mini album, YOUTH IN THE SHADE, set first-week sales records.

ZEROBASEONE‘s first win was on SBS’s The Show. Some group members expressed gratitude to their families and fans on air.

Canadian-Korean Seok Matthew shared his feelings about ZEROBASEONE’s first win in English.

ZEROBASEONE’s second win came on MBC M’s SHOW CHAMPION. This time, all nine members got to speak.

ZEROBASEONE is a Million-Seller

The group’s first mini album, YOUTH IN THE SHADE, solidified their place in the K-pop industry. According to Hanteo, a music sales tracker, the album sold a remarkable 1,822,028 copies in its first week. This made ZEROBASEONE the first K-pop group to become a million-seller with a debut album. It also put YOUTH IN THE SHADE in the all-time top five for the highest first-week sales of a K-pop group album.

The success of YOUTH IN THE SHADE extends beyond album sales. All six songs from the album, including the lead single “In Bloom,” entered Korean charts like MelOn, Genie, and Bugs right after its release. It also surpassed 3,350,000 streams on Spotify and ranked No. 2 for five consecutive days on LINE Music’s daily chart, showing the group’s international appeal.

Meanwhile, the official MV for “In Bloom” keeps racking up views. They also released a performance version of the MV. Check it out below.

Girls’ Generation’s “Gee” Tops Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Songs in K-pop History

American music publication Rolling Stone released its list titled “The 100 Greatest Song In The History of Korean Pop Music,” with Girls’ Generation’s “Geetaking the top spot. 

According to the article released on Thursday, July 20, the entries were “crafted by a panel of music journalists and critics, both based in Korea and the United States.”

 

The list featured songs of various genres, and even those released from the 1920s. 

Describing “Gee” as a “testament to the way love — and all of its indescribable ecstasies — can be translated through pop music,” Rolling Stone explained that it’s an “enduring hit” because of its “rapidly repeated syllables” and “dizzying, maximalist aesthetic.” 

Gee” served as the lead single of Girls’ Generation’s debut EP in 2009. Its music video saw the girls — in their iconic colored skinny jeans — harboring a crush on SHINee’s Minho. 

 

When it was released, “Gee” set the record for the longest-running number one song on Music Bank with nine consecutive wins before Psy broke it with “Gangnam Style” in 2012. 

Gee” was also the first K-pop group music video to reach 100 million views — a feat it achieved in 2013, or almost four years after its release. 

Trailing “Gee” are H.O.T’s “Candy” and IU’s “Good Day” in second and third place, respectively. 

Rolling Stone wrote that “Candy” has “set the bar for every K-pop boy band’s sugary-sweet summertime earworms to come,” while “Good Day” has “emphasized IU’s bright, bold, and candied sensibility.”

Kwon Eunbi Set For Electrifying Comeback with “The Flash”

K-pop star Kwon Eunbi is making a highly-anticipated return to the music scene with her first single album, “The Flash.” News of her comeback was met with excitement from fans, especially following her viral performance at the summer music festival Waterbomb Seoul.

Kwon Eunbi‘s agency Woollim Entertainment unveiled the comeback poster for “The Flash” on their official social media. Designed like a fashion magazine cover, the poster features Eunbi looking very sultry in smokey makeup. The release date “2023.08.02,” “6 PM,” and “Coming Soon” are displayed in the bottom right of the poster, further heightening the anticipation.

The Flash” will be Eunbi’s first drop after about ten months. Her third mini-album, “Lethality,” was released in October last year. She recently wowed the audience at Waterbomb Seoul. Videos of her performance at the South Korean summer music festival earned millions of YouTube views. Although she was drenched in water, she still showed off her dancing skills, live vocals, and stunning physique. Netizens dubbed her “Hot Summer Queen” and “Mermaid Princess” after that.

In addition to her comeback and viral performance, Eunbi also made a memorable appearance on the popular variety show Knowing Bros. Eunbi was joined by fellow soloist Jeon So Mi and the members of STAYC. ENHYPEN Teams Up with Pokémon for a Special Quiz

K-pop group ENHYPEN has joined forces with Pokémon for a special quiz as part of their YouTube series, EN-o’clock. This collaboration aims to promote the 2023 Pokémon World Championships by showcasing the band‘s love for the franchise.

The 62nd episode of EN-o’clock featured the members of ENHYPEN challenging themselves with a round of Pokémon trivia. The quiz included naming various Pokémon and completing other challenges related to the franchise. ZEROBASEONE’s Zhang Hao: A Successful Fan of GOT7’s Youngjae

Zhang Hao, center of the K-pop project group ZEROBASEONE, recently had a dream come true. As a huge fan of GOT7, he had the opportunity to meet Youngjae, a member of the group, on the Best Friend radio show.

Zhang Hao’s admiration for GOT7 is well-known. The Chinese performer and violinist auditioned for Mnet’s survival show, Boys Planet, with GOT7‘s “Lullaby.” He has been consistent in saying GOT7 is his role model and “Lullaby” is his favorite song of all time. That’s probably why he decided to start his survival show journey with it. He must’ve thought it would bring him good luck—and it did.

During the radio show, hosted by Youngjae, Zhang Hao could hardly contain his excitement when GOT7‘s signature song, “Hard Carry,” was played in the studio. Not only did he dance to it, but he also clapped when GOT7‘s audio introduction came on afterward. He even got to sing “Lullaby” for Youngjae, showcasing his talent and fandom.

The best moment of the radio show came when Youngjae presented Zhang Hao with an autographed album. Youngjae had previously promised to gift Zhang Hao an album, and he kept his word. Zhang Hao‘s reaction was priceless. He was visibly excited, fanning his face and struggling to contain his joy.

Jungkook of BTS Mesmerizes with Live Performance on “Live Lounge”

Jungkook, a member of the global K-pop sensation BTS, recently graced the UK’s BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge with a captivating live performance. He was introduced as a “global pop star” and performed his debut solo single, “Seven.” Jungkook also covered Oasis’s “Let There Be Love,” leaving listeners in awe of his vocal prowess.

The song won first place on Mnet’s M Countdown and held the top spot on Spotify’s Daily Top Song Global chart for six consecutive days, racking up over 11.84 million streams daily. Remarkably, it surpassed 100 million streams within six days of its release.

In addition to his solo work, Jungkook also talked about BTS‘s current activities and future plans. He said that through their solo activities, each member is expressing their individuality and colors, continuously growing. “Based on this, when we come together as a complete group, BTS‘s appearance will be amazing, and there will be incredible synergy. I hope to see it happen soon,” he said.

Jungkook’s words come when BTS isn’t doing any group projects. Jin and j-hope are still serving in the military, and the remaining members will soon follow suit.

Despite the temporary hiatus of BTS as a group, the members continue shining individually, with Jungkook‘s performance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge being a testament to their success. BLACKPINK and Starbucks Brew Up a Storm with New Collaboration

BLACKPINK, the world-renowned K-pop group, will team up with Starbucks one more time to launch limited-edition merchandise and a themed drink. The collection will be available starting July 25 and sparked excitement and controversy among fans.

The YG Entertainment girl group‘s “bright and bold style” inspires the collection, which includes a range of drinkware and lifestyle merchandise. The highlight of the collection is the BLACKPINK Strawberry Choco Cream Frappuccino, a blend of strawberry syrup and dark chocolate sauce with oat milk and chocolate curls, topped with light pink whipped cream and heart-shaped chocolate.

Aside from the themed drink, the collection has 11 types of drinkware and six lifestyle accessories. They all showcase BLACKPINK‘s signature pink and black palette. The limited-edition merchandise includes reusable cups, mugs, tumblers, tote bags, yoga mats, passport holders, and key chains.

The collection features a pink rhinestone tumbler, labeled Lisa’s Pick, which has a price of 95,000 KRW (approximately 74.30 USD), making it the most expensive item in the collection. The price of this tumbler has sparked discussions on online forums, with some fans questioning whether the price was a typo.

Despite the controversy surrounding the rhinestone tumbler, many expressed excitement about the collection. BLACKPINK fans can find the merchandise in select Starbucks stores. These stores are in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Starbucks has a history of collaborating with K-pop stars like BTS and BLACKPINK to maximize its reach. The first collaboration between Starbucks and BLACKPINK in 2021 was exclusively launched in Thailand and sold out within minutes.

Emmy Kan, Starbucks Asia Pacific’s senior vice president and president, spoke with the media about the collaboration. “BLACKPINK is synonymous with an authenticity that’s bold and confident, making them an inspiring force that transcends geographies and cultures,” she said. She further promised an “unforgettable Starbucks Experience” to customers.
