SEVENTEEN Announces ‘Follow Again’ Encore Concert

Headliners indeed! K-pop boy group SEVENTEEN is ready to achieve another milestone as they conquer bigger stadiums.

On January 29, PLEDIS Entertainment announced that the God of Musichitmakers are once again bringing their stellar performances in the upcoming FOLLOW AGAIN encore tour. Just several days after wrapping up FOLLOW’s Asia leg, the agency revealed that the group will be returning to South Korea and Japan in 2024.

In a 30-second video, PLEDIS Entertainment unveiled that the encore tour will kick off in Incheon Asiad Main Stadium on March 30 to 31. With this,  SEVENTEEN will set a new record under their name as they become the first K-Pop group to hold a solo performance at the said venue.

After that, the 13-piece act will be holding TWO-day concerts in both Osaka Yanmar Stadium Nagai and Kanagawa Nissan Stadium in May. Following this, SEVENTEEN is set to become one out of the only three K-pop acts to perform in Nissan, which is known as the largest stadium in Japan.

As of writing, duo TVXQ is the first and only K-pop act to ever hold a concert in Nissan Stadium in 2018. In December 2023, girl group TWICE announced that they will be performing at the said venue for their Ready to Be in Japan Special concert in July.

With this, SEVENTEEN becomes the third K-pop act to conquer Nissan Stadium which has a massive capacity of about 70,000.

Fans’ reaction on SEVENTEEN ‘Follow Again’ encore tour

While most fans are celebrating the good news of the additional shows, several fans have also expressed their mixed emotions about the encore dates.

On social media, SEVENTEEN’s fandom, CARATs, have sent their congratulatory messages to the boy group for achieving another huge milestone. However, what makes CARATs bittersweet is the scheduled dates for the said tour.

https://twitter.com/ksywonu/status/1751622671048307000

To note, the Nissan Stadium date for the encore stage falls exactly on the group’s debut anniversary, which will be on May 26. Remarkably, it will be a historic moment for both SEVENTEEN and CARATs as it will be the finale concert for the FOLLOW era and the group’s ninth anniversary celebration.

Although undeniably proud of the group’s achievement, some Korean CARATs can’t help but feel bittersweet with the schedule. On the platforms Weverse and X,  several Korean fans stated that they feel disappointed with how the “Super” singers will be celebrating their anniversary far from their home country.

In addition, fans have also pointed out that South Korea had only two concert dates for FOLLOW to Seoul last year, while Japan had a total of 12 concerts for their FOLLOW to Japan dome tour which was set across 5 cities. Some also said that SEVENTEEN were already in Japan on their eight anniversary last year for their Love fan meeting

As of writing, PLEDIS Entertainment is yet to respond to the fans’ clamor.

Universal Music Group Removes K-Pop Artists’ Music From TikTok

On January 31, 2024, Universal Music Group (UMG) removed the music of popular K-pop groups such as BLACKPINK, BTS, ENHYPEN, Stray Kids, and others from TikTok. This decision came after UMG and TikTok failed to reach a new licensing agreement. It affects not only K-pop artists but also Western pop stars like Drake, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Taylor Swift

The removal led to a wave of disappointment and concern among K-pop fans on social media, lamenting the loss of a substantial portion of TikTok’s music library.

UMG addressed TikTok and brought up their concerns over royalties in an open letter published a day before the removal. UMG accused TikTok of attempting to underpay artists and songwriters, offering a fraction of what UMG deems fair. The letter emphasized the need for fair compensation for artists and songwriters, protection against the harmful effects of AI on human artists, and ensuring online safety for TikTok users.

Why Universal Music Group is pulling songs from TikTok

TikTok responded to UMG

TikTok responded by criticizing UMG for prioritizing money over the welfare of its artists and songwriters. A ByteDance representative said UMG is spreading a “false narrative.” TikTok defended its platform as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for talent, highlighting its successful agreements with other labels and publishers that prioritize artists. Speaking of artists, this dispute has affected them by limiting their exposure and ability to engage with fans on a platform known for its viral potential.

For fans, this move has led to a diminished experience on TikTok, because they no longer have access to a wide range of music for content creation or enjoyment. Fans who use TikTok to discover new music and connect with artists might find the platform less appealing. This could lead to a shift in where and how they listen to music.

Will UMG and TikTok ever fix things? Your guess is as good as ours, but we hope they will. It’s a huge loss for artists under the label to be unable to promote their songs on TikTok. – K-Pop News Writer

NCT’s Doyoung Donates to Charity on His Birthday

On February 1, NCT’s Doyoung marked his birthday in a profoundly impactful way by donating 30 million KRW to the Gongjang Donation platform. His generous contribution will help support low-income female teenagers by providing them with school supplies, feminine products, and other necessities. His donation reflects how grateful he is for the love and support he receives from NCTzens. He calls his contribution “modest,” but hopes it’ll make a difference nonetheless.

What Doyoung did isn’t just a mere donation. It’s a powerful statement on societal support and positive role modeling in K-pop. By focusing his contribution on low-income female teenagers, he addresses needs that are usually overlooked.
